Juneteenth Travel Delays Piling Up

Travelers planning to fly during the Juneteenth holiday weekend should prepare for significant delays and cancellations. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has warned that airports will be crowded, with more than 3 million passengers expected to pass through security checkpoints on Thursday (June 18) and Sunday (June 21). According to the TSA, travelers should arrive early, check flight statuses, and ensure their luggage is free of prohibited items to avoid delays.
Flight disruptions have already affected over 800 flights across the country, with the majority occurring at Dallas-Fort Worth and Charlotte airports. Most of these cancellations involve American Airlines, so passengers flying with them should verify their flight status.
Severe weather, including thunderstorms in the Midwest and Tropical Storm Arthur in the South, has exacerbated the situation, causing over 5,500 flight delays nationwide. Airlines such as Delta and Southwest have issued waivers allowing passengers to change travel plans without fees.
The ongoing disruptions are part of a larger aviation crisis that began on April 1, making today Day 77 of continuous elevated disruption in the U.S. aviation network. Airports like Charlotte and St. Louis are struggling with positioning debt from previous delays, further complicating the situation.
Passengers are encouraged to use programs like TSA PreCheck and CLEAR for expedited screening and to carry REAL ID-compliant identification. Airlines are required to provide automatic cash refunds for cancellations and controllable delays, as per the Department of Transportation's 2024 rule.
