1/6/26 Blog: Roads That Charge EVs, A GOP Governor Debate, And More!

January 6, 2026

DOES ANYONE IN THIS AUDIENCE STILL CARE ABOUT JANUARY 6TH? And I mean really? If so, why? If you turn on MSNOWBC today they are wall to wall with it. But I genuinely don't care. It was horrible when it happened, I swore I would never vote for Trump again (I lied), but Biden was installed, ran the country horribly for four years (or the people in his office did anyway), and January 6th almost seems quaint against the blatant Constitutional violations we experienced during Covid, as well as the southern invasion we are still dealing with. But do you care now? I most certainly don't.

ROADS CAN CHARGE YOUR EV and I've got Thomas Frey on to talk about it. Roads that can charge an electric vehicle are not science fiction, they are being built right now in Florida. Thomas writes here about how many problems this will solve when it comes to our move to electric vehicles here. If we have time with Thomas at 1 we will also talk about how tech may be able to help us give a voice to things like cancer to make it easier to fight, read about that here.

WELD COUNTY SHERIFF STEVE REAMS IS THROWING A DEBATE And initially the intent was to bring all six main GOP candidates to Weld County this Saturday to debate. Victor Marx declined right away, saying he had a scheduling conflict and then just saying no when the offer was made to change the date. Now Greg Lopez has decided to run as an Independent, and Mark Baisley is out to run for Senate against Hick, so we've got the THREE leading candidates for the GOP nomination coming and you can come too. This is actually much better than having a bunch of people onstage if you ask me, and gives time for follow up questions from me and my co-moderator Ryan Schuiling to be able to dig deeper. Get your tickets by clicking here but don't wait, they are almost gone. Sheriff Reams joins me today at 2:30 to chat about it.

HOW IN THE WORLD DID MIKE JOHNSTON BLOW $2 MILLION ON LAWYERS? Mike Johnston appeared on Capitol Hill to answer questions about the sanctuary nature of Denver. To prepare, he hired a fancy DC, Democrat connected law firm for "prep". They generously agreed to work for JUST $1000 an hour for partners, and JUST $595 for associates and assistants. And somehow Mayor Johnston's five hour appearance has now cost TWO MILLION DOLLARS. Good grief. Nice work if you can get it. What did he think he needed to hide that he needed two million dollars worth of attorney's advice? I'd love to see the line item billing on this one.

GREG LOPEZ IS GOING IT ALONE After leaving the GOP to run as an Independent for Governor. I think this will likely go the same way his other campaigns have gone. Maybe I'm wrong, we'll see. Find out more about his campaign here.

DEMOCRATS SPENT YOUR TABOR REFUNDS So the Governor says we won't get one this year. You can read here about how he blames the Trump administration for our budget woes in Colorado, but this is entirely self inflicted. Just look at our budget growth since 2000:

Here are the hard numbers:

2000: ~$15.6B

2005: ~$19.0B

2010: ~$23.0B

2015: ~$27.5B

2020: ~$36.5B

2024–25: ~$43.9B

It grew roughly 12 billion dollars between 2000 and 2015. Since Democrats took over completely, it's increased 16.4 billion in the same time frame. And now the Governor wants MORE money. This is not a revenue problem, this is a spending problem. And the Democrats are the ones doing the spending.

REP GABE EVANS IS WORKING TO KEEP OUR LIGHTS ON And I LOVE this freaking genius bill he's running so much. From CompleteColorado.com:

Under H.R. 3628, titled “State Planning for Reliability and Affordability Act,” all states will be required to make sure their energy resource plans are sufficient and from reliable facilities, which is defined further as facilities capable of supplying electricity continuously for at least 30 days.
The bill, which must still pass the Senate, specifies that the 30 days includes days involving severe weather and ability to provide “essential grid services such as frequency and voltage support.” Colorado’s mandate for 100 percent renewable energy by 2040, however, is in conflict with that, as majority Democrats over the past few years have drastically decreased the state’s production of coal, as well as oil and gas production in favor of wind and sun energy, which can be a handicap during periods of bad weather.

That means that Colorado will have insure that all renewables are reliable for 30 days straight, which isn't likely, or admit that renewables are NOT reliable, which is accurate.

HOW MUCH WOULD YOU PAY FOR A BRONCOS PLAYOFF TICKET? If you're thinking of going to the Broncos playoff game you better get ready to pay up. Seats in the nosebleeds are over $500 and "good" seats are several thousand as of right now. What would you pay?

NEW CARS ARE SELLING TO FEWER PEOPLE As the average price of a new car is now over $50k car dealers are finding themselves dealing with a wealthier demographic when it comes to new cars. Check this out from TheHill.com:

Households earning more than $150,000 a year now buy 43 percent of the new cars sold in the U.S., up from 30 percent in 2019, according to Cox Automotive. Meanwhile, households earning less than $75,000 make up just 26 percent of sales, down from 37 percent.

That seems pretty significant. If China is ever allowed to sell cars here, (they won't be) they will have a whole lot of consumers to target with their cars, which average around $17k. I asked Chat how much government regulation add to the price of a car here, and it gave me a long answer with lots of data, but the main answer seems to be about 20-30% of the price is because of government edicts about gas mileage, safety standards, and emissions. I can argue that those things all lower overall costs, but it seems like consumers should be able to decide that for themselves.

INITIATIVE 108 GOES TO FAR According to Ari Armstrong in this column. He makes VERY good points about how this law could catch people who aren't necessarily child molesters quite easily because of the way this is written. I'm all in favor of those who rape children going to jail for life. Get them out of our communities forever. I'm in favor of putting those who traffick children in jail for a very, very long time. But we do need to make sure that we don't write laws so broadly that protections for young people in love get thrown out. This column gave me pause. I hope the Legislature would make these changes itself, so we don't need this ballot initiative.

BUT THE LEGISLATURE IS ALREADY PLANNING CHANGES And this is bipartisan so that is very good. I think this bill falls short in the prison sentences department, but it makes significant changes to help victims of trafficking be able to get their lives on track, and ends the idiotic notion of "child prostitution" as a crime committed by a child. Read it here. It's a start.

WILL JEFFCO SCHOOLS EVER BE ACCOUNTABLE? Jimmy Sengerberger writes here about the failure of Jefferson County Public Schools to adequately account for the way they have mishandled, over and over again, accusations of sexual misconduct, including the accusation that led their chief of schools to kill himself. If you're a JeffCo parent you really need to read this.

WHO IS ORGANIZING THE PRO MADURO PROTESTS? You're going to love this. This is what we're up against.

NINE REASONS TRUMP'S ARREST OF MADURO IS GOOD FOR THE US And I have to agree with these.

AI IS PREDICTING YOUR LONG TERM CARE NEEDS And this is a neat trick as it will be decades before most of us find out if it's right. That being said, if this makes people think about what happens if they can't live independently anymore, I'm all for it. Read more here.

MINNEAPOLIS AREA HOTEL FAFOS A hotel in the Hilton family has been booted by the Hotel chain after a story broke that they cancelled a bunch of reservations for ICE agents who were going to be working in the area. Read the whole story here, but good for Hilton for taking decisive action against a discriminatory owner. Now he can discriminate freely while trying to figure out how to get people to stay at his hotel.

COLLEGES ARE CODDLING GEN Z And they are setting themselves up for failure. Read this column for more.
