It was good? Do you guys have a good holiday?
Enjoy it? Get them away relax a little bit, did you?
Speaker 1 (01:36):
Yeah? I didn't get away work for the most part.
Speaker 3 (01:39):
You know you got away from work, didn't you?
Speaker 2 (01:41):
Yeah? I did.
Speaker 4 (01:42):
I took two days they Wendy. Is that getting away?

Okay? Okay, well I take that. Yeah, I was at
home though. What about you? Did you get away or yea?
Speaker 3 (01:52):
In no, I was here. I worked actually on Christmas Day?
Oh okay for a little bit, not long.
Speaker 2 (01:58):
That's what I'm talking about. Work.
Speaker 1 (02:01):
Your big takeaway from the classic we saw last night
between the Bears and the Niners was.
Speaker 3 (02:07):
What Kyles Sana has to be Coach of the Year.
It's incredible. Think about who wasn't playing last night? They
have five Okay, party is not a star of stars.
There's a really good quarterback but if you take their
stars off that team, five top players off that team,
Krent Williams has won, George Kittle's won, Christian McCaffrey, Fred Warner,
(02:30):
and Nick Bosa, And how many of them were in
the lineup last night once Trent Williams went out one.
I mean, it's incredible. It's absolutely incredible what they've done
with that team. And if they win, uh this week
against Seattle, which we know Sam Darnold's on the road
and I don't care how bad San Francis Goose defenses,
They're going to win that game. Then they win two
(02:52):
games in the playoffs, and they played the super Bowl
at home, which is absolutely incredible. Now having said that
their defense is awful, but I do think that they
get party in that group gives them a legitimate chance
to be a threat in the postseason, no question about it.
Speaker 4 (03:06):
I gotta say, listen, there's there's no real door prize
or or feel good loss. But this, this this Chicago
Bears team is for real. I mean, could you have
come away from that game last last evening feeling just
as confident about the Bears and a loss as you
(03:27):
do about maybe the Niners in that win.
Speaker 3 (03:31):
Well, I think both their defenses are bad.
Speaker 1 (03:34):
I mean, you know who, Yeah, they can't rush the passer,
and neither one can get to the.
Speaker 3 (03:38):
Cock, can rush the quarterback. And when you play in
the playoffs and you can't rush the quarterback, that's going
to be a problem. So and let's not forget they're
an on site kick, boxed on side kick away from
losing that game to Green Bay last week, and so
we would be thinking differently of them. But I'm more
going look, I think Caleb Williams is taking big strikes.
I think Ben Johnson is a big, big time play caller.
I think they can run the ball. The line's good,
(04:00):
They're going to score points on offense. But I'm worried
about that defense. I mean, there when you can't rush
the passer and most quarterbacks had all day, I think
that's a big problem for both teams going forward.
Speaker 4 (04:10):
Which would you rather have, though, Pete, would you rather
have offense or would you have defense? Because it seems
like you got to make a choice these days. I mean,
you look at the Eagles, you got to choose. Do
you do you want a team that has a defense
that's going to make it make it work? Or do
you want to have a team like the Niners or
the Bears that have a offense that can make it work?
Speaker 2 (04:28):
Which one? Which one would be better?
Speaker 3 (04:30):
I'd rather be the Eagles because I think that there's
always a chance that Barkley's going to get it going,
you know what I mean, And that defense is suffocating,
and I think that Barkley can. We've seen him do it,
so I think they can get a god. I just
think the play call is bad for them, and Jalen
hurkss not play very well. But I'd rather be the Eagles.
I think you have to be able to knock the
other guys quarterback down. It's disaster and I don't see
(04:52):
that for either one of those two teams.
Speaker 1 (04:54):
Pete Prisco joining us here on Fox Sports Radio, senior
NFL columns for CBS Sports, CBS Sports HQ analysts. You
can get him on x at Prisco CBS. All Right,
So I mentioned this earlier that I was going to
ask you about it because back in August, when you
were doing your training camp tour, uh oh, you were
speaking glowingly about what you saw from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers,
(05:16):
and I don't know what transpired halfway through the season,
but they are a shell of themselves, and they find
themselves still with an opportunity to win at home and
get into the playoffs and probably most likely be a
one and done. What the f is going on in
Tampa Bay with the Buccaneers injuries.
Speaker 3 (05:35):
That team's been decimated. You know, they played yesterday without
their two starting guards and without Tristan Wurfs on the
offensive line. And I don't care what Baker Mayfield says.
