Authorities have identified Robin Westman, a 23-year-old from suburban Minneapolis, as the shooter in a horrific attack at Annunciation Catholic School on Wednesday (August 27). The attack occurred during morning Mass, resulting in the deaths of two children, aged eight and ten, and injuries to 17 others, including 14 children. Two of the injured remain in critical condition.
Westman was armed with a rifle, shotgun, and pistol, and shot through the church windows before dying from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara described the incident as a "deliberate act of violence against children and worshippers."
In an emotional news conference, Mayor Jacob Frey emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, "Don't say this is about thoughts and prayers—these kids were literally praying."
According to The Daily Mail, the suspected attacker's mother, Mary Grace Westman, previously worked at the school as an administrative assistant, according to a school newsletter from 2016. She retired in August 2021.
The BBC reviewed videos reportedly posted by Westman, which showed firearms and contained racist, antisemitic messages, and a threat against President Donald Trump. The videos have since been removed. Hand-written notes found with the videos mentioned depression and an intention to "fulfill a final act."
Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar shared that the daughter of a former staff member witnessed the attack. "The kids were packed into the church, and the next thing you know, shots are coming in through their windows," Klobuchar said.
President Trump has ordered US flags at the White House and all public buildings to be flown at half-staff as a mark of respect for the victims.
