A new study published in PLOS One reveals that using smartphones while on the toilet significantly raises the risk of developing hemorrhoids. Conducted by researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital, the study surveyed 125 adults undergoing colonoscopy screenings about their bathroom habits, including smartphone use.

According to CNN, 66% of participants reported using their phones in the bathroom, with 37% spending over five minutes on the toilet compared to just 7% of non-users. The study found that those who used smartphones on the toilet had a 46% higher risk of hemorrhoids. Dr. Trisha Pasricha, the study's senior author, explained that prolonged sitting on an open toilet seat can increase pressure on the rectal area, leading to hemorrhoids.

The Washington Post highlighted that the study attributes the increased risk not to straining but to the extended time spent sitting. Dr. Hima Ghanta, a colorectal surgeon, noted that poor posture while using phones can exacerbate the issue.

Despite the study's small sample size, the findings suggest leaving phones outside the bathroom to minimize time spent on the toilet. Dr. Pasricha recommended setting a timer or checking in after a few minutes to avoid unnecessary sitting.

Researchers plan to further investigate the relationship between smartphone use and hemorrhoids, aiming to develop strategies to reduce risks.
