IS THIS REVENGE AT DENVER PUBLIC SCHOOLS? Denver Public Schools just fired the director of two innovation schools in the district. Why? The public reason is that the district is now "reviewing" all the innovation schools in the district and bringing them all under the districts school management that already exists. This should be a warning sign to every school operating in the district with any measure of autonomy, as innovation schools do. But I think the real reason is much different. From the Denver Gazette:

In 2023, Superintendent Alex Marrero recommended revoking the innovation status of the Beacon Network Schools Innovation Zone after Magaña publicly supported a bill – now a law – that provided an appeal process. The board supported Marrero’s recommendation in a split vote, citing low test scores coming out of the pandemic, when officials shut down classrooms and pivoted to remote learning. Beacon appealed the decision under the new law.

The district faced a backlash for the move. The board later reviewed its decision, as required by the new law, with Marrero and Magaña reaching a compromise. Magaña would report to the superintendent’s office.

“The only thing that will be different now is that there won’t be a governing board,” Magaña said then.

Only now Magana is out, and this is after he ran for the school board and lost. I'm sure there is no connection there either.

DOUGCO WANTS TO KNOW ABOUT SHOPLIFTING And they are proposing a new ordinance that would fine businesses who don't report theft to police. It's an effort to force large corporations, who are far more likely to just eat the cost and pass it on to other consumers, to actually call the cops when someone steals something. Shoplifting convictions are up 30% in Douglas County under District Attorney George Brauchler and they want that to continue. As a resident, I'm fine with this.

DID POLIS ACTUALLY BREAK OUR SANCTUARY LAWS? A lawsuit says he did and a judge just refused to dismiss the case. The issue in question is Polis's office giving information about sponsors for unaccompanied minors who came across the southern border to ICE. ICE is checking in on the children to make sure they haven't been trafficked, which is something that has happened to way too many kids under the Biden Administration. In Polis's defense, there was a subpoena. We'll see how this plays out.

WHY DID POLIS BOOST A RACIST AND A DUDE PROMOTING BEASTIALITY? This one is stumper. The Polis X account sent out this post:

So who are those dudes? One promotes white supremacy and one promotes relationships with animals and pedophilia. I'm not kidding. Westword writes about them here, but this is a real head scratching misstep by a very politically savvy Governor. Someone posted this list of all the laws Polis has signed into law concerning children and put this close that post, it certainly does make Polis seem like he doesn't care about kids, or at least he seems to promote their sexualization.

Maybe he is a weirdo. Who knows.

SOCIAL MEDIA IS NUKING KIDS BRAINS And the studies on how social media and smartphone rewires young brains is not good. Not good at all. Read a report on the science that shows a connection between social media use and ADHD here. Australia just banned the use of social media for kids under 16, but don't wait until we pass a law here, be a better parent.

WHO WANTS A 4 BILLION DOLLAR TAX INCREASE? The Bell Policy Center, a left wing think tank, believe Coloradans do, as the are proposing a new progressive income tax scale that would do just that. They just got it approved by the Title Board, and I hope you will nicely laugh in the face of anyone asking you to sign this nonsense. Read more here.

IS SATURATED FAT BACK? The move to undemonize saturated fat is underway from HHS when it comes to dietary guidelines. Saturated fat from dairy and red meat has long been thought to raise cholesterol which can lead to adverse cardiac events. BUT, and this a big BUT, the studies underpinning that connection aren't very good. The New York Times writes here about what the science says and doesn't say, but when you consider that most data comes from studies when they didn't ask about TRANS FAT consumption, which HAS been proven to be bad for us, things get dodgy. It also depends greatly on what you substitute saturated fats WITH. The real culprit for heart disease is inflammation, so if you eat inflammatory foods (like those that include trans fats) you aren't going to fare so well.

TRUMP V THE EU IS SOMETHING One thing Europe doesn't want to hear about is the many missteps they are making when it comes to free speech and unfettered immigration from Muslim nations. Unfortunately, they want to put their heads in the sand when it comes to stats like these released in Germany recently:

So the Trump admin has been calling out the EU for allowing this to continue while also working hard to arrest people for free speech. The EU is not happy about this. I don't blame them, Trump has been pretty dismissive of them, but the article I linked doesn't talk to rank and file folks as much. I'll have a full report from Europe next October.

WHY ARE COLORADO PRISONS BEING INVESTIGATED? Though I don't think specific cause was given when the investigation was announced yesterday, the Denver Gazette has dug up some very unflattering things from the recent past that could have lead to this. Read it here.

THE KIDS RUIN EVERYTHING This story made me laugh. In-N-Out burger has removed the number 67 from it's ticket system after kids were filming themselves creating havoc when the number was called. Why? Because kids today.

AURORA HAS NABBED OVER 1200 CARS As part of its new Three Strikes rules that allows police to impound cars when drivers don't have insurance, a drivers license, and insurance. Good news though, a vast majority of the scofflaws get their cars back after producing the needed documents. The rest are sent to auction after a period of time.

AND THEY USED CAR CHASES TO NAB SOME OF THEM Aurora is under a Consent Decree since the horrible Elijah McClain killing, and now they are looking at the policy change under Chief Todd Chamberlain that allows car chases again. Two criminals just died running from police and I'm okay with them suffering the consequences of their own choices. The issue for me is that most people who run from police are already people who have committed crimes. Some very violent crimes. Do we let them go because we're afraid they might drive into a telephone pole? I realize the public is also at risk, but if we keep letting criminals get away we make society as a whole less safe. We've seen the results of that already in Colorado.

AURORA HAS MONEY FOR HOME DOWN PAYMENTS And these sorts of programs are great for people with stable income and some savings so they can pay for the ups and downs of home ownership. Read about it here, but it's limited and there is a finite amount of funds.

THE FRAUD IN OBAMACARE IS PRETTY STAGGERING According to a report from the Government Accountability Office anyway. From the Denver Gazette:

This month’s new GAO audit of the Obamacare program outlined how the agency obtained subsidized plans for 23 out of 24 fictitious applications using fake Social Security numbers, amounting to a more than 90% failure rate in existing fraud detection systems. Four of the fake accounts established for plan year 2024 were each paid $2,350 per month for subsidized Obamacare insurance, totaling roughly $113,000 for all four for the year. The GAO did not provide cost estimates for the 18 other fake accounts that were paid in 2025, because the year is not yet over. 

The watchdog agency’s audit also uncovered roughly $94 million in tax credits paid to deceased enrollees as well as nearly $27 billion in improper payments.

This is what happens when the government is just shoving money out the door. There is no incentive to go after fraud. Obamacare has been a massive failure. Some of the ideas being proposed begin to nibble around the edges, but not by much.
