Jacob Ryan Gustafson’s cover of a Morgan Wallen ballad didn’t land him a spot on The Voice during the blind auditions that aired on Tuesday evening (September 23). However, Gustafson still walked off stage with a victory.
Gustafson, 35, a firefighter from Yucaipa, California, performed Wallen’s “Spin You Around” for coaches Reba McEntire, Snoop Dogg, Niall Horan and Michael Bublé. He thanked the coaches for the opportunity, and asked to bring his girlfriend, Jennifer, on stage with him. He explained, “she is the reason why I’m here.”
McEntire welcomed Jennifer to the show, and Horan admitted, “I was so close [to turning his chair]. If I could press it now, I would, but I’m so sorry, dude.” Snoop Dogg applauded Gustafson for his career as a firefighter, and pledged to keep up with any musical pursuits (noting that “I do have a record label”).
“This life is a beautiful life, and I’m so blessed,” Gustafson said. “And even right now, if I could change anything…”
Jennifer began to cry as Gustafson took a step back, pulled a ring out of his pocket, and said, “the only thing I’d change is your last name.”
The studio audience applauded as Gustafson popped the question, and Jennifer accepted. McEntire, Snoop Dogg, Horan and Bublé joined the newly-engaged couple on stage. Bublé exclaimed, “OK, so you won The Voice!”
“Jacob shows you that there are no losers on The Voice,” Bublé added. “What a beautiful moment. Yeah, nobody turned, but the person that he wanted most said ‘yes.’”
Watch Gustafson cover the song by Wallen — who was on The Voice in 2014 — and the surprise engagement below.
