Naveed Akram, the suspect accused in the mass shooting targeting Jewish victims at Bondi Beach in Australia, was charged after waking from a coma in a Sydney hospital, NBC News reports.
Akram, 24, was charged with 59 offenses, which include terrorism and 15 counts of murder in relation to the incident. The suspect and his father, Sajd Akram, who was killed in a shootout with police at the scene, are accused of carrying out an ISIS-inspired attack during a Hanukkah celebration.
Akram was also charged with 40 counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent to murder and one count each of committing a terrorist act, discharging firearms, placing explosives and publicly displaying a terrorist organization symbol in relation to the shooting, the New South Wales Police Force announced on its website.
“Police will allege in court the man engaged in conduct that caused death, serious injury and endangered life to advance a religious cause and cause fear in the community,” the department said.
Early indicators showed the shooting was likely a "terrorist attack inspired by ISIS," according to police. Akram was critically wounded during a shootout with police and the department was waiting for his condition to stabilize before formally charing him.
“It’s important he has appropriate cognitive ability. For his fairness, we need him to understand what is exactly happening,” NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon said.
