Demi Moore has a lot of "compassion" her ex-husband Bruce Willis' current wife Emma Heming Willis amid his dementia battle.
Emma appeared as a guest on the Tuesday (September 2) episode of The Oprah Podcast where she spoke shared more about her experience navigating her husband's frontotemporal dementia (FTD) diagnosis, which she expands on further in her upcoming book The Unexpected Journey: Finding Strength, Hope, and Yourself on the Caregiving Path, per People. His family revealed in 2022 that he had been diagnosed with aphasia, a language disorder that affects one's ability to communicate, and shared his FTD diagnosis the following year.
During their chat, host Oprah Winfrey shared a clip of an interview with Moore where she praised Emma being for being a role model of a caregiver to her husband. Emma and Bruce married in 2009 and have welcomed two daughters together, Mabel, 13, and Evelyn, 11.
"I have so much compassion for Emma in this, being a young woman. There's no way that anybody could have anticipated where this was going to go," she said. "And I really think she's done a masterful job. She has been so dedicated to forging the right path. She's had equal amounts of fear and strength and courage in navigating this. I think that this book is gonna really be very helpful for a lot of people who are walking through this."
The Substance star, who was married to Willis for nearly two decades before splitting in 1998 and shares three daughters with the Die Hard actor, also explained how Emma's vulnerability and openness about navigating her caregiving role serves as an inspiration for others in a similar position.
"Obviously, being the ex wife, even though our family is very connected, is an interesting position," she said. "So much fell on Emma to really figure this whole thing out, and the most beautiful thing, and she talks about this in the book, was recognizing the importance for caregivers that they have to take care of themselves. And if they don't put that time into making sure that they're okay, that they then can't show up for anyone else."
Emma recently opened up about "one of the hardest decisions" she has had to make amid her husband's health struggles and detailed the unexpected "hard" moments she has witnessed since his diagnosis.
