It's a Herd Fox Sports Radio, LaVar Arrington, Jonas Knox
in for Colin. You can find us as always on
the iHeartRadio app. You can listen to us on hundreds
of affiliates all across the country. On this Monday, in
which people have opened up the offices of Bitch and

(00:42):
Mode to discuss what the f that was that the
NBA rolled out during All Star weekend.

Speaker 3 (00:49):
They was tweaking. I mean I was tweaking on NBA
All Star weekends. It's just.

Speaker 4 (00:58):
You know, people not real much, not real thrilled with you.

Speaker 2 (01:02):
Yeah, the current format or whatever this this format was.

Speaker 3 (01:05):
This past weekend.

Speaker 2 (01:07):
You had a dunk contest featuring a guy who's played
you know, fourteen seconds in the NBA Win it again.
You had whatever, this rinky dink circus tent pop up
event that was supposed to be the All Star Game
show back up, and people are not happy about it
and are not thrilled with the content and the viewing experience.

Speaker 4 (01:27):
That they got bar over the All Star weekend.

Speaker 5 (01:30):
I mean I was thrilled because I didn't have an
experience because I didn't view it.

Speaker 2 (01:33):
Dan, If you want me to break down who had
the best dunk of the night on Saturday.

Speaker 3 (01:40):
I watched it. I watched the highlights of it all.

Speaker 5 (01:43):
But to watch all of it, you know why it
doesn't have that type of mass app because, let me
tell you something, them dunks were crazy good. They're crazy
good dunks, man, And that used to be the highlight
of somewhat of an NBA season. That was what you wanted,

(02:07):
you waited for. You were excited, who's going to be
in the dunk contest? Who's doing it this year? And
you wouldn't learn, like you said, somebody who doesn't even
play very many minutes. You would learn about new people
and they would become celebrities. I'll never forget when Kenny
Skywalker won the dunk contest doing like like aero dynamic,

(02:27):
like acrobatic, like you know, like a ballet. He was
doing ballet in the air when he was dunking, like
Kenny's Skywalker wasn't like a dope basketball player for the Knicks,
but we found out, we learned about who he was
because of the way he was dunking like. It just
built a lot of It built a lot of brands.

(02:49):
And in the NBA back in the day, like in
the late you know, mid eighties, early nineties, you know, nineties,
like it was, All Star Weekend was a thing. And
I think I think the NBA is suffering from the
same exact thing that the NFL is suffering from as

(03:11):
it applies to their All Star weekend, which is what
is the relevance of these weekends? What can you do
to make these weekends more relevant than what they are?

Speaker 3 (03:23):
And I don't.

Speaker 5 (03:24):
I think it's because of technology and all of these
different things that's going on, fast paced technology. I think
it's very it is a riddle that the NFL or
the NBA has yet to figure out.

Speaker 2 (03:38):
So the way they laid it out was, it's four
different teams. You had rising stars, you had just like
whatever if the TNT crew had their teams, and to
break down the different categories and they would all meet
up and then they would go into the final just
team Shack, Kenny, Chuck, Candae Park like all that stuff.
It was just a fiasco, like there's just there's there's

(04:00):
too much going on. It was not all that entertaining.
It wasn't funny. Like they tried their hardest to try
and add comedy to it. It wasn't funny. And so
Draymond Green, who is you know, slowly becoming better and
better and better, and his media career after he's done play,
it's already blossoming. After his career is over, he's going
to be, you know, sitting with you know, the the

(04:23):
great medium, the great former players to ever do it
post career when it comes to the media. He spoke
last night on TNT and gave a brutally honest critique
of this new format.

Speaker 6 (04:34):
You work all year to be an All Star and
you get to play up to forty and then you're done.
This is so unfair to Victor Winbyama, who just took
this game really seriously, Chake Gilges Alexander who just took
this game really seriously. When you talk about chasing after
the points, wreckers, mellow with Kobe and all these guys
who've had great story nice they don't get the opportunity
to do that with this game. Also, we can watch

(04:57):
some rising stars. We're about to watch that Olympic team.
Now we get to treat of watching the Olympic team
play I against the U nineteen team.

Speaker 4 (05:05):
Come on, what are we doing all of one to ten?

Speaker 3 (05:07):
Your thoughts of the format ten being the best? Yes,
let's zero sucks.

Speaker 2 (05:17):
And that's a fair honest assessment. You know what, I
think the real problem is with the NBA. I think
the problem is the timing of it all that why
would you have because listen, you mentioned the NFL all
All Star games minus Major League Baseball are awful. They're
awful like the Pro Bowl looks like, you know, an

(05:40):
airing of Double Dare from twenty years ago. It's like
you're waiting for some guy to slide down a chocolate
slide and pull a flag out of the nose.

Speaker 3 (05:47):
Like it's awful.

Speaker 2 (05:48):
Like whatever they've they've thought they were doing to try
and protect players in the Pro Bowl, it's terrible. It's
not so much that the All Star Game sucks, it's
the timing of it all. The NFL season just ended,
there are people that are looking for things to watch,
and the NBA throws out this instead of Hey, why

(06:09):
don't we maybe do the All Star Game? I don't know,
like do it the same weekend of the Pro Bowl?
Do it earlier, Like let's let's let's move it up earlier,
so that that way, when the NFL season is over,
we're putting on primetime marquee matchups. You want to throw
Celtics Thunder on because they're two of the best teams
in the league, that's fine. You want to throw the
Lakers with Luke on, but do that and present your

(06:32):
product timing wise, in a better imagine. If you're an
NBA fan and you're like, all right, I'm gonna give
this NFL a try, and the first thing you see
is the Pro Bowl should be looking around and go.

Speaker 3 (06:44):
What the theF is this?

