INTERVIEW: 3LAU On 'Is It Love' & Plays 'That Moment When...'

From making mashups, to catchy remixes (like his must-hear remix of Justin Bieber's single "Sorry"), to producing original tracks and performing at some of the world's biggest dance music festivals, 3LAU has certainly made a name for himself in the world of EDM. His latest tune? An addictive, light, upbeat tune perfect for the summer time called "Is It Love?" The 25-year-old producer/DJ, whose real name is Justin David Blau, recently stopped by iHeartRadio HQ in New York City where he told us about his new single during an exclusive interview.

Justin officially released "Is It Love" back in April, and the song has quickly become one of his biggest hits to date. However, the new single is a little bit different from what we're used to hearing from 3LAU with its groovy bass line, but the electronic music producer tells us he wanted to try something different. The track, which features Australian singer/songwriter/producer Yeah Boy, was created while 3LAU was in Australia, and is about someone catching your attention while out, wanting to meet them, and wondering ... "Is It Love?" The track is actually inspired by experiences both 3LAU and Yeah Boy has had.

On the inspiration behind "Is It Love"

"The inspiration for me, it was sort of about my current girlfriend, who I actually wasn't dating at the time that I wrote the song. I had met her in a music video of mine, she was the star of a music video of mine, but we were both doing our own thing at the time, and I was in Australia, she was in the US, and I knew I was totally in love with this girl, and I had only met her once. We talked online sometimes, we talked on Instagram. Finally, of course, seven months later the song wasn't even finished yet, we started dating. And it's kind of funny, because the song was written about her, and for Johnny, for the guy who sang this record, he had a really similar experience."

"This is me trying to come home to my favorite dinner, because I really want to eat sushi, and sushi is my favorite food. And this is how I feel while I'm eating it, and that's love."

"That moment, that moment when I get a cute text or a randomly unexpected sext this is, this is it. Because it's mischievous and fun at the same time."

That moment when they give you complete control of the TV remote, it's love because...

"This is the emoji when I have complete control of the TV remote or basically the AUX cord too. This is definitely the emoji for that. And it's love because I get to do what I want, and I like doing what I want."

That moment when they surprise you with breakfast in bed, it's love because...

"I'm always up first, so it never has happened in my life. But, when they surprise you with breakfast in bed, and you wake up and there's eggs benedict right there, that's love. Breakfast is the best. I guess it's a celebration for me. For most people, breakfast might not be a celebration. For me, breakfast is a celebration because it rarely happens. Because we're always going to the airport."

That moment they remember all of the cute milestones of your relationship, it's love because...

"This is how I feel when my girlfriend and I remember cute things in our relationship because it usually surrounds really good food or really, really nice wine. We're both wine people. And so this is the emoji I chose, and this specific one was when we were eating at a restaurant in the Wynn in Las Vegas, and the wine guy remembered the kind of wine that we liked, and he brought it to us the second time we came to the restaurant. It was just super cool. That makes an amazing restaurant. So this is the emoji."

That moment when they spend the extra time to make sure they look their best for date night, it's love because...

"That moment when she spends the extra time looking unbelievable for date night, this is the one because date night usually involves a club afterward, except my specific girlfriend it involves TV. Which is probably a good thing because clubbing is my job. But this is the emoji."

That moment when your fans send you love...

"That moment when my fans send me love, this is definitely the emoji. I actually do this very often. A lot of the time when I meet fans after a show, I don't have time to talk because I'm constantly moving around. So I just go like this, like as a thank you, and this is definitely the emoji. I couldn't be here without any of you guys, so thank you."
