Why Labor Day is Important to Remember

Have you ever wondered why we have a holiday called Labor Day and how it started?

According to history accounts, Labor Day is celebrated to honor the contributions and achievements of American workers and to recognize the labor movement that fought for fair treatment, reasonable working hours, and safe working conditions. 

It was established as a federal holiday way back in 1894 when labor laws were almost non-existent.

And that’s why it all started….from the 19th-century labor struggles, including strikes and protests for better conditions that led to new federal laws regarding unions and safer and better treatment of workers.

Back then, in the late 1800’s and even into the early 1900’s lots of workers in the U.S, many of them immigrants from Europe and elsewhere, faced harsh conditions, long hours, little pay and often worked in unsafe places.

That chapter in American history is fortunately well behind us now, as are other dark chapters in the past including the Civil War, slavery, communist which hunts and others.

But it is important that we don’t forget these times in our nation’s history so that they never happen again.