Speaker 2 (06:46):
If you're the NBA, I don't know why they refuse
to counter program. I don't know why they refuse to
acknowledge you're not even the second most popular sport anymore.
You're third behind college football. Why don't you like adjust
your timing We've talked about, you know, start the season
on Christmas Day and move it back so you're not

(07:07):
competing with the NFL during and college football in the
World Series and made all the other stuff that goes
on in the fall. Move your season back. In this case,
this feels like an easy fix. Just have your All
Star game sooner, whatever you want to roll out, But
the first weekend out of the gate with no football,
this is the product you present it. It doesn't make

(07:29):
any sense to me because it's an awful watch. And
now all the conversation is about, man, the league is broken.
It needs to do this, it needs to do that.
Instead of we could be talking about great games, great matchups,
like make it a mar Que moment to where NFL
season's over, We'll take it from here, and instead they
rolled out crap.

Speaker 5 (07:49):
Well this again, I'll say the saddest part of the
commentary outside of it being true, is is that the
Dunks were phenomenal. They weren't just good, they were phenomenal,
and nobody cared.

Speaker 4 (08:07):
You know who cared?

Speaker 5 (08:08):
The people who are probably upset right now that I
said nobody cared, And that's like the niche portion of
basketball fanatics. You have some basketball purists who love to
judge anybody who doesn't, which you had that in every sport,
but those are the people who care. What I don't
understand is, again, how do you allow for such a

(08:34):
disconnect to take place on something that has been such
a major part of our American culture to slip into
non relevance. I just don't get it. Like the three
point contest, people like watching it. That's something that people

(08:55):
will watch. It was something that it mattered. But no
mistake about it. You enjoyed the game because you knew
in the second half they were all going to play
and they were gonna play hard, and they were gonna
want to win the game, and the dunk contests like
that's what it was. And I just I asked myself

(09:16):
when when I when we were coming into the topic,
I asked myself, is this just a symptom of me?
Like old heads are always the ones that say, oh,
it was so much better when when I was coming up,
it was it was so different. Dah da da these
days and you guys, you young young bucks, don't know
anything about you know what it's all about?

Speaker 3 (09:37):
This that is so different now? Am I am? I?

Speaker 5 (09:41):
Like I gotta take a step back and say, am
I coming at it from the wrong lens from the
wrong perspective, and I looked. I looked a social media
because social media can now give you an idea of
how you're feeling and what the algorithms are, and because
if it's something that's something, it's gonna be there, it's
gonna pop up, it's gonna like you're making fun of Jello,

(10:05):
You're making fun You're making fun of his song. That's
one of the highlights of the whole deal is making
fun of Jello being being the main that's your main performer.

Speaker 3 (10:15):
What's there to make fun of one one song?

Speaker 5 (10:17):
Like it's not even like the dude got an album out,
Like the dude has one song that they may go
viral and it's not even really a real performer. Like
I'm sitting there, I'm like, you did not need all
this gimmicky stuff. And it made me take a step

(10:37):
back and say to myself, are we now looking at
an NBA that is a personality less NBA. That's what
it made my ultimate my ultimate thought and my conclusion
was do we have an NBA now, Like do you

(10:57):
know the personality of Victor Winban wimb Bin Yama? Do
you know his personality?

Speaker 2 (11:02):
Uh? Yeah, well he reads books before games, which do
you know his personality?

Speaker 5 (11:10):
You know, you know why we like Anthony ant Man
so much because it's the first time we get a
pulse of somebody having a freaking personality that You know
why we like Draymond Green because we get a pulse
of what a person. Do you know who Draymond Green is?
Do you know how he is? Sure exactly exactly Steph

(11:34):
Steph Curry, relatively obscure. You know he could shoot the ball.
You know he's a good dude, does things in the community.
You know his why, But do we really know his personality?
You have those type of personalities from back in the day,
but it's like they're like not, they're not the aid
list group of celebrities.

Speaker 3 (11:52):
That's you knew who Michael Jordan was.

Speaker 5 (11:54):
In fact, Michael Jordan told all of us to come
fly with him, and every one of us stopped. We
could fly, And that's why we still be wearing this
I got. I don't have no Jordan's on today, but
I had some on yesterday. I had some on yesterday,
and I'd be damn if I don't have Jordan's on
more often than it.

Speaker 7 (12:13):
Right.

Speaker 4 (12:14):
Bottom line A New Ballads. We knew who.

Speaker 5 (12:17):
Dominique Wilkins was, and we were all trying to beat
the Human Highlight film.

Speaker 3 (12:21):
We all were.

Speaker 5 (12:22):
You knew whose foot, what it was. He was the
more quiet one. He was like that quiet one. But
you had so many personalities. Charles Barkley telling you to
f off. I'm not your your role model, I'm not
your kid's role model. I'm not your role model. I
think what has happened with the NBA more specifically, which
you shouldn't lose because they don't wear helmets. You don't

(12:45):
have to battle people not knowing who you are and
what you look like. You're six foot whatever, looking like
an avatar.

Speaker 3 (12:53):
You gotta have. There has to be more more.

Speaker 5 (12:56):
Established personalities like throwing guns up in the club, throwing
one's strippers, like you can't have John Morant, who is
one of your biggest names and dopest players. That's how
we know you, that's how we know you. Like that's
Jason Williams back in the day and he's like the
degenerate of all the superstars. But even then you knew

(13:19):
who Jason Williams was. Personality was because it was a
point to make sure that the personalities were getting consumed
by the consumer. You're selling the game. We know who
Lebron James is. We know his personality, we know who
he is. He drives it because his personality and us
knowing him, us going on this NBA journey with Lebron

(13:41):
makes sense. How many players in today's NBA can we
say that about when you could say that about each team,
each team. If you were a Pistons fan, it was
Vinnie the Microwave, it was Isaiah Thomas, it was Joe Dumars,
it was Rick Mahorn, and you knew who they were.

Speaker 3 (14:00):
Because they had They all had Bill Lambert.

Speaker 5 (14:03):
They all had their their personalities that you love that
made them the bad boys. If it was the New
York Knicks, from Oakley to Mason to Ewing to Starts
to Mark Jackson, you knew who these people were by
market and their personalities drove the game and they mattered.

(14:23):
From the Celtics to you name it, the Rockets, they
all had their different personalities. The Portland Trailblazers, the Indiana Pacers,
sitting there choking, Reggie, Reggie Miller. We got to know
Reggie Miller. He's sitting there choking himself out to Spike Lee.
There were so many great moments that built a relationship

(14:46):
between the players, the teams, and the fans.

Speaker 3 (14:50):
It's unrecognizable. You don't have that. I mean, am I
off on this?

Speaker 4 (14:55):
Do we?

Speaker 5 (14:55):
There's that's a disconnect. That's a disconnect like, what's what
is the connection to the player, what is the connection
to the players as in general, and what's the connection
to the team. Where has that gone? Because I think
in a way, largely in part because of fantasy football
and all this stuff going on with gambling, I think
it's decentralized football as well.

Speaker 3 (15:17):
I think that's a large.

Speaker 5 (15:18):
Part of the problem that we have in football at
this point now as well, is that decentralizing of what
the fan could really focus in on, in that connection
to the player and that connection to the team.

Speaker 2 (15:31):
I think it's been I think it's been removed. Well,
I mean, the good news is the All Star Weekend's over, So.

Speaker 3 (15:36):
There you go.

Speaker 2 (15:38):
Hopefully this is the last time we got talked about it.
At least at least there's that. So so if you're
not a fan of the All Star Weekend, congratulations, it's Monday.

Speaker 3 (15:46):
It's over.

Speaker 2 (15:46):
So it is the Herd here on Fox Sports Radio,
LeVar Arrington, Jonas Knox sitting in for Collin. So we
are going to have some herdline news coming up later
on this hour with Greg Twoy starring Greg Twoy. We'll
be doing that throughout the course of the show as
well too, as we take you all the way up

(16:07):
until three pm Eastern time noon Pacific. Here without further ado,
he is Pete Prisco, senior NFL columnist for CBS Sports,
CBS Sports HQ Analysts. You can get him on x
at Prisco CBS. Pete, how we feel in here on Tuesday?

Speaker 8 (16:23):
Are you guys? Is this like a little bit of
a promo, a promotion for you guys? Have you stepped
up to the league?

Speaker 4 (16:29):
Is that what this said?

Speaker 8 (16:30):
Yea, Pete, No, man, I'm kidding.

Speaker 3 (16:33):
It's like little league. It's like little league. We're a
pinch hitter.

Speaker 8 (16:35):
You know you struck out three times around?

Speaker 3 (16:39):
Oh wow?

Speaker 5 (16:42):
Say that when we was in New Orleans, Damn, talk
your little ass off that stage.

Speaker 8 (16:48):
Before I even got on the stage with you, you
were reminding me about.

Speaker 5 (16:52):
Mike team You're ten because this as a phenomenal ten.
You gotta be honest, that is a very distinctive ten, Pete.
I mean, let's be clear. You got broad shoulders, you
got a good tan. I was giving you all the
props in the world. Now you come on here shooting
at me.

Speaker 8 (17:06):
You know, I don't know if you were giving me props,
you would take a shot. It's all good.

Speaker 5 (17:11):
Props, my guy, Pete, since since d C, come on, man,
we got history.

Speaker 8 (17:18):
You know, a.

Speaker 2 (17:20):
Pete, what did Why did you piss off Eagles fans
the way that you did?

Speaker 7 (17:24):
What you do?

Speaker 4 (17:25):
Now?

Speaker 3 (17:25):
Why do it?

Speaker 4 (17:26):
Would you do?

Speaker 2 (17:26):
Now all these other quarterbacks you would take over Jalen Hurts?
And now the fan base is going after you on
social media. Do you haven't to see any of that, Pete?

Speaker 8 (17:34):
Oh yeah, I see it. And I was on a
Philly radio station today and another couple of them have
reached out and everybody wants to take a shot at me.
And and the question was posted to me, which quarterback
would I take over a bunch of different quarterbacks? Would
you take him for the next five years over Jalen
Hurts and a bunch of them. I said yes. And
so now of course the Philly fans are going nuts.

(17:55):
And and you know, fresh off the Super Bowl. They
can yell and scream all they want, but the reality
is about the last month of the season, they weren't
sitting there raving about their quarterback either.

Speaker 3 (18:05):
I don't care what they.

Speaker 8 (18:06):
Say, Coach Oyah, he's a good player, but would I
take him over certain quarterbacks in the league. The answer
to that question.

Speaker 3 (18:15):
Is not what Herbert exact okay, number, okay, would.

Speaker 8 (18:19):
You take him over Justin Herbert?

Speaker 4 (18:20):
I wouldn't.

Speaker 3 (18:21):
M I'm not going to answer what what?

Speaker 4 (18:24):
What?

Speaker 3 (18:25):
What you guys think?

Speaker 5 (18:25):
Why won't you answer, because I'm just because it's your
questions that you answered, So I was just letting you
have it.

Speaker 9 (18:32):
I think Herbert's an interesting one. Herbert's an interesting one
because I think if you're I think the real question
is what Howie Roseman take Justin Herbert over Jalen Hurts,
And I would imagine he would say, yes, dang, well.

Speaker 8 (18:49):
There's a And the other one was Trevor Lawrence. I said,
look right now, I'd say there there I take. I
have a hard time picking between the two of them
because the Hurts has played better, but Lawrence is much
more upside in my mind, you know, And so that
was a tough one for me. I got they got
mad about that. Dak Prescott. Now, Dak Prescott LEDs the
league in touchdown passes last year.

Speaker 3 (19:10):
Stop you'd take Hurts over him? Right now?

Speaker 4 (19:13):
Are you serious?

Speaker 3 (19:14):
You take Dak over Hurts?

Speaker 8 (19:16):
I don't know if I would. I don't know if
he's by the way in that little playoff running. He
just had a average throwing about two hundred yards passing,
and and and you know the sack numbers that he
holds the ball way too long. His sack numbers. He
has thirty eight sacks on the season. And he threw
like two hundred, which is ties his career high from
two years ago. And he threw to under almost two

(19:36):
hundred few passes. He owns the ball too long. He's good.
I see the way I look at it. Guys, you
could take one through five, and there's now a five
because Jade Daniels is now in that five. The one
through five, those guys are clearly above everybody else. And
then the next group of seven or eight, nine guys
are all kind of lumped in together.

