11/20/25 Blog: Let's Talk Turkey, And Vote To Make Fentanyl Possession Pay

WE ARE ONE WEEK AWAY FROM THE BEST HOLIDAY And by "best" I mean the one with the least stress or actual commitments. Don't get me wrong, I love Christmas and Easter, but Thanksgiving is all about food, family, gratitude and football. What's not to love??? I found this outstanding article with TONS of recipes from how to cook turkey a bunch of different ways to vegetarian dishes (for that one relative) and some of these look GOOD. WE CAN MAKE FENTANYL REALLY ILLEGAL AGAIN With a citizen's initiative designed to undo the damage done by criminal justice reform by the Legislature. Initiative 85 seeks to make possession of fentanyl at ANY amount a felony. Justice reform advocates, who care more about protecting criminals than putting them in jail, are apoplectic but from where I sit they don't have a leg to stand on, as the initiative contains a provision that allows people charged with a felony to complete drug treatment to avoid having a felony on their record. Advance Colorado, which is running the ballot initiative, says they have more than enough signatures to get this on the ballot. I can hardly wait to hear Democrats tell us this is too hard on the criminals who are flooding our streets with poison. Read the entire language of the initiative here. And for those of who still believe that court mandated treatment doesn't work as well as voluntary treatment, there is a growing body of evidence that shows when the treatment is of HIGH QUALITY and sufficient duration, it is extremely effective and participants are more likely to stick with treatment and are less likely to commit a crime in the future. This is one such study. It's time to force the issue.

SONJA JACQUEZ LEWIS FACES NEW CHARGES The former Democrat State Senator who resigned in a cloud of accusations of abuse from staff, has created more hot water for herself by trying to prove she was nice. Spoiler alert: she is not. From the Denver Post:

Sonya Jaquez Lewis, a Democrat who represented Longmont in the Colorado Senate, had already been charged with attempting to influence a public servant for allegedly misleading five of her then-legislative colleagues earlier this year. Last week, prosecutors from the Denver District Attorney’s Office added the new charges — for each letter she allegedly forged — ahead of a scheduled court appearance.

All four charges she now faces are felonies. The forgery charges each carry the potential for one to three years in prison. The influence charge carries a maximum of six years.

What letters are we talking about? Letters she forged that were allegedly written by former staff members attesting to her good character. I can't make this up. I hope she goes to jail, although she won't.

NOW WE'RE ALL IN THE TRADES For years we've been telling kids they MUST go to college and we've been so successful that the trades are desperate for good trained people. This article is all about the "green economy" and all the alleged jobs that are supposed to come with that. But the larger point is that the trades won't be the first replaced by AI. Just saying.

AN ECONOMIC WARNING SIGN: RICH FOLKS BUYING ART You may have missed the story about a Gustav Klimpt painting selling for a record this week. Now we see this story about a Frida Kahlo painting that is expected to fetch a record price as well. Why should you care? Because for the super rich, paintings are not just about the art, they are about parking cash in a "safe" place when the markets are uncertain. Ironically the mid-level art market usually dries up at the same time the high end art market takes off. Just an interesting thing to know.

MAYOR MIKE SAYS WOMEN'S SOCCER WILL BE IN DENVER And I have to say, announcing that that they were exploring options outside of Denver after the Denver City Council started asking hard questions was a brilliant move. Now Mayor Mike Johnston says the stadium will be built elsewhere "over his dead body" which has Jimmy Hoffa overtones for sure. Read more here about how the Mayor plans to pull this off.

WHOOPING COUGH IS MAKING A COMEBACK And a big part of this has to do with vaccine hesitancy made far worse by the debacle of the so-called Covid vaccine. The vaccine for pertussis has been around for over 100 years. It's not something to be scared of, and whooping cough can kill babies so let's make sure that if you aren't vaccinated and have a cough, stay away from any little ones. Or just get vaccinated, your choice.

THE BEARISTA RACKET CLAIMS A VICTIM Every year there is some object that is underproduced so it creates a feeding frenzy to get publicity. This year Starbucks got going early with their "Bearista" cups that sold out immediately. I actually commented about how people would act the fool to get their hands on one now. And here we have it. A woman who paid $200 for three cups (I know) says she sent the money and the seller never showed up. DO NOT SEND THE MONEY UNTIL THE ITEM IS IN YOUR HANDS. It's not complicated. At least she was kind enough to warn others about to overpay dramatically for a plastic cup just so they can say THEY got one.

ABOUT THE CITY INSPECTOR POURING BLEACH INTO FOOD Maybe you saw this video of a city health inspector pouring bleach into the food being sold by an unlicensed food vendor.

If this makes you mad, are you in favor of restaurants being able to sell food that is kept at temperatures that breed bacteria and sickness? Are you in favor of doing away with restaurant inspections completely? There is a reason we have inspectors. 9News did a story on it here, and I spoke with Nick, who is a wonderful listener and also a city worker, and he said the food inspector has had to work from home because of the death threats she is getting! That is ABSURD. Why should we allow someone who is perhaps here illegally to set up an operation that a citizen can't?

WHAT TO DO WITH YOUR STUFF WHEN YOU DIE I've talked about this before, but this story really hits home. Newsflash: most of your kids don't want your stuff. They have their own stuff. Those are YOUR memories, not theirs. They are going to throw most of it away when you die, why not make it easier for them by doing that before you die? I feel like this used to be sort of taken care of when older people downsize, but now we're not downsizing and neither is our stuff. Maybe make this the holiday where you have the "stuff" talk and find out what they are really thinking? And don't be hurt when they don't want your heirloom china, they are not rejecting YOU or your family lineage. They just don't want stuff they are never going to use.

CU DENVER LOVES HAMAS That is my takeaway from this story about a recent forum to discuss Gaza two years on. First off, they did not allow it to be recorded. WHAT? Then, they brought on a bunch of Hamas apologists who ignored the war crimes of October 7th to focus on Israel. GENE EDITING FIXES HIGH CHOLESTEROL And we are far, far away from having this be a regular treatment, but two dame scientists used CRISPR gene editing to essentially turn off the gene that causes high cholesterol and triglycerides in some people. Gene editing is going to be the way we heal a lot of chronic conditions in the future.

NO AUTOMATIC WATER FOR YOU! The longtime custom of greeting customers with a glass of water when they sit down is on the way out in Aurora. The City of Aurora, which has been pretty aggressive when it comes to water usage, is now asking restaurants to abandon the practice because it wastes so much water. They are right. I've long thought this was stupid from back when I was a server. Let them ask for a glass of water. No one will die waiting an extra few minutes for water.

GE APPLIANCES CONTINUES TO INVEST IN AMERICA Fun fact, when I worked at WHAS in Louisville, Kentucky our offices were an old GE HQ building, complete with an auditorium where they used to do product demonstrations for dealers who had come to town. There was still a big factory there, but it had been declining for years. It's back now, baby, and with a vengeance. GE is using more and more American made components in their products and just announced an even bigger investment.
