9/30/25 Blog: Barb Kirkmeyer Stops By, And We've Lost Our Collective Minds
September 30, 2025
BARB KIRKMEYER JOINS TO TALK THE COMPETENCY BILL We've had some pretty high profile cases lately of people being released from jail after committing crimes because they were deemed not able to stand trial. They are still dangerous, but they are out in the community. Why? A bill passed in 2024 seems to be the reason. It was HB24-1034 and you can read it here. The bill passed in bipartisan manner and now it's created a mess. We'll chat with Senator Barb Kirkmeyer about it today at 1.
NO, THE COLORADO GOP DID NOT VOTE TO END PRIMARIES But the meeting on Saturday was a mess from all accounts from people who were there. Read about the meeting here. If you're concerned about where the state of Colorado is heading, you should be. And if you are a Republican you should know that there is a small group of hard right Republicans, who despite polling data clearly demonstrating how much Colorado hates Donald Trump, that the answer is to be EVEN TRUMPIER THAN TRUMP! They call other Republicans who care about winning "RINOS" while constantly shifting their position on what makes one a RINO and being utterly unable to define what a "good" Republican is (I asked them on my show and they could not do so). They sought to wreak havoc and force the party to adhere to a vote under the prior toxic regime that did not meet state statute to opt out of the primary and then they served Party Chair Brita Horn with yet another lawsuit demanding that a vote THAT DIDN'T MEET THE STATUATORY REQUIREMENTS be honored. This group of Republicans must be working for Democrats. For real. And if you're in the camp of "why should we let Independents vote in our primary" great, do you want a handful of party insiders to decide the candidates for you? The candidates who keep giving us unelectable candidates that don't manage to get enough votes in the primary to win, let alone win a general election?
WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON IN OUR COUNTRY? This weekend we had two different events where a veteran opened fire on groups of people who had done nothing to deserve it. First, we have a horrible situation in Michigan where a man we seem to know had beef with the Mormon church for some reason and rammed his truck into the church before opening fire on parishioners and setting the place on fire. But wait, there's more! Another veteran in North Carolina used his boat to cruise past a waterside restaurant and murder people there. The man in the Mormon attack seems by all accounts to be a Trump fan, though I'm not sure we would call this politically motivated as no one has a bad word to say about Mormons really. The second one in North Carolina hasn't had a political post mortem but seemed to be suffering from Post Traumatic Stress and had been involved in some truly wackadoodle lawsuits where he alleged white supremacist LGBTQ people were trying to kill him. It's like we've all gone insane. Nowhere feels safe. And as these two don't seem to be remotely connected why were they both in the same weekend? And why would a man with a four year old and a wife who seems to love him do this? I don't have answers for any of this but we're talking about it.
SOME CU FANS SHOW THEIR UGLY SIDE And though it seems to have been a small number of fans yelling curse words and "Mormons" at the players from BYU the University is addressing it by calling out the bad behavior. Is this part of the great breakdown that leads to stuff like the above? I'd love to say yes but this stuff does go on at football games by fans whose parents didn't teach them right. The only way this stops is when students tell other students that it isn't okay.
WHY AREN'T RED STATES FACING A BUDGET CRISIS LIKE WE ARE? I was kind of surprised to see this story on 9News but here we are. In it we see that several Democrat run states are having to call a special session to cover the losses from the Big Beautiful Bill. But not Republican states. Why is that? JK, I know the answer. This editorial shows how our Democratic leadership is passing the blame but they need to look in the mirror. Elections have consequences and they are hitting us in the budget now.
A COLUMN ABOUT HOPE FOR A BETTER US By Vince Bzdek at the Denver Gazette feels full of hope, but it might be the pollyanna kind that isn't really possible. But you should read it anyway. We must do better.
THESE ATTEMPTED ROBBERIES WERE PROBABLY FIGMENTS OF SOMEONE'S IMAGINATION Ooops no, they were men so the manly men on tv and the Governor's mansion will believe them. It seems that several high profile potential robberies in Cherry Creek were done by the same two dudes. Both are suspected of being Tren de Aragua members and one has been deported. Don't they know taking over apartment buildings is the way to go?
CHERRY CREEK PARK IS CLOSED AT NIGHT NOW Because disrespectful people have been trashing the place with parties and other gatherings at night, some of which have led to shootings and other mischief. A few bad apples ruin it for everyone.
DENVER PUBLIC SCHOOLS IS LOSING KIDS AGAIN After an enrollment bump from the kids of illegal immigrants Denver Public Schools has continued it's downward slide when it comes to the number of students in the district, losing 1,200 students this past year. This is really bad news, as Denver Public Schools is already closing schools and will likely have to close more if this continues. It's a combination of a lot of factors but the hollowing out of downtown and rising home prices elsewhere are a big part of it.
HEY LOOK, THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT MAY SHUT DOWN AGAIN And this is my "so what if it does" face. Again. Don't the politicians realize yet that this lurching from manufactured crisis to manufactured crisis has worn thin? Doesn't Mike Johnston feel any need to go through with his promise to return to regular budgeting order? No? Here we are again. Read what it's about here. This one will be the Democrat's fault if you're keeping score.
RTD WANTS TO THROW GOOD MONEY AFTER BAD I get it, those of you up north were told if you just paid into the tax scheme for light rail you too could be on a train with people smoking meth. But do you really want to spend $1.4 BILLION on another train line no one will ride? When will cooler heads prevail here? What I'd like to know is how RTD plans to make good on the promises that were made about ridership for the light rail? Remember when it was going to take all those cars off the roads? How did that work out? Not so good? Yeah, that's what I thought. It's time to put a pin in this and move on.
HEGSETH BRINGS BACK THE WARRIOR ETHOS And in what has been described as a blistering speech to military leadership, he put the on notice that the days of fat and out of shape troops is over. He also indicated that women in Combat Arms will be held to the same standard as their male counterparts and I'm fine with this. He's even bring back scary basic training. Look at this.
Hegseth: We're empowering drill sergeants to instill healthy fear in new recruits ensuring future war fighters are forged. Yes, they can shark attack and toss bunks, swear and yes they can put their hands on recruits pic.twitter.com/lZVbx0znWv

