An avalanche struck a camp on Mount Yalung Ri in Nepal on Monday (November 3), resulting in the deaths of five foreign climbers and two Nepali guides. According to Armed Police Force spokesperson Shailendra Thapa, the avalanche also injured five other individuals at the base camp, which is situated at an altitude of 16,070 feet.
The nationalities and identities of the deceased foreign climbers have not yet been confirmed. Efforts to rescue the injured are ongoing, with rescuers reaching the site on foot. A rescue helicopter attempted to reach the site but was forced to turn back due to adverse weather conditions. Thapa stated that another attempt would be made at dawn on Tuesday.
Mount Yalung Ri, an 18,370-foot peak, is often considered suitable for beginner climbers with no previous high-altitude experience. Nepal, known for its towering peaks including Mount Everest, attracts climbers from around the world, particularly during the spring and autumn seasons when weather conditions are typically more favorable.
However, recent weather in Nepal has been deteriorating, with snowstorms reported in the mountainous regions. The avalanche on Yalung Ri underscores the unpredictable and hazardous nature of mountain climbing in the Himalayas. As reported by CNN, rescue efforts are continuing, and the situation is developing.