He's hurt, he's hurt. He got hurt, and it very
thinks he got hurt in the Rams game. I think
he got hurt in the forty nine Ers game and
just kind of played through it. He's not throwing the
ball close to what he was throwing at early in
(05:56):
the season. And now they have their weapons back. It's
been one of those years. They didn't have the offensive line. Early,
they had the wide receivers going in out of the lineup.
Now the wide receivers are all back, the offensive line
continues to be banged up, and you go to the
defensive side of the ball. You talk about a team
that doesn't rush the passes that, well, that's them. They
went out and got Reddick, thinking that they who had
joined Diabi to be able to rush the quarterback with
(06:17):
Kanty inside. Kanty's not playing very isn't playing because he's
been hurt all year. The other guys aren't playing well.
The secondary has been giving up a bunch of bus
It's not a good look. And you know, and when
they can't score offensively, that's a problem because I don't
think they're very good defensively. Now, having said all that,
they're playing a quarterback or crew for fifty four yards
(06:37):
last this past week, fifty four for Ice Young, as
they started calling him in Carolina. He melted yesterday because
he was awful, and so I mean, yeah, did you
see that the teammates because he's been cool at the
end of games, he's won some games, so they started
calling them Ice Young.
Speaker 1 (06:53):
Well wait a second, have you identified the next quarterback
on your hit list? Have you Bryce now the guy
you're going to go after?
Speaker 3 (07:01):
He's been on he's been on my list. I don't
think he's very good.
Speaker 4 (07:05):
I mean, you guys are the same size. I would
think that would be like looking out for him, like
sticking up for him.
Speaker 3 (07:12):
Well, yeah, I'm in the same size and I'm not
playing quarterback in the NFL for a reason because I
am that size, right, I mean, I don't think he's
very good. And they have a tough situation now because
what do you do with them?
Speaker 4 (07:24):
You're stronger almost, you're built stronger, like you could probably
lift more weights than him though probably.
Speaker 3 (07:29):
Yeah, And so I just think that one of those
two teams is going into the playoffs. So if you're
at the NDFC teams, you want to be the number five?
Would you rather be number five? The number six or seven?
For sure? Right? You might might be number five than
in three because you could go play them. You go
play one of those two teams on the road and
I can't carry you know, like I know it's on
the road. But you would think that that's a good
(07:50):
pass for you to try and get to the next round.
Speaker 1 (07:52):
Oh yeah, yeah, totally agree.
Speaker 2 (07:54):
Speaking of trying to get to the round the first pick.
Speaker 4 (07:58):
Your your Raiders did what everybody thought that they would do,
but even in more impressive fashion than the maybe what
I had originally thought. I didn't think that they'd be
able to lose that badly to a team like the
New York Giants, but they did what what's your Is
it a rap? Is it a rap for Pete Carroll?
Is it a rap for this this coaching staff? Is
(08:20):
it another one and done?
Speaker 3 (08:22):
I don't know if it is for Pete Carroll, in
large part because I don't know if they can continue
to pay head coaches. I think the Gruden thing's still
in litigation for money they're paying him. They're still paying
what McDaniels, they're still paying Peers, they're paying they were
paying Chip Kelly six million a year. They're still paying
that contract out. How much can you keep letting go
out the door? And so I don't know if they
(08:44):
fire them, but they're awful and that was a tank job.
I don't care what anybody they can they can. I
mean the thing they did with with Crosby was terrible
and they just looked lifeless. But the problem with that
team is they overvalued Gino Smith, which everybody in the
league did last year. And you know, remember when the
(09:06):
Raiders signed, oh great signing Gino Smith. Look what he did? Well?
Do you think Seattle didn't know something when they let
him go? And so I think that's their problem. And
now they're in the number one pick spot and they
should stay there because they probably won't win next week.
And if they're there, what do you do you Thante
more Fernando Mendozer. In the battle for the number one pick,
one of those guys has to be the pick of
the Raiders, and the Giants messed up by winning. They
(09:29):
could have had the number one overall pick, and if
they had the number one overall pick, if they truly
believe Jackson Darter is their guy, then they could have
used that to trade and get a haul picks. And
yet they went out and won the game. So you win,
but you lose for winning in that situation.
Speaker 1 (09:43):
Yeah, The Max Crosby story is just it's wild how
obvious it is. They Pete Carroll comes out and says, well,
you know, we took a look at him. He was
hobbling to get on the team bus and we're looking
at him, and you know, we just made the right
call to send him home or to say he's not
going to play. He leaves a facility because he's pissed off.
(10:04):
And then Max Crosby posts to social media later on
that day him moving around fine, playing basketball, hanging out
with his daughter like everything, like to let everybody know Hey,
this is a tank job. I want to play and
they're not letting me play, Like, I don't know. Do
you think does the NFL look into this if the
Raiders aren't being forthright about his injury and he's at
(10:27):
home basically saying, look, I'm fine, but they won't let
me play because we're trying to tank so we can
get the first pick, Like, do you think the NFL
looks into this? Because you know the NBA's had problems
with this, but it feels as blatant as you can
get with the Raiders and how they've handled it.
Speaker 3 (10:40):
Well, the problem with looking into it is he probably
has played the last five game six games with a
knee injury, and he probably does need some kind of
procedure on the knee so they can get around it
that way. The problem is, did you put the tape
on last week when he did play? I mean, he
was a monster against the Texans. He was unblockable, and
(11:01):
so how can they justify it that way? So I
get it, but the reality is is it probably not
going to get much of anything coming back on him
in March, part because he probably does need some kind
of procedure done on his leg. So the reality is
he's hurt, he could have played through it, and they packed,
even if they would never admit it.
Speaker 2 (11:19):
Crazy.
Speaker 4 (11:20):
We've had a long conversation about the Stillers and the Ravens.
Speaker 2 (11:26):
It's clearly going to be a big topic this week.
Speaker 4 (11:28):
Because they're going for the divisional title against one another.
Yet the loser will not be in the playoffs. They'll
go home, and for I guess what it's worth. Whichever
team loses, it's got to be considered a hard disappointing
year for that team. And then I think the question
(11:51):
still remains, is it still considered the same for the
team that advances if they're not successful in the playoffs.
What's your take on the current You know, I guess
state of the Steelers and the Ravens because I feel
like they're very interchangeable conversations with the season, the team
as well as as the coaches.
Speaker 3 (12:13):
You know about ten weeks ago when these two teams
were meriandering through the season and you think one would
get hot and the other one was done and the
other one would get hot. You know, ten weeks ago,
maybe even longer, we said, ah, that division is going
to come down to the final week of the season
when the Steelers play the Ravens and you look at
and people say, what are you talking about, Well, it
always does, and you know what it will, in large
(12:35):
part because neither one of them are very good. I mean,
if you look at it, the Steelers without DK Metcalf
yesterday couldn't do anything. And you look at the Ravens.
They ran the ball and ran it right down Green
Bay throat the other day, but their defense is awful
right now, And so you look at it and you go,
who's the better team? Don't I'd say the Ravens would
(12:58):
be the one that could get fired in the playoffs
if Lamar Jackson is healthy and can turn and he
gives the ball to Henry. But the reality is they're
like the NFC teams. Is anybody not jocking to be
the number five team and go play one of those
two in the playoffs? I mean, I'd rather play them
for sure. So and the other part of that is
is Lamar Jackson playing this week. You know I had
(13:19):
the back injury. What was it, back, Bruce? You missed
the game for a back bruise, And so that you're
starting to hear rumblings out of Baltimore. That was a
story last week by Mike Preston about how they're tiring
of him not training at the facility and he needs
to take better care of himself. And so I think
there's a lot of stuff at stake in this game.
(13:40):
Is it Aaron Rodgers last game? It has everything the
NFL wants. We were joking around watching the game yesterday,
the Steelers game, saying well, if the NFL can do
anything in their power to make them lose that game,
they would because they want that game at prime time.
That's what they wanted. They wanted Marquee game and one
now they got one. So I'm looking forward to it.
It's going to be ugly football, and I don't think
the team that wins it really can go on to run.
(14:02):
But if you can't to answer me, which one could
possibly go on a run to the two of them,
I would pick the Ravens.
Speaker 1 (14:07):
Yeah. Pete Prisco with us here on Fox Sports Rady
for those that aren't familiar, and we talked about this
a little bit earlier, but if you're just joining us.
It was Mike Preston of The Baltimore Son who wrote
an article talking about Lamar Jackson, you know, sources saying,
you know, he stays up late playing video games and
falls asleep during team meetings, and you know he's not.
(14:27):
You know, they've changed the practice times and John Harborough's
kind of growing tired of it and it's worn out,
it's welcome a little bit like that just feels like,
and I was saying this earlier Pete, that feels like
it's a little bit too specific for it to just
be nothing, that it just was made up at of
thin air. And from what I've heard, you know, Mike
Preston's pretty connected and it's not He's not just making
(14:49):
stuff up. Even though John Harbord dismisses it. Where does
that report and those details land with you as somebody
who's been in this business a long time.
Speaker 3 (14:59):
Oh, I've known Mike rest in a long time, a
long time, and Mike press is not going to just
make that up. That's not what he is as a
as a journalist. So that he got that from people
inside the building, and it obviously is an issue. Look,
you know, Lamar Jackson throws it in the off season.