Speaker 3 (19:55):
If you ask me, I'm going to help us get
off this topic.

Speaker 9 (20:00):
Another quarterback, one that seems to be disgruntled with this situation,
with this franchise, and he's a guy that you've been
very high on Pete. You know, you didn't necessarily predict
him never won a Super Bowl yet, but you said
he's gonna win multiple That's that's Joe Burrow.

Speaker 6 (20:17):
Uh.

Speaker 9 (20:17):
Do the Bengals get Jamar Chase t Higgins and Trey
Hendrickson all done this offseason? And if they you don't
think they do. How does the long term out look
for Burrow in Cincinnati? Do you think he's going to
eventually get frustrated? He may end up somewhere else like
Carson Palmer.

Speaker 8 (20:37):
Well, look, I think, first off, I'll start with the
first part of it. I think it's going to be
tough to get all three of them done with long
term extensions.

Speaker 3 (20:45):
So I guess, okay, real quick, real quick, Why do
you say that?

Speaker 9 (20:48):
When we look at Philly and Burrow's even said this,
they figure out how to make it work, So why
can't Since Nat.

Speaker 8 (20:54):
Can make it work? The question becomes do you do
you want to make it work? And the reason I'm saying,
of course those are good players, but what does that
do to the rest of your roster. Are they any
damn good at all in defense? And you know Hendrickson
is good as you get Pete.

Speaker 9 (21:09):
No, but we're talking about the Super Bowl champs literally
just did this with multiple players. They have six players
who are making twenty million or more year on their salary.

Speaker 8 (21:17):
Yeah, and then they supplement it by going to get
a guy like Zack Bond and paying them on one
year deal and he becomes a big part of their defense.
And now he goes. Now they got to either pay
him or he leaves. I get it, you can do it, Brady.
That's not That's not what I'm saying. What I'm saying
is if you why not, you could tag Higgins and
maybe get a market for him out there and trade
them and get some assets. And then if you want

(21:39):
to keep Hendrickson and you want to pay Chase, okay,
would I try and keep all of them? Absolutely? But
if you if the money gets too crazy and you can't,
then I think you have to prior toys where you
want to go with it. And you know, if you
take Hendrickson off that defense, what are they are they
any good? They're they're horrible? Yeah, go with him, Well,

(22:01):
then now they're gonna be even worse, and that puts
even more pressure on Joe Burrow in that offense. So yeah,
I think ideally they tag Higgins, get a deal done
with Chase, extend Hendrickson, because you know Hendrickson isn't a
kid anymore. Either extend him and then and then come
back to to Higgins and see if can get something done,
and if you can't, then you peddle get some something

(22:23):
back for him.

Speaker 9 (22:23):
But what about the second part of the question, though,
do you think it would get to him not going anywhere?

Speaker 8 (22:28):
He's one of the top, he's one of the top
four quarter he's one of the guys. He's an it guy.
You don't get rid. You don't let that go out
the door. So no, I don't think so.

Speaker 3 (22:36):
You wouldn't have said that about Palmer. During his time
with the Bengals.

Speaker 8 (22:40):
Well, he also suffered a major knee injury at one point.

Speaker 9 (22:43):
Remember Burroughs had Burrows had significant injuries like's let's.

Speaker 6 (22:48):
Not go there, that's true major he hasn't since.

Speaker 8 (22:51):
He's been there.

Speaker 9 (22:52):
He had a very unique like wrist injury, elbow wrist
like that. Again, it seemed like it took a little
while to work itself out this year.

Speaker 8 (23:00):
Yeah, but he worked it out himself out, alrighty three
he hit it on the MVP type season.

Speaker 3 (23:04):
But Pete, don't get distracted by it.

Speaker 9 (23:06):
You act like this franchise has ever built ever around
any quarterbank.

Speaker 8 (23:10):
Pete, Well, I mean they built around Boomer back in
the day.

Speaker 9 (23:16):
If you would he say that, if you asked him
when he say that, because I've've heard him talk otherwise
on that, and that's why he it was Palmer's gone.

Speaker 3 (23:23):
That's why he said maybe Burrow one day would be.

Speaker 8 (23:26):
But I think the old reputation of the Bengals is
a little misguided now used to be. Don't get me wrong.
I'm not going to sit here and defend what they
used to.

Speaker 9 (23:33):
So this isn't just because you're really close with a
couple of people in the front office.

Speaker 3 (23:36):
They're like, is this sounds like there's a little bias
in your He's pretty close to a couple of people.

Speaker 6 (23:41):
I know.

Speaker 9 (23:42):
I won't say, I won't say, name's Pete, but you
and I both know you're You're you're friendly, You're friendly
with a few guys.

Speaker 3 (23:48):
Sounds like you're friendly, Pete.

Speaker 8 (23:49):
I'm not. I'm not friendly I know some of them,
but the reality I don't think they're as cheap as
everybody portrays in the bags.

Speaker 3 (23:56):
Well what are tell us what they are?

Speaker 4 (23:57):
Pete.

Speaker 8 (23:58):
The question becomes, you want to keep T Higgins in
lieua going get help in other positions? That's that's basically
what it comes down to. Would you Yes?

Speaker 3 (24:08):
I would. I would keep T Higgins too.

Speaker 8 (24:11):
I keep him too, but but if he gets irrational,
then then I'm not keeping him at Trade him somewhere,
get some him.

Speaker 5 (24:17):
But that's the tag, right doesn't the tag remove the
irrational approach to what it is you have going on?
It's like you're getting.

Speaker 8 (24:23):
Ah, you can negotiate a deal with them, That's.

Speaker 3 (24:26):
What I'm saying.

Speaker 5 (24:26):
You get a non exclusive tag that says we you're
giving them the opportunity to see what his value is
on the open market. So if you come back and
we got to have a conversation about your your contract,
then you understand that the market has spoken and that
we're most likely your best option. Right and now how
it would play out? Or you just stay on that
non exclusive tag.

