Two rising country artists took the stage with a duet version of Carrie Underwood’s scathing cheating anthem that she released on her debut studio record 20 years ago.
Team Snoop Dogg contestants Lauren Anderson and Makenzie Phipps performed “Before He Cheats” during the latest rounds of The Voice Battles on Monday evening (October 20). Snoop was on his feet by the end of the song, and his fellow coaches — Michael Bublé, Niall Horan and Reba McEntire — shared powerful reactions of their own.
“You gals are terrific singers, performers. You get into it. You commit,” McEntire said. “Carrie doesn’t record easy songs. She’s going to be so proud. Lauren, you came out of the gate ready. Makenzie, great performance, too. I’m very proud of you both.”
Snoop hailed Phipps a “superstar,” and said Anderson delivered “such a strong performance.” He told both artists, “I love the sisterhood. This is what I love more than anything, when y’all become a family.” After he selected one of the two artists to move forward to the Knockout rounds, McEntire said, “Lauren and Makenzie were incredible. Team Snoop is really doing well. Man, I wish I’d had a steal left, but one of them had to go home.”

Snoop opted Anderson won the Battle round. Phipps thanked her coach for the “incredible opportunity” on the show, and looked ahead to what’s next.
“Lauren and Makenzie, my two country girls, they really, really performed to the highest level,” Snoop said. “What I loved about Lauren’s performance is how she can go to another notch. I felt like Lauren had a little bit more experience to get her to the finals.”
