Why Worry When You Live in San Diego
October 2, 2025
When you live in San Diego, you don’t worry too much about the weather. You know that you live in an area with what is considered to have the finest weather on the U.S. mainland.
While people in many other parts of the country worry about hurricanes and tornadoes, thunderstorms and snow storms, deep freezes and blistering heat, San Diegans worry about how long it takes for the morning cloud cover to clear and that everyone has their sunscreen at the beach.
But anyone who has lived in San Diego for a while, knows that we do have to worry at times about droughts, and how dry it gets and how windy it can get and how all of that can increase the risk of wildfires and how they can happen almost any time of the year.
And that’s why the news this week from the National Weather Service that we have just come through the driest water year in seven years is news we need to know.
Water years begin every year on October 1st and with the official rainfall total for the last 12 months being only about half of what is average in that period, it’s a reminder to do those things we know we need to do to. Like clearing vegetation around our property and having a plan in case a wildfire happens nearby.
And in the meantime, we will hope for a wetter fall and winter.
