Gloria Gaynor Faces Backlash For Donating Thousands To MAGA Republicans

Disco icon Gloria Gaynor is under fire after her recent donations to Republican politicians and conservative groups were uncovered, per The Independent.

According to Federal Election Commission (FEC) records, Gaynor, best known for her 1978 hit "I Will Survive," donated nearly $22,000 to prominent Republicans, including House Speaker Mike Johnson, Sen. Ted Cruz, Sen. Marsha Blackburn, and Sen. Josh Hawkley, between August 2023 and June 2025.

Gaynor also contributed to right-wing organizations like the National Republican Senatorial Committee and the New Journey PAC, a Black conservative political action group. Most of the donations were made through WinRed, the GOP’s official fundraising platform.

The only other political contribution associated with the singer occurred in 2016, when she donated to Ben Carson’s presidential campaign before he dropped out.

While she didn't donate directly to Donald Trump, Gaynor's contribution to his political allies has raised questions about her selection as a 2025 Kennedy Center Honoree. Trump, who has overhauled the Kennedy Center’s board, made his influence known over this year's honoree selection.

“I was 98% involved,” Trump said during the honoree announcement on August 13, adding, “I turned down plenty [of nominees] who were too woke. This [group] is very different than it used to be. These are great people.”

This year's Kennedy Center honorees include Gaynor, George Strait, Michael Crawford, KISS, and Sylvester Stallone.

Gaynor’s fans, including the LGBTQ+ community, which has long embraced her music, criticized the singer's apparent support of MAGA Republicans and urged her to decline the Kennedy Center honor.