Speaker 8 (24:47):
Right, or you just tag them and then trade. I
mean you could do that too. I think letting him
leave the free agency would be the worst thing they
could do. Uh.

Speaker 2 (24:56):
Pe Prisco joining us here on the Herd on Fox
Sports Radio. Who's the worst run organization in the NFL?

Speaker 3 (25:05):
Oh, good question, Jacksonville, what.

Speaker 4 (25:14):
Pete?

Speaker 3 (25:14):
Answer the question?

Speaker 8 (25:15):
Get me wrong, don't get me wrong.

Speaker 3 (25:16):
Answer the question.

Speaker 8 (25:18):
When Trent Balke was in there running things, they were
the worst run I would answer that question by.

Speaker 3 (25:23):
One under that Carolina.

Speaker 8 (25:25):
I mean that's a Jacksonville, Carolina j When Trent Balke
was running the Jacksonville Jaguars, they were the worst run
organization in the in the league. I would agree. I
would agree with that. You know, the owner gives that
proposition a lot of power, and that power he brought
into you know, urban Meyer. I mean, come on, he
brought in urban Meyer. Look what happened with that? That
was a master and so and so situation. It's the

(25:49):
worst run. Yeah, for that time being, was the worst
run organization. So yes, to answer that question, yes, what.

Speaker 4 (25:55):
About right now?

Speaker 7 (25:56):
Right now?

Speaker 3 (25:56):
Who's got it? Now?

Speaker 8 (25:59):
Well, let's see who they are as a general manager.

Speaker 7 (26:00):
Then I'll get back.

Speaker 3 (26:03):
But they're down to five, right, They're down to five.
They get there, they are.

Speaker 8 (26:06):
Down to five but look, Tony Boselli, who I know
well and Brady knows him as well.

Speaker 3 (26:10):
There we go again, Here we go.

Speaker 8 (26:12):
They hired him in an executive VP, and he's going
to fix the organization. He's gonna They're going to hire
the right yeam fix it. And it all depends on
who Liam how Liam Cone is as head coach, and
I think from what I hear, he's going to be
pretty good.

Speaker 3 (26:26):
But okay, okay.

Speaker 6 (26:31):
T.

Speaker 8 (26:33):
It's just football, by the way. It's not that complicated.
It really isn't. It's it's look, you know, Tony Ball.
I worked with him on radio for all those years
and and had to teach him part of the game.
Him down here, and now he's back and running the Jets.
I had to teach him part of the game. Brady
Quinn all over the TV, everywhere I work with him
down here, I had to teach him part of that.

(26:55):
It's not that complicated.

Speaker 3 (26:56):
It's just Himball.

Speaker 7 (26:59):
I love.

Speaker 3 (27:01):
Way to go out guns blazing. Everyone left you, Pete,
Now you're the one there. Everybody left. Well done, Pete.

Speaker 8 (27:09):
You know what, don't bring somebody else in to work
with me, and I'll teach him A singer to you
every Sunday to.

Speaker 3 (27:16):
Get some good chicken cutlets or something.

Speaker 2 (27:19):
Pete Prisco, you can get him on ex at Prisco
CBS and if you come for him, he does like
the smoke, so he will respond on social media.

Speaker 4 (27:27):
Thanks Pete.

Speaker 2 (27:28):
We appreciate it all right, guys there Pete Prisco, senior
NFL columnsts from CBS Sports, CBS Sports h Q analyst. Uh.

Speaker 9 (27:37):
By the way, with the exception of a couple of
as have been in the bottom half of the league,
it's cash spending and especially if you take out Burrows money.

Speaker 3 (27:46):
So there you go.

Speaker 2 (27:47):
Yeah, I love Pete, man. You can tell he always
he always manages uh an opportunity to get a few
digs in. You know, he's got to take his shots.

Speaker 3 (27:58):
Man.

Speaker 2 (27:59):
There's just much respect, just mutual respect, you know. Okay, Yeah,
that's cool. You know, just a couple of couple of one.

Speaker 3 (28:06):
Of those office guys he's close with. Yeah, I got two,
that's my guy.

Speaker 4 (28:10):

What Up. Welcome in This is the hurt. Wherever you
may be, however you may be making this part of
your day. Thanks so much. I'm Doug Gottlieb in for
Colin Cowhard and for the next couple of hours, I
want to talk sports with you. From La Costa Canyon
to Escondito. It's actually not far from each other. It

(29:33):
probably wasn't the best from O time Mesa to San Clemente.

Speaker 12 (29:41):
That was better, from Baha to the Canadian Rockies, From.

Speaker 7 (29:45):
BA to the Canadian Rockies the last fifteen minutes. In sports,
you have to know to know, and if you're a SoCal,
long standing sports radio listener, you know exactly who I'm
talking about. And that is a for the gap that's
not making fun in any sort of way. Hey, welcome in.
I hope you're having a great day. Jace. Do you
give me the weather update in sunny southern California?

Speaker 12 (30:08):
Weather on the ones, Weather on the Ones today, mid
seventies and sunny, not a cloud in the sky. Dog
in southern California. Back to you for traffic on the TUESDA.

Speaker 7 (30:18):
Uh Okay, So Ryan, do you want to do you
want to guess? You want to guess what we're working
with here in Green Bay is I'm I'm looking out
at at actual at the bay. My dog loves it outside,
no matter how cold it is outside. Do you want Ryan,
do you want to take any sort of guess of
what it is right now? Ah, seventeen degrees Okay, it

(30:40):
is sunny and twenty five degrees. Sonny in twenty five
feels like twenty one. I'm told last night he was
in the last night was the negatives. We're out of
the negatives for a while. But it's a it's a
dry twenty five. That's the good thing, right to dry heat,
try heat. I bring it up up because we're two

(31:02):
months away from the NFL Draft being in Green Bay,
and we had no snow in November and December and
just dustings in January, and then we haven't gotten dumped.
We had like back to back, so there's probably about
eight inches ten inches of snow on the ground, but
no one has any idea. But in April it could

(31:23):
be seventy five, it could be forty five. We had
no idea. But it's gonna be fun to have everybody
in town for the NFL Draft. Let's get to what
we saw last night on the basketball floor. Really, the
only thing going of note was the Lakers taking on
the Charlotte Hornets last night at at Crypto, and the

(31:44):
Lakers lose after having a big lead, and there's like,
you can make lots of we can do the whole
blame pie that they used to do on Undisputed. We
can make it out all to be Lebron's fault because
he missed two shots in the last five seconds with
the chance to send it to overtime. But we'd also

(32:05):
would be being unfair to Lebron because well, without Lebron
they wouldn't have had that lead. He was the one
Laker who really had it going. Of course, Austin Reeves
got thrown out of the game for what he's for, uh,
for a verbal attack, not an official right. So then
you end up having the Hornets win after the Horns
come storming back outscore the Lakers thirty two eighteen the

(32:27):
third quarter, a twenty twenty two to one run, and
the Lakers just did not come out of the locker room. Well,
but I ye, look, if your if you're honest and
you're and you're being fair. As much as I don't
agree with the trade, I don't, but I also there's

(32:50):
lots of things I don't know about, and neither do you,
because on the outside, you're like, man, Luca is a
generational talent. He's in any conversation of currently the best
player in the league when he's healthy. He just took
the Mavericks to the NBA Finals and it felt like

(33:11):
they were building the thing around him. Now, the three
hundred and fifty million dollars, four year contract extension that
was out there for him, that's a real thing. And again,
if you're running a business, you're like, who's your best employee, Well,
it's this guy, But he's always late. You know, there's
just a limit. It feels like it's gonna get worse
with age. If you look at Luca and you're honest

(33:37):
with yourself, you're like, he's not the picture of fitness.
He doesn't play defense. It's kind of amazing he's able
to be this good despite the things he doesn't do.
And if you're gonna give a guy a four year,
three hundred and fifty million dollar contract, like, once you
give him that contract, that's kind of on you because
that's fully guaranteed. Like you can get mad and stop

(33:58):
your feet as much as you want, but you still
have to pay them. Whether you play or you don't play.
And if you think that is unique, just to this. No, no, no, no.
We say this on my show. So my show is
the Doug Gottlieb Show. It runs after this one on
most Fox Sports, Trailier Radio Phillis, and the iHeartRadio app.
And we say this all the time about the collective

(34:22):
bard and agreement in the NFL. You know, you get
players who are complaining about how many games they're playing. Hey,
shouldn't have agreed to the contract. You know, you get
owners that don't like some of the deals with you know,
the amount of time they're practicing. Should agree to the contract.
Players don't like the franchise tag should agree to the contract.

(34:45):
Franchise tag is a collectively bargained agreement anyway. It's a
contract that a high enough percentage of the players, the
majority of the players agreed to, so it lives. And
if you don't like it, well, then this is not
the business for you, because that's something that collect actively,
they've collectively bargained upon for a decade long contract. And

(35:06):
the point is that the hornet of the Horns, the Mavericks.
You could be as critical as you want of the trade,
and my critique would be. If you're going to trade
away a guy and not take him to market, you
have to get such an incredible value. So we're on
in southern California, so people in LA know this to

(35:28):
be true. And I know the real estate market right
now is a little bit flat, right. Interest rates are high,
although they've dropped some, Okay, the the but the housing
market is the perfect parallel because and if you live
in a market where this isn't the case, I'm sorry
you may have to catch up because it's a little
bit different. I sold three houses in Newport Beach when

(35:49):
I lived there. Okay, all three of them we sold
off market. The house was never listed, was never listed,
Well how I just tell the house like it was
like somebody just hey, man, you want to I'll give
you a fifteen million dollars your house, Like that's not
how it works. But realtors do knock on your door.

(36:11):
They do slide newspapers and paper into your of the
Hey I got a buyer is look it. And I
have a tremendous realtor in in Newport. I'll give a
shout out my man, John Deshaun. And they know everybody
coming in coming out everybody, and so all you got
to do is go like, hey, we're we'd actually think

(36:31):
about listing this thing. And then you talk about what
do you think it's worth, and like you know what,
I might have a client for you. And so again
there's three different homes. One people. One couple walks in.
I want it how much done? So you don't have
to list it. You don't have to have an opening,
open house, you don't have to have a real or

(36:53):
open house. You don't have to take all the pictures,
you don't have to do all the things. Okay, sometimes
you don't have to do an inspection. People walk in
there like I want it as is. Here's the check.
I don't know where people have this kind of money,
but it does happen. Happens, but there is one caveat
to it. And this is just a belief I have.

(37:15):
I think most people would share. That belief is if
you're gonna buy something off market and I'm not gonna
get into a bidding war, especially in a buy in
a seller's market, well then you're gonna have to pay
maybe not above asking, but it's gonna the asking has
to be a little bit higher than one would expect

(37:38):
you know, like if it's an eight hundred thousand dollars
house and you're like, well, what do you listening for? Like,
I don't know, We'll take a twenty five for it,
Like this is not You're not really have room to
haggle because if you want to hang away, listen, if
you don't want to pay that price, that's fine. We'll
just take it to market and maybe you can get
it for seven fifty or seven twenty five, or maybe

(38:00):
it gets bid up and yet pay nine hundred for it.
So to me, the biggest mistake is that if you're
gonna have a commodity like Luca, then everyone concludes is
would I mean, it's the best player that could ever
could possibly be traded at twenty five years old, you know,

(38:21):
in an expiring contract, Like that's a pretty good deal.
And now, by the way, he can't get that Supermax deal,
So you're gonna save some some money to the new
team as well. You gotta get a little bit more
than they got. You just have to figure out a
way to get more. And if you if the Lakers
didn't want to get more, like all right, Rob, listen,
I know we got a great relationship. But I'm gonna
have to take this to market. And when I take
it to market, I don't I don't know if just

(38:45):
Anthony Davis and a couple of other pieces, if that doesn't.
But the other side to it is if you if
you're honest with yourself, and so many, so few people
actually are honest with themselves, and you go, Okay, why
do you make the trade? Well, because he's not really
in shape, he doesn't really play defense, and he consistently

(39:09):
gets himself out of shape in the offseason, and the
defense is never really picked up. And yet we get
to the NBA Finals. So if anything, it kind of
it gives him, it empowers him, like, hey, I didn't
play much defense last year. We made the NBA Finals.
Why are you yelling at me about it? If you
watched last night? Okay, And I get he's still coming

(39:30):
off injury. It's on a new team. He's playing off
the ball more. Whereas everything, everything, everything, everything was him
with a ball screen in Dallas, which, by the way,
the Lakers really want to remake themselves. They're worrying so
much about finding a rim protector. You got to figure
out a way to create ball screen opportunities for Luca.
He's amazing at it. But if you watched last night,

(39:53):
you would say like he's in very good shape and
many he didn't play any defense. And somewhere Nico Harrison's
sitting there going, what's the what's the meme with? Oh man?

