Read All About It: Books Are Back
October 9, 2025
Are books back? It was not that many years ago when we heard a lot of about Amazon Kindle and other digital apps for reading books. There were worries that real books would disappear.
But what happened in La Jolla this week is a sign that things could be changing. As the Union Tribune described it, “San Diego book lovers have their long-awaited sequel.”
It was the opening of a new Barnes & Noble in La Jolla. Just three years ago a Barnes @ Noble about a mile away was closed. Customers this week lined up to enter, moments before the doors opened.
Now as we head toward the start of 2026, it looks like book stores are not disappearing as many once thought.
In fact, the new store in La Jolla is part of a broader national expansion by Barnes and Noble with plans begun this year to open more than 60 new book stores around the country.
Digital readers aren’t going away but it looks like we won’t be turning the page on reading real books any time soon.
