In Flagstaff, Arizona, a 13-year-old girl crashed a stolen car while driving under the influence early Tuesday morning (September 30). An 11-year-old was in the passenger seat during the incident, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS). Both children were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The joyride began around 1 a.m. when the car, stolen from the Flagstaff Police Department, was reported missing. The young driver traveled the wrong way across the median on Interstate 40 before correcting her course and speeding off at over 100 mph. The car eventually hit a guardrail, rolled over multiple times, and crashed into a tree. The impact was so intense that the steering wheel snapped off and was found 50 feet away from the vehicle.
The DPS reported that the 13-year-old's blood alcohol concentration was 0.183, more than twice the legal limit for adults in Arizona, which is 0.08%. For drivers under 21, any blood alcohol content above 0.00% is illegal. The teenager will face DUI charges.
A DPS spokesperson expressed relief that the children were not more seriously injured, stating, "We’re thankful the kids are okay, but this could’ve ended way worse." The department emphasized the dangers of juvenile joyriding and underage drinking, urging parents to discuss these risks with their children.
