Former Deputy Found Guilty in Killing of Unarmed Woman Sonya Massey

October 30, 2025

Justice has been served in Springfield, Illinois. Former deputy Sean Grayson has been found guilty of second-degree murder in the 2024 killing of 36-year-old Sonya Massey. The verdict follows more than a year of emotional testimony and public outrage.

Back in July 2024, Massey called police after fearing someone was outside her home. When officers arrived, bodycam footage revealed a chilling series of events. Grayson testified that Massey appeared “erratic” when she said, “I rebuke you in the name of Jesus,” while holding a pot of water from her stove. Moments later, Grayson fatally shot her.

He claimed his Taser might not have worked because “she was wearing layers,” but the jury rejected that justification. Civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump, who represents Massey’s family, said, “While we believe Grayson’s actions deserved a first-degree conviction, today’s verdict is still a measure of justice for Sonya Massey.”

Grayson’s sentencing is scheduled for January 29. The community hopes this verdict sparks broader reform and accountability in law enforcement.
