Kelly Clarkson and Teddy Swims covered a throwback heartache ballad by Grammy-winning trio Lady A. The stunning rendition caught the country group’s attention when the clip was shared on social media on Wednesday (September 3).

“Two of our favorite voices ❤️ This is amazing!” Lady A commented on the performance of “Need You Now.” Hillary Scott — part of the trio, alongside bandmates Charles Kelley and Dave Haywood — shared the clip on her Instagram story and wrote: “ARE. YOU. KIDDING. ME?!?!?!?”

Lady A released the single in 2009. “Need You Now” served as the title track of the trio’s second studio record that released in 2010. The song remains one of the most iconic hits of Lady A’s career, along with “Downtown,” “American Honey,” “I Run To You,” “Just A Kiss,” “Champagne Night,” “What If I Never Get Over You,” “Bartender” and many more.

“Heartbreak never sounded so good,” NBC’s caption reads on Instagram. The performance took place on Songs & Stories, a new interview and music special that spotlights Clarkson’s conversations with influential artists. Swims has shared stories about his life and music on Songs & Stories in an episode that aired on Tuesday (September 2), along with Jonas Brothers (aired August 19), Gloria Estefan (aired August 26), and Lizzo (airing September 9).

The four-episode Songs & Stories special airs on NBC at 10 p.m. ET. Episodes are available to stream the following day on Peacock. Watch Clarkson and Swims cover the Lady A ballad here:
