Trisha Yearwood said the most important part about her 20th wedding anniversary with Garth Brooks is that the couple would be together.
Yearwood, who hailed her husband “the romantic” in the relationship, married Brooks in an intimate ceremony at their home in Oklahoma on December 10, 2005. She spoke about the pair’s milestone anniversary during a recently-shared interview clip from The Drew Barrymore Show. Yearwood told Ross Mathews and Valerie Bertinelli that she’d be on her “12 Days of Christmas Tour” on her 20th anniversary; however, the important thing is “we’re going to be together.”
“I’m actually working on our anniversary,” she said with a laugh. “I actually was not going to, and I have a Christmas album out and we’re touring. and I was going to block around it, and Garth said, ‘no, I think the best thing would be to…get to see you in your element, doing what you do for our anniversary.’ So, I don’t know what else we’ll do. …We’re going to be together. That’s our big thing, is just be, you know, we like to be where the other one is.
“My longest relationship before Garth was a dog I had that lived to be 14, and I was very proud of that relationship,” Yearwood said, laughing again. “So, we have surpassed that, which is a pretty big milestone for me. We were friends for a long time before we were a couple, and so, we knew everything about each other before we ever went on a date. …When you marry your best friend, it’s, I mean, you learn what’s important. And I was not really good at staying when things were tough. I was really good at bailing, and this is not an option because I’m with the love of my life. So, we just figure it out.”
Brooks made a surprise appearance during Yearwood’s show at Atlanta Symphony Hall on December 10 in Atlanta, Georgia. Brooks, 63, and Yearwood, 61, performed “Merry Christmas, Valentine,” from Yearwood’s new Christmas album. Brooks was “ready to pour his heart onto the stage,” per a post shared on his website, when “emotion carried him away.” Brooks said in a statement: “I thought I was ready, and I was so wrong. The second I tried to sing, nothing came out...just tears...really good tears.”
“The very best part of the last 20 years has been you. Merry Christmas, Valentine. I love you. Trisha,” Yearwood wrote in an anniversary tribute to her husband. Watch her Drew Barrymore Show interview here:
