A Chicago man has been arrested months after he allegedly returned his infant son to his child’s mother deceased in a stroller.
According to PEOPLE, 23-year-old Anthony Evans was taken into custody this week in connection with the April death of his two-month-old son, Kayson Flowers.
The investigation began on April 28, when Kayson was found “unresponsive” in a Chicago home and later pronounced dead at a hospital. A coroner determined that the toddler died from multiple injuries caused by child abuse.
Kayson’s mother, Kayla Flowers, had allowed Evans to spend a week with the baby, starting on April 19. Kayla said that Evans returned Kayson on April 28 in a car seat and said the infant was asleep.
“Me, not thinking anything of it, because it was raining, I just took my baby to the house,” she said. Minutes later, Kayla said she found Kayson “unresponsive—black and blue.”
Doctors later told the family the infant had been dead for six to eight hours.
“My son didn’t deserve that. He was only 2 months… He can’t fight back,” Kayla said. “This is heartbreaking for me seeing my child in that condition.”
Evans is facing one felony count of murder with a strong probability of death or injury.
