Multiple people were killed and injured when a chartered bus overturned on Interstate 90 in Pembroke, New York on Friday (August 22). According to the Genesee County Fire Wire, officials requested at least six mercy flight helicopters and multiple ambulances to transport patients to the hospital. Some victims were ejected from, the bus, while others were trapped underneath the wreckage of the bus.

"For unknown reasons, the vehicle lost control, went into the median, overcorrected and ended up in the ditch," New York State Trooper James O’Callaghan told reporters.

"Obviously, this bus was going full speed," he added. "It did not hit any other vehicle. It basically lost control."

Authorities said there were 52 people, including the driver, which was heading to New York City. There were also children on the bus, however, no information was provided about their conditions.

The driver survived and is being interviewed by investigators.

Officials said that 24 people were transported to Erie County Medical Center with injuries that were not considered to be life-threatening.

Those were not injured in the crash were being transported to the Indian Falls Fire Station in East Pembroke.
