What Hot Weather Does to Your Mental Health

August 22, 2025

You know what they say about hot weather, it’s not the heat, it’s the humidity. Well, it’s not just a saying.

Scanning through articles on line, you will find all kinds of reports, surveys and research about how hot weather affects how we feel, not only physically, but also mentally.

Researchers say that the extreme hot weather can affect our mood and behavior. They say heat waves are linked to increased anxiety, depression and mental stress.

They say hot weather can also affect people’s personalities. While mildly warm temperatures are nice, soaring hot temperatures can cause people to become aggressive.

While San Diego is known for having America’s finest weather, we do sometimes get hot weather. But these temperatures we’ve been having are unusually high in the inland areas and even not from the coast.

And what makes the heat seem hotter is in fact the relative humidity and the National Weather Service readings confirm it…with much more moisture in the air than usual.

And while that’s not a bad thing when it comes to wildfire risks, it can make us feel at times like we’re living in Florida instead of California. And we don’t want that!
