What Is All This Fog About in San Diego?

December 17, 2025

So what’s with all the fog the last several days? You might be wondering because it is rare to have this much and this thick fog for so long.

It’s not uncommon in some coastal areas in Northern California or some central valley areas of the state at times. If you’ve ever had to drive in that tule fog, you know how dangerous fog can be.

And while the fog that happens from time to time means planes at San Diego International taking off to the East over downtown it is still a weird feeling if you’re a passenger in one of those planes soaring over tall buildings right below.

And the fog has even dimmed the glow of all the holiday lights across downtown and in neighborhoods all over parts of San Diego.

According to a report from the National Weather Service in the San Diego Union Tribune, our fog lately is due to a big high-pressure system across the ocean, trapping cool water vapor at the surface, below much warmer air above. The trapped moisture turns into droplets that turn into fog.

Maybe it’s just Mother Nature’s way of reminding us that even having America’s finest weather year-round, a dose of the unusual is good for us now and then to make us appreciate what we have even more.
