Meta AI App Sparks Privacy Concerns Over User Photos

Meta has launched a new AI image generator called Muse Image, which is already stirring controversy. The tool, developed by Meta Superintelligence Labs, allows users to create AI-generated images using photos from public Instagram accounts, raising privacy concerns. Critics argue that using people's photos without explicit consent is intrusive, especially since Meta's policy states that users won't be notified when their content is used in this way.
Muse Image, available for free on the Meta AI app, Instagram Stories, and WhatsApp, lets users manipulate photos by tagging a public profile. Although users can opt out through privacy settings, the feature is enabled by default. The Verge reported that privacy advocates are questioning why users must opt out instead of opting in.
Beyond the controversy, Muse Image offers various features, such as creating images from text prompts, editing photos, and generating custom visuals for advertising. Meta is also integrating Muse with its commerce services, allowing users to visualize furniture from Facebook Marketplace in their homes.
Despite its innovative features, Muse Image's privacy implications echo past issues for Meta. The company previously faced a $5 billion fine from the FTC in 2019 over the Cambridge Analytica scandal and shut down its facial-recognition system in 2021 amid regulatory pressure. With Muse Video in development, Meta continues to expand its AI offerings, though privacy concerns remain a significant challenge.
