Orange County Sues To Overturn State Law Banning Development Restrictions
(Orlando, FL) --Orange County is doing legal battle with the state. The county and two dozen other municipalities sued the state yesterday. They're asking a circuit court to overturn a state law that bans local governments from passing laws that restrict growth. A lawyer representing the plaintiffs says local leaders are best positioned to make decisions about growth, safety and resilience.
Shooting Hoax At UF
(Gainesville, FL) --An investigation is underway after a report of gunshots at the University of Florida turned out to be a hoax. The school sent an alert around 9:30 last night that shots were fired on campus at Smathers Library. About half-an-hour later, though, the school said no shots were fired, and the incident was consistent with hoax calls.
Scott Proposes Bill Making Government Shutdowns Illegal
(Washington, DC) --Rick Scott is part of an effort he says will take government shutdowns off the table. Senator Scott announced yesterday he and fellow Republican Ron Johnson are proposing the Eliminate Shutdowns Act. Scott says it would stop Democrats from using the threat of a shutdown to demand a liberal wish list that undermines the president's agenda. He accuses Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer of making ridiculous demands and throwing a temper tantrum to try and stop President Trump from delivering for the American people.
Florida Man Facing Animal Cruelty Charges In Peacock Eating
(Hudson, FL) --A Florida man is accused of killing and eating his pet peacocks. Craig Vogt is facing animal cruelty charges. A neighbor called the Pasco County Sheriff's Office, claiming Vogt was so upset that she fed his peacocks that he killed and ate two of them just to spite her. Deputies say Vogt also threatened to kill more of his birds to make sure he didn't lose custody of them.
Impairment A Trend In Pedestrians Killed By Vehicles In Anchorage,
(Anchorage, AK) --The Anchorage area has seen eleven pedestrians deaths so far this year and most of those involved some sort of impairment on behalf of the driver or pedestrian. Police says around 40-percent of drivers and 85-percent of pedestrians killed were impaired. Since last year, the department has seen a jump in fatal pedestrian vehicle collisions. In 2024, 15 people were hit and killed by vehicles. In 2022, Alaska had the highest rate of DUI arrests per capita in the nation.
