Maybe not so "Complicated?" Avril Lavigne and her ex-husband, Sum 41's Deryck Whibley, reunited on stage for a memorable performance at the 2025 When We Were Young Festival on Sunday, October 19th.
The pop-rock icon joined forces with Whibley, surprising fans with their rendition of Sum 41's hit song "In Too Deep." This marked a significant moment for both artists, as Deryck had announced his retirement from music earlier in the year after completing Sum 41's farewell tour.
Despite their divorce in 2009, Lavigne and Whibley have maintained a friendly relationship, occasionally sharing the stage for special performances. According to Parade, Whibley humorously addressed the crowd, saying, "Well, well, well look at this s***, huh? I've come to crash your party!" The reunion was met with enthusiastic applause, highlighting the nostalgia and love for the early 2000s pop-punk era that both artists helped define.

Avril and Deryck’s story began when they were friends in their teens and began dating when Avril was 19. They married in July 2006 and were married for about three years before she filed for divorce in October 2009 (finalized in November 2010). Despite the end of their marriage, the split was amicable. Whibley got remarried in 2015 to model Ariana Cooper, and the two share two children together.
For Whibley, the performance was a brief return to the stage, despite his earlier retirement. Avril and Deryck's reunion symbolized a reconnection with their musical roots and a celebration of their shared legacy in the pop-punk genre.