You can read about the whole thing here, but I don't hate any of it. The Department of War is about breaking things and killing people, full stop. I want the best of the best for that mission.
WHY IS EVERYTHING SO INTENTIONAL THESE DAYS? I love this article both for it's tone (kinda snarky) and it's message, that once again we've figured out a way to make someone just trying to get through life feel bad because they aren't doing it with enough "intention". I get that people want to get the ANSWER on how to do life, but how about you just do it instead and see what happens?
THE GENDER FLIP ON WORK AND WHY IT MATTERS This is a really good column that is essentially arguing for young, unemployed men to consider jobs in fast growing sectors of the economy that are currently dominated by women. Why? Because men are getting left behind and that isn't good for society.
THE NFL ANNOUNCES THE HALFTIME SHOW Bad Bunny, a Puerto Rican singer with worldwide popularity, is the halftime show for this year's Super Bowl. Sure, his music will be familiar to a bunch of people who may or may not watch football, but I'm not in the demo so I'll watch with curiosity.
THE Q ANON SHAMAN IS BACK IN THE NEWS And this one is a doozy and I'm only including it because it displays the same level of paranoia that the shooter in the North Carolina massacre did so maybe we should watch this guy. You remember Jacob Chansley from his appearance at the January 6th riot where he was wearing the horns with his face painted, right? Now he's suing President Donald Trump, Elon Musk and EREBODY for 40 TRILLION dollars while also stating he is the REAL President of the United States. It gets even crazier than that. Someone needs to check on Jacob.
COLORADO NEEDS TRUMP TO BACK TAIWAN And Jimmy Sengenberger writes about why here.
BEWARE A NEW ROMANCE SCAM And just beware anyone you meet online that you haven't met in person who has an investment, or needs money for something critical, or anything that separates you from your cash. Now we have a man who lost $1.4 MILLION in a crypto scam by a woman he thought he was romancing even though they had never met in person. STOP DOING THIS. People who prey on lonely people deserve nothing but pain and aggravation.
I FLAT OUT LOVE JK ROWLING First off because he wrote the entire Harry Potter series which was not only amazing but brought an entire generation to reading. But second off she isn't backing down from her belief that men don't belong in women's spaces. Recently star of the films based on the books Emma Watson has been in the news again, making comments about Rowling, after a long history of criticism of Rowling's positions. Rowling responded as a mother would respond to a child who has lost touch with reality. Read it here.
I'm seeing quite a bit of comment about this, so I want to make a couple of points.

I'm not owed eternal agreement from any actor who once played a character I created. The idea is as ludicrous as me checking with the boss I had when I was twenty-one for what opinions I should… https://t.co/c0pz19P7jc
WELP, THE ROCKIES SEASON WASN'T THE WORST IN HISTORY They missed that mark by one loss, but it was still horrible. You can read the stats here, but unless there are big changes in the off season I'm not sure there is any reason to be a Rockies fan going forward. It's just too painful to watch. All they need to do (and by "they" I mean the front office and ownership) is give us the impression through action that winning is important. That would help.

JUSTIN ADAMS BUSTS A CRIME WIDE OPEN This is great.
NORMALIZE BEING OBSESSED WITH YOUR SPOUSE And I agree to a certain point, but we've got to have healthy friendships outside that relationship as well. Not obsessive ones, just ones. Watch below or click here.
@communicationjon Forget the noise, a little bit of healthy obsession isn’t toxic when it’s mutual, intentional, and rooted in love. Careers fade, kids grow up, priorities shift. But if you're not all-in on the one person you vowed to do life with, what are you really building? Normalize giving a damn. Normalize showing up every day like they’re the most important thing. Because they are. #relationshiphelp #marriagetips #relationshipwisdom #communicationtips
