NO SUCH THING, hosted by best friends and journalists Manny Fidel, Noah Friedman and Devan Joseph, gets down to the bottom of the trio's "dumb arguments" when they conduct real-world research and then debrief with the group to "see if they can change minds, enlighten each other and move past their emotional truths," according to the podcast description.
On Wednesday's (August 27) episode, the group addressed arguments sent in by listeners, including the age-old question: what is the "right" way to load a dishwasher. The answer may surprise you.
When a listener wrote in describing how they and their husband would often argue over the way each of them loaded the dishwasher, noting that the issue came up while they were in couples therapy. One host even admitted that the "biggest contention" he's faced with his own fiancée is whether utensils should be facing up or down.
The controversial task is seemingly such a hot topic that the debates often arise for other couples seeking counseling as well, so Manny, Noah and Devan set out to determine, once and for all, the proper way it should be done.
English journalist, tech writer and "dishwasher expert" Andrew Laughlin shared an article detailing the process of how to give your dishwasher "the best chance of getting everything clean": scraping off leftover food before placing dishes in the rack, no need to rinse; the dirty sides should face the center of the dishwasher; leave space between dishes and don't overload the machine; cups and glasses on the top rack; and have a mix of utensils facing upright as well as downward to avoid "nesting," or like "spoons that are spooning."
Instructions from a dishwasher manufacturer aligns closely with what Laughlin described, though as the trio revealed, engineers and other tech experts disagree with the sentiment, so "it still ends up being a matter of preference."