Speaker 12 (40:10):
The meme with that guy that what's his face?

Speaker 3 (40:12):
That meme?

Speaker 12 (40:13):
Come on, dude, We'll give me some clues here, give
me some hold on.

Speaker 7 (40:18):
Uh uh now I'm now, I'm really having it, having
a tough day. Okay, who what's the meme? He? Uh?
Famous actor date swimming much younger than him, George, No,
he's married. We DiCaprio on his couch with a beer,

(40:39):
pointing out the screen right doing the you know, looking
at the screen.

Speaker 3 (40:45):
From once upon his time in Hollywood.

Speaker 7 (40:46):
Yep, yes, yes that one. What is that? What does
that meme called? What would you how would you describe
that meme? When you want to search for that meme?
What do you discribe?

Speaker 12 (40:59):
How would Leo DiCaprio pointing at TV.

Speaker 7 (41:03):
I don't know, Yes, that's Nico last night, see that
dad right there? That's the one. And then you know
Lebron misses two shots at the end. And we're supposed
to argue about, like sports radio is supposed to be,
who's gonna take the game when he shot? Is it Lebron?

(41:24):
Is it Luca? And I just think those things organically
take care of themselves, Like Lebron had to go in
last night, he takes them. Eventually, it's gonna be Luca's team.
But you gotta allow Lebron kind of like his space.
It's his deal, like undo his deal. And then once
we get to the playoffs, we know who's gonna have
the ball.

Speaker 12 (41:41):
But Doug, it's sports talk. So you doing the case
by case thing that's somewhere in the middle. That's far
too rational for sports talk. So how about we narrow
this down game seven of a payoff series? Who do
you want coach taking that shot?

Speaker 7 (41:59):
Like it all depends?

Speaker 12 (42:00):
Yeah, it depends. That's that doesn't work. There's no more
depends you have to do.

Speaker 7 (42:03):
There is though, that Like that's where sports talk. Sports
talk is the the the polarizing either you know either
your because this is why how sports talk works. If
I don't think Lebron James is the greatest player of
all time, I'm a hater and I've somehow said he sucks.
Whereas you know, there's four hundred and fifty NBA players

(42:25):
right now, there's eight billion people on the planet. They're
the best of the best, the best. And again, the
NBA has existed for about one hundred years, but really
were only paying attention in the past forty years. And
if I say he's the second or third best, that's
not saying he sucks. That's saying I prefer Jordan. Honestly,
in a game, I would have preferred Bird in his prime,
probably Magic in his prime to Lebron. But Lebron's great

(42:48):
and his ability to longevity, he's amazing, He's awesome. I
just like those guys in the short instance better. Again,
I know that doesn't work for I guess that doesn't
work for some people's sports radio. What would I do?
I would this year? Again, it depends who's are they
double teaming Lebron, they double teaming Luca, who's open, who's

(43:10):
playing well? I probably end up like again, if all
things being equal, it would probably be Luca.

Speaker 12 (43:20):
That's a that's a good exercise. So they're both having
a great game, they both have similar stats, and at
the end, you're just like, I want Luca so that's
the way to put it. I like that, So I'm
gonna hold you to that.

Speaker 7 (43:31):
Yeah, because he's done it at the end of playoff
games more recently than Lebron has done it. Lebron has
done it more often for more years in the playoffs.
But it stands the reason that Luca, at twenty five
years old, having just taken a team to the NBA
Finals last year, he's done it more recently and he

(43:51):
will be younger. And although he's not in shape now,
if we were to get that deep into the NBA playoffs,
he would be in the best shape of the year.
And I would and they both I mean, look, the
thing about both of them is both the incredible passers.
So if you throw a second guy at him, they
will find the open guy. But I would say Luca
would be my guy.

Speaker 12 (44:10):
And it depends on the shot too, right, Like last
night they needed a three. I mean, if Lebron could
get you two easier than a three, right, Luca is
the better perimeter shooter.

Speaker 7 (44:22):
Uh yeah, yeah, I mean, like, look, Lebron had two
really good looks. Those are two really good looks. He
left him short, but those are two good looks. And
at the time, he was I think four of nine
from three. So whoever gets those looks that's on the
floor at the end, Dorian Finney Smith or Gabe Vincent
or if Ruey had two wide open looks, Ruey shot

(44:43):
the ball poorly last night, Like those are good looks,
a little deep. But yeah, of course it depends upon
the selection of the shot, where it comes to the
shot clock, who it's against, how you're playing, all these things.
We make these we make this stuff up. Like, you know,
it's like when the Ravens, when the Ravens lost in

(45:05):
the playoffs, you know, people critical of the play calling.
Should they have given it to Derrick Henry more often?
Like yeah, but then when he turned the football over
and he get behind and they're stack in the box?
Is that the is that the best way? Is that
the best way? So Lakers lose all of the flaws
with with Luca and some with Lebron on display. If

(45:29):
we're fair about it, he's Luca was still a plus
thirteen despite the fact that he was like Lebron, his
stats were way better. Was a minus four, Luca a
plus thirteen. He ends up with fourteen eleven and eight assists.
Did have six turnovers, was five to eighteen from the
floor and struggled to guard as Lamello late in the game.

