Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) says she's "strongly considering" running for U.S. Senate, per Axios.
During a recent radio appearance, Crockett announced that she was weighing a Senate bid in the wake of the Republican-backed redistricting push in Texas. The new maps, which are currently under legal challenge, would reduce Dallas' three Democratic House districts to two, threatening her current seat.
“If you want to take my seat of 766,000 away, I feel like there has to be some karma in that to where I take your seat that is for 30 million away,” Crockett said, referencing the statewide Senate seat.
A University of Houston/Texas Southern University survey released earlier this month showed Crockett leading the Democratic primary field with 31 percent support, ahead of State Rep. James Talarico and former Rep. Beto O’Rourke, who each polled at 25 percent, and former Rep. Colin Allred at 13 percent. O’Rourke hasn't officially announced a Senate run.
Texas has become a key battleground for Senate Democrats amid GOP turmoil. Incumbent Sen. John Cornyn faces a primary challenge from Attorney General Ken Paxton, whose controversies have made Democrats hopeful he could become vulnerable in the general election. Rep. Wesley Hunt has also entered the GOP primary, adding more uncertainty to the race.
