HAPPY HALLOWEEN, EREBODY! It's the day when everybody tries to be something they're not, and if you've ever wondered about why we carve Jack-O-Lanterns you can check here. Why do kids go out tonight and threaten people who won't give them candy? Read that here.

WHEN WILL WE GET OUR FIRST SNOW? Don't get me wrong, I am LOVING this fall weather we've been having, but normally we've seen a flake or two by now. This says it could be at least the middle of November or even later, making this one of the latest snows we've seen in a while and perhaps historically.
IF YOU NEED FOOD THERE ARE LOTS OF PLACES TO GET IT As Colorado is injecting $10 million into the food bank system here to get those who are going to lose their SNAP benefits fed. Mayor Mike has a program for Denverites here, but I know there are lots of resources ginning up ready to help.
MARRERO MISSES THE MARK In the latest evaluation of the Denver Public Schools Superintendent Alex Marrero he fell short of the district's 75% mark for meeting the goals he set for himself. Of course Marrero whined about it. I just can't with these people anymore. Please vote the current board members out and get some new ideas on the DPS Board. Find suggestions right below.
HEY, ABOUT THOSE SCHOOL BOARD RACES
RE: JEFFCO SCHOOL BOARD RACE: Lots of you asking who I like in this race and Dougco, so here you go: This board needs to be flipped, please vote for Denine Echevarria (she's a left winger but hopefully reasonable), Samuel Myrant, and Gloria "Terri" Gascon for JeffCo Schools.
RE: DOUGCO SCHOOLS RACE: I would love to see Vail, Kramer, Gambill, and Smith elected.
RE: DENVER SCHOOL BOARD RACE: All of these candidates lean left on some things, but that's Denver. I'd support Alex Magaña, Mariana del Hierro, Caron Blanke, and Timiya Jackson.
RE: CHERRY CREEK SCHOOL DISTRICT This district desperately needs help and you should vote for Amanda Thayer and Tatyana Sturm.
THE SHUTDOWN WILL CONTINUE INTO NEXT WEEK Because the Senate has adjourned for the week. With SNAP benefits running out this week this puts a whole new layer of pressure on Senators of both parties to get this thing done.
WHAT ARE WE EVEN DOING IN VENEZUELA? We now have warships parked off the coast of Venezuela and it's being reported that Trump is considering air strikes on the bases that US intelligence are being used by drug cartels to move drugs to the US. This is escalating quickly and I'm not very happy about it at all. Congress, it all its glorious incompetence, needs to be looped in here.
THE CITY OF DENVER IS OUT OF LIABILITY SETTLEMENT MONEY Again, the City of Denver sucks at managing money. They have a liability fund that is specifically designed to pay the sorts of cases that arise when a city worker gets into an auto accident in a city vehicle. That's what happened to the people in this story. But after suing for a genuinely modest amount, their attorney was told the City was out of money to pay them. Why? Because they've been writing huge checks to protesters or something, no one seems to know. In this one story from Denver 7 the City told multiple people different things multiple times. The fact that representatives can't answer these questions quickly tells me that things are not being managed well. Do not give them more money.
TRUMP WANTS TO NUKE THE FILIBUSTER This is one of those short term solutions with long term repercussions when the Republicans are back in the minority, so many GOP Senators are not interested in this option. Trump wants it. So where did the filibuster come from anyway? I asked my assistant Chat to compile a historical timeline:
19th Century Senate Practice - Early Congress (1789–1806): The Senate originally had a “previous question” rule to end debate.
1806: Vice President Aaron Burr advised removing it, unintentionally allowing unlimited debate. - This change laid the foundation for the filibuster.
First Recorded Filibusters (Mid-1800s) The term “filibuster” (from Dutch for “pirate”) appeared in the 1850s. - Used to describe senators hijacking debate, often over slavery or statehood.
The Cloture Rule: 1917 - World War I-era filibuster angered President Woodrow Wilson. - Senate adopted Rule XXII: cloture required two-thirds vote to end debate.
Civil Rights Era (1940s–1960s) - Southern senators used filibusters to block civil rights laws. - Strom Thurmond’s 1957 speech lasted 24 hours, 18 minutes. - In 1964, the Senate invoked cloture to pass the Civil Rights Act after a 60-day filibuster.
