House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries is calling for a congressional investigation into President Donald Trump’s health, arguing that the White House hasn't been transparent about the president’s condition, per Newsweek.

Jeffries made the comments during an interview with political commentator Aaron Parnas. Asked whether Congress should investigate Trump’s health, Jeffries said the issue should be addressed immediately and not delayed until after the November midterm elections.

“I don’t believe that this is something that should wait until the American people give Democrats the majority,” Jeffries said.

Jeffries said the administration is “definitively” not being forthcoming about Trump’s health and argued that lawmakers have a responsibility to ensure the president is able to carry out the duties of the office at the level Americans expect. The New York Democrat added that Rep. James Comer, the Kentucky Republican who chairs the House Oversight Committee, should act quickly as Congress is a “separate and coequal branch of government” that doesn't work for the president or his allies.

The comments come amid renewed attention on Trump’s age. At 79, Trump was the oldest person to assume the presidency upon his return to office. While Trump has repeatedly insisted he is in excellent health, a recent Wall Street Journal report described what it characterized as signs of aging, including delicate skin and difficulty hearing.

The White House has rejected concerns about the president’s health. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt previously said Trump is “the hardest-working president the American people have ever had” and is in good health. Trump also said White House doctors reported he is in “perfect health” and that he “aced” his cognitive exam.
