Brent Hinds, the former lead guitarist and vocalist for the Grammy-winning heavy metal band Mastodon, died overnight in Atlanta, GA, after a traffic collision, according to Atlanta News First.
William Brent Hinds, 51, was riding a Harley Davidson motorcycle when the driver of a BMW SUV failed to yield while making a turn at the intersection of Memorial Drive and Boulevard, according to police.
The Fulton County medical examiner's office confirmed Hinds' death.
Hinds was best known for his career with Atlanta-based band Mastodon, which he cofounded in 2000, with drummer Brann Dailor, guitarist Bill Kelliher and bassist Troy Sanders.
In March, Mastodon announced that they "mutually decided to part ways" with Hinds, though Hinds later said he was ousted and expressed frustration with the split.
This past July, Mastodon was the first act to take the stage at the 'Back to the Beginning' celebration of Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne in Birmingham, England.