He comes down to South Florida down here and throws
at parks with his buddies and stuff. You can't. You
(15:20):
got to be around the facility. You got to take
care of yourself and and so that's that's something I've
never quite grasped. And you know, I was talking to Fred.
One of the guys told me Fred Warner of the
forty nine ers trains year round at the facility. You know,
he doesn't go. These guys go to these facilities and
LaVar you know all about them. They pay big money
to go train at the you know, these facilities in
(15:41):
South Florida and they get together and work out down there.
When you can stay with your team, train with your
own trainers, take advantage of your your free food and
free you know nutrition, and deal with your nutritionists. Why
would you not do that if you're If you're like
Fred Warner, goes, drives to the facility every day, works
(16:02):
out there, gets some advice from the trainers, knows what
he has to do to train for his job, and
you know, eat all their food. And these guys leave
and go scurry all over the country and pay big
money to go train with trainers who have no idea
what it's like to train for football. So I don't know,
I just think sometimes we overthink it and Lamar Jackson
needs to be more focused and stay around that facility more.
Speaker 2 (16:25):
Has he done, like has he hit his ceiling?
Speaker 4 (16:28):
Of all the quarterbacks around the league that you would say,
you know what, they had a good run, but maybe
they hit their ceiling, where does where does Lamar Jackson
fall in that category?
Speaker 3 (16:40):
Well? His is different in large part because he's improved
as a passer. But we still got to admit the
big part of what he is is his ability to
move around and hit, the threat of him to run
and the threat of him to help open up the run.
And so far since he's been back from his injuries,
he hasn't been able to run like he did. He
hasn't been he's been reluctant, his speeds have been down.
(17:02):
And so when you take that away from him, what
is he.
Speaker 2 (17:05):
As a quarterback?
Speaker 3 (17:06):
He's a small guy that can make plays in the
pocket and he's gotten better at it, but he's not
great at it unless he's got the threat to run.
And so that's the concern with Lamar Jackson. If I
were him, I would reinvent myself and become a fitness
guy who you know is focused on the football and
not playing video games, if that's indeed true, and and
(17:28):
take care of yourself to stay around the facility and
be more more present with your teammates in the off
season and go from there, because right now the injuries
have become a major factor for him. He's not a
big guy. Let's not forget that. He's not a big guy.
Speaker 1 (17:40):
And also, like it seems like he's got the flu
every week, like he like there's a practice he's he's
got the flu. Like I think he's in this like
seven straight Wednesday practices at this point. It just yeah,
it just feels like there's there's a lot going on.
Speaker 3 (17:53):
Well, if you have if you're if you're if you're
saying you have the flu and you don't sleep all
night because you're up playing video games, is that right
out for you?
Speaker 1 (17:59):
Yes? That yeah, that's what you know. Who needs chicken
noodle soup when you can just play you know, Call
of Duty until four?
Speaker 3 (18:06):
And we don't I mean, look, I might press into
a damn good reporter, so I kind of, you know,
I trust his sources on it. But if again, we
don't know if that's true, But if it is, it's
just a bad look for a franchise quarterback. It's just,
you know, is it better that he's out, you know,
getting bombed every night running the streets and getting in trouble. Absolutely,
But the good side of this is if you're staying
(18:27):
up all night, you're not getting asleep and your habits
aren't great to come in and practice hard every day.
Speaker 1 (18:32):
Are the Bills a viable Super Bowl contender?
Speaker 3 (18:35):
Well? One good thing that came out of and I
don't know how we take this one good thing they
came out of the game on Sunday is this it
played good defense? But is that because they played good
defense because the Eagles thing go on offense and they
actually showed up and played good defense. I mean, it's
something something has to give there. But look, with Josh
Allen playing quarterback, of course they're a viable Super Bowl
contender and they can get hot in the moment and
(18:56):
if their defense can play like that, sure they are.
Now I don't know if they can or is that
just because the Eagles are so bad on offense? Right now?
That did dominating? Do you realize the Eagles didn't have
any yards passing in the second half none, zero, not
one completion, And I think that's the second game that's
happened for them. And one of our guys had a
(19:20):
stat last night they said this the first time since
they started to keep in that stat in nineteen seventy
eight that a guy hasn't had completed passes in two
games in the same season in the second half. So
you know, but the Bill defense did show up and
play better, and I give them that. And if they
can play good on defense, they're dangerous to everybody. We
know Cook can run the ball. You know, Allen can
(19:40):
make those plays and down the field and outside the pocket.
So I'd be careful if any team in the playoffs
in the AFC they're saying, oh, Bills might be, you know, vulnerable,
because I don't think you want to play them. In fact,
of all the teams that you have a chance to
sit at home and get ready to play, that's the
one I wouldn't want to play.
Speaker 4 (19:58):
No, before we let you go, I was done, But
I just kind of thought about this. I never got
your like opinion on DK Metcalf. The dude came out
and held a full out press conference about him not
being a racist or whatever. He's he's sensitive about animal
rights and stuff.
Speaker 2 (20:17):
Like that or whatever. But what what's your take on
on that?
Speaker 4 (20:21):
Like him saying his kids are getting you know, threats,
you know, violent threats, you know, all kinds of different
I guess fallout and repercussions from what took place. What's
your you know, what's your take on DK in this
this scenario. What what's your take on the fan like
the interaction of.
Speaker 3 (20:41):
It all the fans of jackass Okay, the fans shut
your shut your mouth. You were trying to get advise
out of him. You wanted that to happen. You wanted
something to happen, and now you're going on a tour,
the publicity tour. You're probably going a final suit against
them and then go from there. So fans an idiot.
Me Kay's more of an idiot for going over and
doing what he did. I mean, look what happened to
the Steelers yesterday. Technically you could sit here and say,
(21:01):
if the Steelers don't beat the Ravens on Sunday, But
DK Metcalf's stupidity cost him a playoff birth because they
had they had they had three catches by Scotty Miller yesterday,
who led the team, and catches by receiver. Yesterday they
were limited on offense and large part because dk Metcalff
is the guy to stretched the field and get the
ball down of the field. Well, where was he one playing?
Because he was so caught up in the moment that
(21:22):
he had to go over there and tug on a
fan or slap him or whatever. He did it because
the guy said something about him, and so dk Metcalf
has to be smarter. But the fans of Jack asked,
he knew what he was doing. He was trying to
get a rise at him. He did it before, and
so that guy's a guy's a just it's mild to
think what he's doing right now because he's trying to
take advantage of the situation. He knew what he was doing.
(21:44):
It was all calculated. Chuck your mouth. Look, it's okay
to heckle players. I've done that before. Believe me, Back
in the day, I used to heckle like crazy. But
don't get to the point where you're making it personal
and the guy's going to come over and give you
a slap. Now, we don't know what he said, and
it doesn't sound like it was anything racial. You hope
like it wasn't, But dk have to be above that LaVar.
You played the game. I'm sure you're plenty of craft
(22:06):
that you wanted to go up in the stands and
beat the day, like to have a guy.
Speaker 4 (22:09):
I've heard some really really, really bad I told the
story the other day Kansas City one year. It was
it was really really bad. Like it was bad the
things they were saying. To me, It's so bad that
you almost would ask yourself the people in between or
the people beside those people who were saying the viscenities
(22:31):
that they were saying, why, Like why wasn't something done?
Speaker 2 (22:36):
That's how bad it was?
Speaker 3 (22:38):
Shut up, like, shut up, you idiot. The problem.
Speaker 2 (22:42):
I turned around to look for gohead.
Speaker 3 (22:44):
Good, God, here's the problem, because if you start opening
your mouth, next thing you know, you're in a fight
in the stands, And who the hell wants that, you
know what I mean.
Speaker 4 (22:51):
I'm not letting nobody pull me out of my character
that way. I'm there to perform. I realize it's a
show and we are the actors in the show. I
realized that you know it's reality television, but nonetheless, you
play yourself in the show.
Speaker 2 (23:06):
So I get it, and I often wonder.
Speaker 4 (23:10):
Why why people are allowed to holler out certain obscenities
the way that they are. Like I did get racial
obscenities hollered at me in that moment in particular, and
a ton of profanity, But you know, I always said
that where they're like, well, how'd you react? How'd you
re act? Turned around at first and it was like
(23:30):
come on, man, like it's it's a game, like like
are you okay? Then as they kept going on. I
always I did this on the field with players who
would try to get me, but I would do it
with fans too.
Speaker 2 (23:42):
I'd always tell.
Speaker 4 (23:43):
Them their mother, like like if you're calling me all
those obscenities, I'd be like, ah, your mother is or
oh your mother is that, or ah, ah you're talking
about your mom Like I just always that was always
my comeback, and so I didn't take myself too seriously.
So I make myself laugh and like that probably hurt
their feelings or something.
Speaker 3 (24:02):
Maybe their mom is shou said you should have said look,
he should have said, look, dude, you're over there. I'm
over here. But I guarantee if you were here and
I was right in front of you, you would be
saying that to my face.
Speaker 4 (24:13):
But I don't even I don't even you know, for me,
I didn't even take it. It wasn't that he if
he wants violence, it's never been that deep to me.
Speaker 2 (24:21):
That's that's the thing about it.
Speaker 1 (24:22):
Like he wants an altercation.
Speaker 2 (24:24):
It doesn't that I.
Speaker 3 (24:25):
Don't because you know why nowadays you don't have an
altercation somebody ends up there.
Speaker 4 (24:28):
You don't want any But you're right, doesn't that But
doesn't that concern you even more?
Speaker 2 (24:34):
With DK?
Speaker 4 (24:35):
Like you know, if you watch the video, he's standing
there with a police officer. He's standing there talking to
a police officer. He clearly says something that has to
do with this fan because he he finishes the conversation
and then works his way over to the fan. Once
he works his way over to the fan, it's a
(24:55):
totally it's a total violent like act. It's an AGGRESSI
it back not that I won't say valiant. It's a
very aggressive act. And what it is that he did.
Speaker 3 (25:05):
To go over you don't even go over him. You
gave him what he wanted by going over there first
and foremost, I mean, whether he pulled his hair or
hit him or whatever he did to him, you would
know that guy. I don't think that was the guy's
seat either. If you look at it, he's down like
where there's a security person behind him. He's standing hanging
over the railing in the aisle. I don't think that's
(25:26):
where he was sitting.
Speaker 4 (25:27):
And so no one reacted to what the guy said,
so I don't think there was He didn't say anything
crazy out his mouth because.
Speaker 3 (25:33):
He said he was making fun of his first.
Speaker 4 (25:36):
Real name, right, yeah, right, I'm not going like, why
are you going to grab somebody by their hands.
Speaker 1 (25:41):
It's like you remember when when Miles Garrett clubbed Mason
Rudolph over the head with the helmet and then afterwards said,
well there's a racial slur yelled and nobody heard it,
Like there were people there and nobody heard it, Like
I don't. I don't think he said but the guy.
But that was still like there were people fighting.
Speaker 3 (25:57):
The My hecking back in the day was kind of fun.
Like I remember one time we went to a baseball
game here and we had a few afternoon in the
spring training and the Braves were playing down in Fort
Lauderdale and Ozzie Virgil was a player on the Braves
back then, and he struck out and he was walking
over and I'm like, hey, Ozzie, you know any realtors
(26:18):
in Richmond, because that's where they're triple agents.
Speaker 1 (26:21):
That's rupeete. Yes, I was trying to make the team.
You gotta clown them like that. You ought to be
ashamed of yourself. Hey, let me ask you this before
we let you go. We're going to be talking to
you next Monday. It's Black Monday yearly tradition. That's not
good news for coaches in the NFL. Do you have
one or two potential surprising coaching casualties that could take
(26:42):
place on Monday?
Speaker 3 (26:44):
I don't know if surprising surprising is the word, but
you know what, if the Bucks don't make the playoffs, Yeah,
there's one. I mean, if they don't make the playoffs,
I think Todd Bowles could be in trouble, even though
he got a contract extension last year. And then you
know what happens with Zach Taylor. I think that's another
one to keep an eye on as well. You know,
they keep saying that they're not going to fire him,
(27:04):
but we'll see. Yeah, So I think those are two.
You know what happens with McDaniel they wanted to keep them.
He made a little run, went rotten for a couple
of weeks anyone again, So I think ultimately they might
decide to keep him. The bad dues with that, though,
they're going to hire a general manager. So if you
hire a general manager, you're stuck with Mike McDaniel as
your guy, at least for a year. I mean that
(27:25):
that's that's a tough situation to take over a job
unless you're one of his guys. And then the reality is,
if you're hiring a guy that likes Mike McDaniel, you're
not hiring might not be hiring the best guy for
the organization to run it. So I think they have
a problem in Miami if they keep them.
Speaker 1 (27:37):
Get him on X at Prisco CBS. He's Pete Prisco,
senior NFL columnists for CBS Sports, CBS Sports HQ analyst.
Always a good conversation here on a Monday, Pete. We
appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (27:49):
Happy, Where's Brady? Come on, don't do that, Pete, I
don't know, don't don't draw attention to that.
Speaker 1 (27:56):
Come on, Pete, all right, ask him?
Speaker 2 (28:01):

it's like it's like just start you okay, can we
just I'm here, let's go.
Speaker 2 (31:01):
It's actually think you'd be good.
Speaker 3 (31:02):
At uh, it's good at everything. Let's go.
Speaker 2 (31:08):
Okay, what's to get this?
Speaker 3 (31:12):
So?
Speaker 1 (31:13):
Indean, I'm curious though, at this point of the year,
how would you assess the year from an officiating standpoint? Like,
because obviously you know fans are going to complain. You
hear it all the time on social media and see
it all the time, But like, how would you assess
the year from an officiating standpoint, how they've done well.
