Austin Gilbert took the stage with a Jake Owen anthem that “gets the crowd hyped up.”
Gilbert, 25, a country singer from Eugene, Oregon, competed with fellow Team Reba McEntire artist Peyton Kyle in the Knockout rounds that aired on Monday (November 24). He opted to take the stage with Owen’s “Eight Second Ride,” which released as a single in 2009 and appeared on Owen’s 10-track studio album, Easy Does It.
“I love to work a crowd. It gets me going, and it gets the crowd hyped up (and) on their feet,” Gilbert said of his song selection on The Voice. He went on to reflect on what he admires about bull riding, hailing it an “adrenaline rush you couldn’t get anywhere else.”
Coaches Michael Bublé, Niall Horan and Snoop Dogg shared their reactions to Gilbert’s performance and Kyle’s (he covered Gavin DeGraw’s “I Don’t Want to Be”). Snoop said Gilbert’s song choice was “perfect.” McEntire told him, “Austin, you never disappoint. You sang tour butt off and you did a great job. I’m very, very proud of you.”
She admitted she felt “really torn,” making her decision between the two artists.
“I love to encourage,” McEntire said of The Voice in an interview with iHeartCountry earlier this year. “I can’t tell anybody, ‘Don’t do this. Go get a job. You’re not suited for this.’ But the way that we get to do the – I don’t say critique – advice, it’s helpful advice. It’s not tear-down. We want to lift up. We want to inspire. We want to encourage, not tear down. They get enough of that out there in the world.”

“I’m really torn,” McEntire said as she made her decision. “Austin, I’m terribly sorry but the winner of this knockout is Peyton.”
“Peyton’s got an amazing voice,” McEntire added of Kyle. “I think you could throw the phone book at him and he’d try to sing that and he’d do it very well.”
