What Most San Diegans Are Not Used To

August 26, 2025

How about this weather in San Diego this week?

It’s not often that one of the lead stories on the news is all about thunderstorms and lightning even if it is the monsoonal season for us.

Stories about lightning strikes are common of course back where many of us came from in the East and Midwest. But not here. At least hardly ever.

We certainly are not used to hearing so many emergency weather alerts one after another with Severe Thunderstorm and Flash Flood warnings.

But if you’ve ever been caught up on the Sunrise Highway on Mount Laguna and having had to pull over or run for cover into the Laguna Lodge, you know how hard those mountain downpours of rain can be when the weather conditions exist as they have this week, with some lightning, some blustery winds and even hail for brief periods of time.

The meteorologists you’ve been hearing from here on the radio confirm that this weather is something many San Diegans are talking about, even if you are a former Midwesterner or Easterner who can remember what it was like where thunderstorms are commonplace.

And also why you’re glad you moved here, and didn’t stay back there, even if you’re one of those who still likes a very occasional episode of it.
