A worker died after losing consciousness inside a gas storage tank at a Sacramento, California Costco on Monday (September 8). The incident occurred at the Costco on Expo Parkway, where firefighters responded to an emergency call around 10:45 a.m., according to the Sacramento Fire Department (SFD).

The worker, who was not a Costco employee but worked for Ponder Environmental Services, was cleaning the gas tank when he passed out. A coworker reported that the man slid down the last portion of the ladder and lost consciousness amid heavy fumes. Firefighters used a tripod and rope system to rescue him from the tank.

The Sacramento Fire Department spokesperson stated that it was unclear whether the worker passed out due to gas fumes or a medical emergency. Due to the hazardous environment inside the tank, firefighters had to use supplemental air to safely operate.

After being rescued, the worker was taken to the hospital, where he later died. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is investigating the incident to determine the circumstances leading to the worker's death. The Sacramento Fire Department confirmed that the fuel tank posed no threat to the public.
