At least 13 people have died following a massive Russian missile and drone attack on Ukraine, which targeted the capital, Kyiv, and several other regions. The attack, described by Kyiv's mayor Vitali Klitschko as the largest since the war began, involved ballistic and cruise missiles and drones. According to DW.com, over 90 people were injured, and significant damage was reported in 30 locations across Kyiv.
The strikes also affected other regions, including Kharkiv, Sumy, Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, and Cherkasy. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized the urgent need for air defense supplies, particularly Patriot missiles, from allies. He stated that these measures are crucial to preventing further attacks. NPR reported that the attack damaged 20 residential buildings in Kyiv, with residents seeking shelter in metro stations.
Russia claims the assault was a response to Ukrainian drone strikes on Moscow earlier in the week. These Ukrainian attacks have been part of a broader strategy targeting Russian military and energy facilities. Reuters highlighted that Ukraine's improved long-range drones have allowed it to strike deep inside Russia, causing significant disruption.
As the conflict continues, both sides face mounting casualties. A study by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) estimates that over two million soldiers from both nations have been killed or wounded since the war began in 2022. The recent escalation underscores the ongoing volatility and the urgent need for diplomatic solutions to prevent further loss of life.