Threshold Lowered: 1975 - Cloture requirement reduced from two-thirds (67) to three-fifths (60 votes). - Dual-tracking introduced: allowed other business during filibusters, enabling “silent” filibusters.
Recent Reforms - 2013: Democrats removed filibuster for most presidential nominations (“nuclear option”). -
2017: Republicans extended to Supreme Court nominations. - Legislative filibusters still require 60 votes to advance. Modern Debates - Supporters: protect minority rights, encourage deliberation. - Critics: cause gridlock, block majority will. - Reform or abolition proposals arise often, depending on party control.
The point of the filibuster is to protect the rights of the minority, and I'd be fine with it if we went back to the days when a true, physical filibuster was the only way to make it happen. I think this is a dangerous slippery slope, just ask those who hate the three justices Trump appointed to the Supreme Court.
THE TIME CHANGE KILLS ANIMALS TOO This weekend we "Fall Back" and get the hour that the government stole last Spring back and if you're a long time fan of the show you know I despise this time change with the fire of 1,000 suns. Now we know that in addition to more car accidents and heart attacks on the Monday following the time change, we get more animal deaths on the roadways. CDOT has the warning here.
47% OF AMERICANS ARE RIGHT ON THE TIME CHANGE They hate it and want it to stop. Read more here, but the real sticking point is whether or not we stick with Daylight Saving Time or Standard time.
HAVING A LONG HEALTHSPAN Dr. Peter Attia is a longevity expert and he focuses on the last decade of life, which for too many Americans are full of sickness and suffering. He did a great interview about how to make that decade count.
THESE HOUSES GO ALL OUT FOR HALLOWEEN And if you're looking for a fun neighborhood to visit, click here.
FIND A PENNY, PICK IT UP Then all day you'll have a penny because there is a shortage now because we've stopped making them. Read it here. Really, inflation has killed the penny.
THE SPRINGS SHOWS HOW FLOCK CAN WORK And there is an editorial from the Denver Gazette about how the license plate scanners can catch bad guys. Yes, there is the possibility of abuse, but right now they are another tool in the toolbox for law enforcement to put bad guys in jail.
FORT COLLINS IS GOING RANKED CHOICE VOTING If you're a voter in Fort Collins you will get the chance to use Ranked Choice Voting to pick your Mayor and City Council members. Some cities use it for Mayoral races, but this is the first time it's being deployed for City Council races. Read more here, but I can't wait to see how this turns out.
DEMOCRAT FACING CHARGES FOR DIRTY TRICKS A Maryland State Senator is now facing charges of extortion among other things after hiding cameras in the apartment of a political consultant to catch her in bed with a married man. State Senator Dalya Attar then threatened to release the video if the political consultant didn't "stay out" of her race for re election. This is like a Lifetime movie, y'all. Read all the sordid details here.
NEED TO EAT MORE VEGGIES? This has some easy ways to make veggies more appealing and the one about prepping stuff ahead of time is key. I prep my veggies when I bring them home from the store and it makes cooking so much easier.
CHINA USES OUR TACTICS AGAINST US And when you control the means of production for a ton of really important stuff, you get to set the rules. This article from the New York Times explains how China is doing just that, but doing it in a way that allows Trump to save face, which we all know is very important.
EXERCISE MAY CANCEL OUT JUNK FOOD TO A CERTAIN EXTENT. You can't eat junk food and go running and have a health life, at least for most of us. But as we know that ultra processed foods have been linked to higher rates of depression and that exercise has been shown to be a powerful antidote for depression or anxiety, it makes sense that a run after junk food can help elevate mood. Read the whole thing here.
THE ANDREW FORMERLY KNOWN AS PRINCE That was the headline in today's Sun from the UK about the stripping of Royal Titles from disgraced pedo prince Andrew. He's going to have to get a job now with no marketable skills.
WHAT CEASE FIRES ARE REALLY FOR Hezbollah, who Israel decimated with a series of targeted attacks on the leadership, is re arming, which is a violation of the ceasefire they accepted with Israel. This is the least surprising story of the day and I guarantee Hamas is doing the same thing right now. They will not stop until Iran gets a new regime. Period.
THE CORRUPTION OF SCIENCE This is a great story by David Strom at HotAir.com about how DEI has corrupted the sciences by forcing scientist to choose citations by race or gender other than quality. The good news is some scientists are fighting back. Read it here.
