Falcons' Michael Penix Cleared To Practice

The Atlanta Falcons have announced that quarterback Michael Penix Jr. is fully cleared to participate in practice, marking a significant step forward in the team's quarterback competition. Head coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed the news after the Falcons' 34-6 preseason victory over the Indianapolis Colts on Saturday (August 22). Penix, who was the eighth-overall pick in the 2024 draft, is recovering from knee surgery following a partially torn ACL last year.

Penix's clearance means he can now participate in 11-on-11 team periods, a crucial development as he competes with Tua Tagovailoa for the starting quarterback position. Tagovailoa, a former Miami Dolphins starter, joined the Falcons on a one-year deal in the offseason. His performance has been inconsistent during training camp, partly due to a back flare-up.

Penix, 26, has faced multiple injuries throughout his career, including three ACL surgeries. His return to full practice is a promising sign for the Falcons, who are eager to see how he measures up against Tagovailoa with no restrictions. According to Yahoo Sports, Penix has been limited to individual work and 7-on-7 periods since OTAs in the spring.

The Falcons' final preseason game is scheduled for Friday against the Miami Dolphins. While Stefanski has not confirmed if Penix will play, Tagovailoa is expected to see action. The outcome of this game could be pivotal in determining the starting quarterback for the Falcons' regular season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers on September 13.