Speaker 7 (31:32):
Look, the narrative, and the narrative is always the same.
It's it's it's the officiating is getting worse. The scrutiny
is never it's going to continue to increase and in
every game, and there's so much riding on it, and
and not just from a competitive standpoint. We've got gambling,
and we've got fantasy, We've got everybody is so you know,
(31:55):
locked in on every every play. But from a at
least from an informed perspective, in terms of the time
that I've spent, the people that I've been around and
understanding the game from that side, it isn't as good
as it should be. It really isn't. And I think
the on field officials are struggling in some areas. I
(32:15):
think replay is struggling in some areas, and you certainly
don't want that going into the playoffs. And that's going
to be and you you know, the hope always is
that with the playoffs you narrow the pool of people involved.
You know, there's one game at a time, you're going
to have less officials, your higher highest rated officials working replay. Again,
(32:36):
with one game going on at a time. Don't if
your focus isn't on four or five different games, you
hope that you don't have any issues. And but again, overall,
I don't think it was a great year. I think
there's some things that need some improvement. And that's kind
of you know, just gramat with it.
Speaker 4 (32:55):
Well.
Speaker 8 (32:55):
I could sense the need for improvement through your guys
videos that you inmight you deed so I could I
could give you. I guess I'll throw out a list
of plays at some point here with you. But I
do want to ask this, why not add another official
if they're having a hard time seeing it on the
field in real real time. I know you guys in
the past have been like, oh, they don't need it
(33:15):
whatever else, But I feel like just at a college
has it, well, why not add an additional official on
the field in the NFL too, Yeah.
Speaker 7 (33:24):
We looked at that ten fifteen years ago, and I
think I think spacing and the location of the official
was always a challenge. They moved the umpire was the
traditional position where college still has that umpire in the
defensive backfield kind of like a linebacker level, maybe a
little deeper now, and they moved. They moved that that
(33:46):
umpire out of there for safety reasons. So it's hard
to say, Okay, well the game's safer, we can move
you back in there. You know, you were seeing a
lot of crossing routes, a lot of a lot of
things that were happening where that umpire was getting, you know,
getting in the way, and a lot of traffic. And
I think that ultimately where to put that official. I
think there was a concern with the committee, Okay, an
(34:06):
extra set of eyes. Are we going to get more flags?
Do we need more flags than the game? It's it's
I can kind of see both sides of it, and
I think that's one of those you know, college with
the eighth official, it's kind of been more of just
like a ball spot or pace because the college game,
from a tempo standpoint is so much faster than the NFL,
(34:27):
and they felt they needed that additional initial body to
keep up with the pace. So I think the NFL
has gone the other route where where it's not it's
a replay issue and we got it, we got it.
We need replay to fix everything. And I'm not sure
that's the right approach either, because we just can't review
every single thing, and so I'm sure those conversations will
(34:47):
continue with it, whether it's full time officials, whether it's
an eighth official. But again, I think it comes down
to it comes down to teaching and training and consistency
and that messaging, which which really the officiating department just
had to continue to work at.
Speaker 4 (35:02):
Dan are is holding? Is holding getting redefined in the league?
And I don't know if I see it as much
in college, but is it getting redefined in in the league, Like,
for instance, a pass rusher. I've seen more than my
fair share of pass rushers.
Speaker 2 (35:23):
Getting pulled to the ground. I've seen.
Speaker 4 (35:28):
Possible tacklers getting impeded from the runner by a clear,
blatant hold of some sort impeding them. Is it just
getting redefined in terms of what a hold is versus
you know what, like you know what's being called versus
what's not being called.
Speaker 3 (35:50):
Well, from what.
Speaker 7 (35:51):
I've seen and look officiating the part they put out
videos every week, we get access to those videos. Those
videos go to the clubs, they go to the officials
and they'll talk about some things like holding or past
appearence or rules rules things. So holding hasn'to my knowledge
hasn't been redefined. What what what is holding? The definition
of holding, how they want the officials to call holding
(36:14):
hasn't changed. I do think there's there's an overall sense
of and this has been kind of happening percolating the
last couple of years, is they they don't want games
with a ton of fouls. So so you want it
to be clear and obvious. And I'm not saying that's
necessarily a bad thing. You don't want to be overly technical.
(36:35):
But if you keep preaching that and you keep well,
we can't have a lot of flags, we have a
lot of flags, then there's going to be plays where
officials just you know, they see it, they go wow
that I think that's foult. But I'm not going to
you know, I got this in the back of my
mind that we can't we don't want a whole bunch
of flags in the game. So I'm gonna I'm going
to keep it in my pocket. I think that might
be happening. Look, takedowns, those have to be called. There's
(36:57):
there's debatable ones where you know, was there restriction and
you know, did the did the offensive lineman or whoever
it is, did they did they really restrict that defender?
