Maria Florinda Rios Perez, a 32-year-old house cleaner and mother of four, was fatally shot on Wednesday (November 5) near Indianapolis after she and her husband mistakenly arrived at the wrong address for a cleaning job. According to her brother, Rudy Rios, the couple, originally from Guatemala, had moved to Indianapolis just a year ago.
The tragic incident occurred in Whitestown, Indiana, when Rios Perez and her husband, Mauricio Velázquez, approached a home in the Heritage subdivision. Velázquez told IndyStar that he was searching for the correct key when he heard a gunshot. Rios Perez was shot in the head and died in her husband's arms on the porch of the home.
Police responded to a 911 call about a suspected home invasion, but later determined that the couple had arrived at the wrong address. The Whitestown Metropolitan Police Department confirmed that the facts did not support the theory of a home invasion. The investigation is ongoing, and the shooter has not been publicly identified.
Family members described Rios Perez as a kind and hardworking woman who was dedicated to her family. She leaves behind four children, ranging in age from one to 17. Her family is now working to repatriate her body to Guatemala.
The Boone County Coroner ruled her death a homicide, but noted that this classification does not necessarily imply criminal charges against the shooter. Captain John Yurkosh of the Whitestown Police stated that they are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Velázquez expressed his grief and called for justice, questioning why the shooter did not call the police before resorting to violence. The community has rallied around the family, offering support and prayers during this difficult time.
