The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced that the 2026 tax filing season will begin on Monday, January 26. Taxpayers will have until Wednesday, April 15, to file their 2025 tax returns or request an extension. The IRS expects to receive about 164 million individual tax returns this year, with most filed electronically.
New tax law provisions from the One, Big, Beautiful Bill will take effect, potentially impacting federal taxes, credits, and deductions. Taxpayers can use the new Schedule 1-A form to claim deductions, including no tax on tips, overtime, and car loan interest.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to use online resources and direct deposit for refunds, as paper checks are being phased out. Taxpayers can also access their individual online accounts for information on balances, payments, and tax records.
Acting IRS Commissioner Scott Bessent emphasized the IRS's readiness to assist taxpayers during the filing season. "The IRS workforce remains vigilant and dedicated to their mission to serve the American taxpaying public," he said, according to IRS.gov.
For those without bank accounts, the IRS recommends opening one to receive refunds via direct deposit. Additionally, parents and guardians can open Trump Accounts, a new retirement savings vehicle for children under 18.
Taxpayers can begin using the IRS Free File program on January 9, and the Free File Fillable Forms tool will be available starting January 26. The IRS also offers resources to help taxpayers avoid scams and choose reputable tax preparers.
IRS CEO Frank Bisignano assured that the IRS is prepared to process returns efficiently, incorporating new tax laws into their systems. For more information, taxpayers can visit IRS.gov.
