Did you catch any “Easter eggs” hidden by Megan Moroney?

Moroney and her “6 Months Later” co-director, CeCe Dawson, shared new behind-the-scenes details about the music video on Tuesday (September 2). The reigning Country Music Association New Artist of the Year “ is always several steps ahead,” Dawson said of Moroney. She teased, “there are plenty of Easter eggs that were planted. Some are nods to past albums, others hint at what’s coming next.”

Moroney wrote “6 Months Later” with Ben WilliamsDavid “Messy” Mescon and Rob Hatch. She tells the story of a “dramatic” breakup with an ex, only for him to call her again six months after the split. Moroney said in a newly-premiered footnotes video that “we wrote this pretty fast and immediately knew I wanted it out this summer.” The highly-anticipated song released in June, followed by the music video in July.

“It all stared with the idea of a ‘hotline’ you could call yo get karma on your ex. From there, it turned into this surreal call center where operators press buttons to unleash a series of petty inconveniences on him until, of course, he comes crawling back six months later,” Dawson said. “The Karma Now! Hotline was super fun to film. It felt like a Y2K fever dream — glittered headsets, pink file folders, teal keyboards and all. And of course all of the unfortunate scenes with our lead guy. He was such a good sport!”

Dawson added that some of the inspiration stemmed from “iconic early 2000s movies that shaped us,” including Legally Blonde, Mean Girls and High School Musical’s Sharpay Evans (“anything girly, fabulous, and over the top”).

“It was really funny to see the scenes in our head come to life. Something surprising was how hard it was to ride the bike and sing in the workout scene. By the fifth take I was dying,” Moroney said. “The most challenging part of the shoot was trying to get Henry — my best friend Natalie’s dog — to behave on set! I wanted him to be on the bed with me in the opening scene but there was way too much going on around us for that to happen. …Some of the girls in the call center were actresses and dancers, but four of the girls were my real-life best friends: Natalie, Kelly, Becca and Kenedy!”

“6 Months Later” marked Moroney’s latest single since “You Had To Be There,” a collaboration with Kenny Chesney that she wrote as a Christmas gift to him. Watch the music video below.
