A 16-year-old girl died and another teen remains in critical condition following a sledding accident in Frisco, Texas, approximately 45 minutes outside of Dallas.
The incident occurred Sunday (January 25) at approximately 2:26 p.m. in the area of Majestic Gardens Drive and Killian Court, when Elizabeth Marie Angle and another 16-year-old girl were being pulled on a sled behind a Jeep Wrangler driven by a 16-year-old boy, according to local authorities.
Witnesses reported the sled struck a curb before colliding with a tree. When first responders arrived at the scene, they found both girls with life-threatening injuries and immediately began administering life-saving measures.
Both teens were rushed to local hospitals, where Angle died from her injuries. The second girl remains in critical condition.
Mark Fischer, a neighborhood resident who witnessed the incident, described what he saw before the crash. "I saw a Jeep turning off of one of the streets here when I was walking my dog," Fischer told WTVT. "And there were two girls sledding behind the vehicle, being pulled. And the Jeep got accelerated really quickly, and the girls started screaming."
"From what I saw, the acceleration, especially when it's ice like this... to be going that fast and, you know, a sled can't stop," Fischer said.
Another resident, Caroline Rubalcaba, expressed shock at the tragedy. "It's awful. I just— I can't really comprehend it yet," she said.
The Frisco Police Department has extended condolences to the families affected and reminded the public about winter safety. "Please keep in mind that snow and ice can create extremely slippery surfaces and lead to serious or even deadly accidents," police said in a statement. "Please stay alert, stay indoors when possible, and avoid any unnecessary outdoor activity until conditions improve."
The incident remains under active investigation with support from the Denton County District Attorney's Office. Authorities have not yet mentioned any criminal charges against the driver.
