Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte has been placed on the 10-day injured list due to a left knee issue, as confirmed by General Manager Mike Hazen on Thursday (August 20). The move follows Marte's unexpected absence from the team's series opener in Boston on Monday (August 17), where he was a no-show and subsequently placed on the restricted list.
Marte, a three-time All-Star, traveled back to Phoenix for tests on his knee. Manager Torey Lovullo noted difficulties in communication with Marte during this period. The Diamondbacks are currently in a tight race for the National League wild card, with a 67-61 record, trailing the San Diego Padres by one game.
Marte's absence is a significant blow to the team, as he has been a key player this season, hitting .249 with 21 home runs and 67 RBIs. This isn't the first time Marte has had an unexplained absence. Last season, he was placed on the restricted list after his home in Arizona was broken into during the All-Star break, causing him to miss three games.
ESPN reports that Marte's absence comes at a critical time as the Diamondbacks are vying for a playoff spot for the first time since their World Series run in 2023. Meanwhile, Marte's agent, Charisse Espinosa-Dash, stated that he is managing a personal matter and appreciates the support from fans and the team.