Did they have good seed? Did they say square? Those
types of things. But the big takedowns, the big the
bear hugs, the hook, the hooks, those types of things,
they both have.
Speaker 2 (37:17):
To be called.
Speaker 1 (37:19):
Dean Blandino joining us here on Fox Sports Radio, Fox
Sports NFL college football rules analysts get them on X
at Dean Blandino. Who's the best crew, like at this
point that you've seen this year? If I'm one of
those paranoid fans always worried about, well they're out to
get us whatnot, if you see this crew or this
official calling your game, you can feel good that they're
(37:41):
at least going to get majority of the time the call, right.
Speaker 7 (37:46):
Yeah, you know, I think each crew has strengths and weaknesses.
You know, you always look at them at the referee.
The referee really sets its tone. That's the quarterback. You know,
when I look at those those referees, Bill Vinovich, Checkers
does a great job on Torbert, I think does a
great job. But every crew, and a lot of these
crews they've been you know, once they get to the postseason,
(38:09):
it's not the same crew that you'll see during the
regular season. Those like like I said, it's the highest
rated officials at each position. They'll be they'll move them around.
There will be some continuity. It's not I don't think
we'll see a crew that is brand new in terms
of all seven officials who haven't worked together, so there'll
be some continuity. Maybe it's maybe it's three officials, maybe
(38:31):
even four officials that that have been on the same
crew during the regular season. But these crews are going
to change during during the postseason, so it's hard to
kind of say that that crew is is the best crew.
I think the referee really it starts there, and I
think we'll see the best referees in the postseason. And
hopefully you don't have any of these, you know, some
of these issues we've seen during the regular season.
Speaker 8 (38:53):
Do you know, want to ask you about a defensive
pass interference? But when a ball seems like it was
a catchable. There was a play in the Broncos Chiefs game.
I believe patz Artana was the player called with with
DPI in this case. Just help me understand, like how
far out of bounds or how high or because that
(39:14):
was when I looked at and I go, okay, that
wasn't at all catchable and yet I understand what I
took place on the field, But at what point of
the officials go, yeah, okay, there's no chance of the
receiver getting that.
Speaker 2 (39:26):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (39:27):
I think I think this concept of uncatchable, it's like
it's like what what unketchable is in reality and how
it's applied for the rule in the NFL or not
the same, Like there's gonna be balls, what you're gonna say,
there's no way you could have caught that. But the
philosophy has always been that these are you know, these
(39:47):
are tremendous athletes to assume that they can get to
the football, assume that they can make that play, and
it has to be really above and beyond, Like there's
some guidelines in terms of you know, if you've if
the receivers outside the numbers in the balls front over
their heads, it's how high you know, how if you
airmail it into the fifth row, that's not catchable. And
(40:09):
I think they use the sideline. If it lands in
the white that's typically you know, that six foot boarder,
that's typically going to be considered catchable if it's somewhere
in the bench area. Now it starts to become closer
to Hey, he couldn't have made a play on the ball.
It's so subjective it is, and you're going to lean
toward making you catchable. So I think that's what leads
to some of these plays where you go, wow, that
(40:31):
I don't think he could have caught that. But but
the way it's applied, they're gonna they're going to give
the receiver the benefit of the doubt.
Speaker 2 (40:39):
I'm good.
Speaker 4 (40:40):
I know you get tired of answering questions about you know,
obviously what the rules are.
Speaker 1 (40:44):
I mean sorry, I mean you can ask me about
other stuff.
Speaker 2 (40:48):
Is there anything like what?
Speaker 3 (40:49):
What?
Speaker 2 (40:49):
What should we have asked you about?
Speaker 4 (40:51):
Dean? Like give us something that you've been like? Man,
I wish they would ask me. I got one for you, Dean.
How is your Christmas?
Speaker 2 (40:56):
Yeah?
Speaker 7 (40:58):

of NFL football.
Speaker 8 (41:08):

outdoor heater fire pit thing and I'm like, I didn't
order this, what is this? And then ended up being
from Tom and he sent me a bunch of stuff.
I got a He gave me like a personalized sign
jersey like it's you know, and I don't know what,
like what am I going to get him? Like the
(41:45):
flag with like you know, keep keep keep on trucking.
You know, I don't know you.
Speaker 8 (41:52):
Could have you could have gotten a picture of the
Tuck Rule play and just said hey, I got your back,
like you could sign it and give that.
Speaker 7 (41:58):
So yeah, I don't know what do you get the
guy that has everything?
