Let's revisit: Does Nick Castellanos do anything for you?
January 22, 2026
Let's revisit from November.......
The Reds still need a bat. The Phillies still plan to move on from Nick Castellanos.
Phillies GM Dave Dombrowski confirmed again this week that the Phillies expect to make a change of scenery move with Castellanos before spring training opens. Castellanos is owed $20MM this season — the last of a five-year, $100MM contract.
The Athletic’s Matt Gelb reported early in the winter that the Phils were likely to either trade or release Castellanos. The latter has seemed likelier all along, if only because finding a taker for even part of Castellanos’ salary is a tall order.
USA Today's Bob Nightengale reported the Phillies would have to take on at least $17 million to move the remainder of his contract.
Would Castellanos do anything for you, if the Phillies covered most of his contract?
He turns 34 in March. His '25 season was a mess.
.250-.294-.400-.694, OPS+ 88, 17 HR, 72 RBI.
That on-base percentage was the lowest of his career.
He had the 2nd worst exit velocity of his career.
He had the lowest hard-hit rate of his career.
His negative -0.6 WAR (FanGraphs), ranked 145th among 145 qualified hitters.
His defense has forced him into a strictly DH role. He was -11 in Defensive Runs Saved. 2nd worst in MLB among RF last season.
He argued with manager Rob Thomson, and was benched for an “inappropriate comment” following the manager’s decision to lift him for defense late in a game. Per The Athletic, the dugout incident, numerous team sources said, left players and coaches alike disgusted. He started only 12 of the team’s 25 games in September.
If he hadn't played for the Reds, and flexed over Cardinals pitcher Jake Westbrook at home plate on Opening Day 2021, would this be a conversation?
I don't see any remaining value. Poor hitter. Poor fielder.
I'll pass.
