Reds 2 Padres 1

It was a pitcher’s duel. It felt like a playoff game. It was a Reds comeback win.

Pinch-hitter Miguel Andujar flared an 8th inning single to score Elly De La Cruz and break a 1-1 tie.

Andrew Abbott worked eight stellar innings, his second longest outing of the season. A pretty ballsy performance when his team really, really needed it.

Tony Santillan worked around a leadoff double in the 9th to record the save.

The Reds (74-72) moved into a tie with the Giants, just two games back of the Mets. New York lost for the fifth straight time. The Giants lost to the Diamondbacks. 16 games remain. Buckle up.

It’s their first series win in San Diego since 2019.

Trailing 1-0 into the 8th, Elly tied the game with a two-out, two-strike RBI single. TJ Friedl’s headfirst slide just beat the throw from Fernando Tatis Jr. Elly stole 2nd, setting up his run on the Andujar end-of-the-bat bloop to left.

Abbott: 8 IN, 5 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 6 K, HR, 102 pitches. ERA 2.79.
Nick Pivetta: 7 IN, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 8 K, ERA now 2.73.

Tatis Jr’s 5th inning solo homer broke up the scoreless duel.
Padres left fielder Ramon Laureano robbed Ke’Bryan Hayes of a game-tying homer in the 7th.
