Federal Judge Orders Changes At Alligator Alcatraz

(Ochopee, FL) --Those trying to shut down Alligator Alcatraz can claim victory. A federal judge ruled yesterday the state must halt all new construction at the immigrant detention facility in the Everglades. The state must also tear down the facility's infrastructure within 60 days. The ruling was made after the state was sued in June for violating environmental laws while building and maintaining the facility. The judge agreed the facility could cause water to run off into Miccosukee tribal lands during a storm. She also ruled the facility's lights would disrupt the Florida bonneted bat. The state has filed a notice to appeal.

DeSantis Touts "Deportation Depot"

(Arcadia, FL) --Governor Ron DeSantis says "Deportation Depot" has a lot of backing. The facility, located at the old Baker Correctional Institution west of Jacksonville, is Florida's second migrant detention center. It's been converted to accommodate about 13-hundred detainees. However, up to two-thousand people can be housed there. DeSantis says Deportation Depot has a lot of support from leaders in the area.

State Paints Memorial Crosswalk In Orlando

(Orlando, FL) --Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer is not happy after the state painted over the Pulse Memorial rainbow crosswalk. He turned to social media to announce the brazen act. Apparently, state crews got rid of the memorial crosswalk on Orange Avenue overnight. He calls it a "callous" decision and a "cruel political" more. The Florida Department of Transportation is banning art on travel lanes, paved shoulders, intersections, crosswalks, and sidewalks. FDOT says it's an effort to make roads safer for drivers and pedestrians. FDOT yesterday ordered the city of Miami Beach to erase a rainbow-colored crosswalk at Ocean Ave and 12th Street. If the city doesn't comply by September 4th, FDOT will remove it and send the city the bill.

Homes Evacuated During Brevard County Brush Fire

(Micco, FL) -- A brush fire is responsible for forcing some Brevard County residents from their homes. The fire started yesterday near Micco in the area of US One and Cherish Drive. Brevard County Fire Rescue says at least eight homes were briefly evacuated. No structure damage or injuries were reported, though. Investigators believe lightning may have started the fire.