(45:52):
Will let him up. But if you watch that game
and you're fair about it, again, I wouldn't have traded
Lukadancik no chance. But if you're fair about it, you go.

Speaker 6 (46:08):
He do.

Speaker 7 (46:08):
Look at he's in shape and he ain't got anybody.

Speaker 10 (46:11):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays

Ryan back at the studios two on the ones and twos,
and of course you Fox Sports Radio Nation, thanks again
for hanging out with us. Let's get involved, let's get
it going. We are on site in Jersey because well
we did an event yesterday, believe it or not with
Dallas Goddard, which, by the way, post is a very

(48:12):
interesting question. What happens when you start to become friendly
with guys that are not on the team you root for.

Speaker 4 (48:20):
I think there's a real simple answer to that, to
be honest.

Speaker 11 (48:22):
Yeah, so Dallas Gonnard, super Bowl champion of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Speaker 4 (48:27):
We had to do an event with him yesterday.

Speaker 11 (48:29):
And he's such a great dude, nice guy, reel down
to earth, super pumped about his win. Makes you pump
for him? The answer is simple. I think you start
to like players but still root for your team.

Speaker 4 (48:46):
I think that's okay. You could still root for your team.

Speaker 11 (48:48):
Rich is a lifelong forty nine Ers fan, but you
root for that player as a man, as an individual.

Speaker 4 (48:53):
It's like when your favorite player leaves the team.

Speaker 11 (48:55):
You don't abandon your favorite player. You still root for
him a little bit, keep your eye on him. You
keep your alliance and your allegiance to the team you
root for. So it's really that like getting to know him.
We've had him on our show a few times. We're
gonna get him on again. We spent a whole day
with him yesterday. We met his girlfriend, right We talked
about life and the vig three and what it's like
to be in the locker room.

Speaker 4 (49:16):
You get to know the guy and.

Speaker 11 (49:17):
You realize he's a down to earth, strapping young fella.
You just get to root for him and appreciate him,
and you keep your eye on him. As simple as that,
you know what, simple move on. But I think back
to when I was a little boy and as a
Niners fan. When Montana left for the Chiefs, I didn't
become a Chiefs fan, but there was a part of

(49:38):
me that's like, unless they play the Niners, I'm certainly
gonna hope cool Joe does well.

Speaker 4 (49:43):
Exactly.

Speaker 11 (49:44):
Yeah, It's like, yeah, so now we're rooting for him
and he'll be on the show more and more often.
Again Coveno and Rich we're normally on from five to
seven on the East Monday through Friday, two to four
on the West. Just search Coveno and Rich at Covino
and Rich on social media or call us now eight
seven seven for the Herd.

Speaker 4 (50:01):
It's a pleasure to be here again.

Speaker 11 (50:02):
That's what brought us to the East coast. We live
in Los Angeles. But they said, hey, we need you
to do some event with Dallas Gonner. Would you like
to do it. We said yes, So since we were
on the East, we said, let's go back to Jersey,
say hi to the fam, stuff our faces with Taylor
Ham and pizza, and let's rock the herd today. Let

(50:23):
me tell you it's it's very interesting because I feel
like of all the shows on Fox Sports Radio, and
I'm not patting ourselves on the back because it's such
a stupid story, but I feel like we were the
league leaders in joking about the Yankees' lay mass facial
hair policy, like we would often bring up young Dominican players,

(50:44):
young Latino players, you know around the league, any young
player for that matter, who wants to clean shave.

Speaker 13 (50:50):
In twenty twenty five, it's a lame ass look. Very
few guys clean shave.

Speaker 4 (50:56):
I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw it this morning.

Speaker 11 (50:58):
We got so many messages because again we're the bozos
that bring it up often. But let me read the
press release from your dude, a guy that now runs
your Los Yankees.

Speaker 4 (51:10):
He's my dude.

Speaker 11 (51:10):
Today hal Steinbrenner put a statement out, my family, all
my friends.

Speaker 4 (51:16):
So many people.

Speaker 7 (51:16):
I woke up.

Speaker 4 (51:17):
I was like, what now am I dreaming? It really
felt like, no way, this can't be real.

Speaker 11 (51:23):
Statement from Yankees managing general partner Hal Steinbrenner. The memo
is regarding alterations of Yankee facial hair policy.

Speaker 7 (51:36):
What.

Speaker 13 (51:37):
In recent weeks, I've spoken to a large number of
former and current Yankees, spanning several eras to elicit their
perspectives on our long standing facial hair and grooming policy.

Speaker 4 (51:49):
The fact this is even a memo it's hilarious.

Speaker 13 (51:51):
To me, and I appreciate their earned and varied feedback.
These most recent conversations are an extension of ongoing internal
dialogue that dates back several years. Ultimately, the final decision
rest with me, and after great consideration, as a Steinbrenner,
we will be amending our expectations to allow our players

(52:13):
and uniform personnel to have well groomed beards moving forward.
It is the appropriate time to move beyond the familiar
comforts of our former policy.

Speaker 11 (52:24):
It is and what we said when they got Devin
Williams's I think change starts with one man, and I
believe that he was the catalyst and that one man
because you invest what eight point something million dollars a
year for this guy to be the closer of your
team and intimidation role. Really, you're closing the game, you're

(52:45):
the closer of the New York Yankees, and you have
this this really intimidating, dominating beard that gives you this
sense of confidence and makes you feel like a badass,
and then you're forced to shave it. Now you look
like a baby.

Speaker 4 (52:57):
Cherub on the mound and pinstripes away.

Speaker 11 (53:00):
Then intimidation factor. And Devin Williams is very outspoken. He
wasn't disrespectful, but he was very outspoken on the fact
that he hadn't shaved in years and that he felt
very comfortable with his beard and more confident with his beard.
So essentially, you're telling them to shave, taking away their confidence.
That then becomes a counterproductive thing. And you know, we

(53:21):
mentioned our time with Dallas Goddard yesterday Philadelphia Eagle. Coincidentally,
I said to him, just in random conversation, I said, hey, Dallas,
he had a regular scruff going on, right, a regular.

Speaker 4 (53:33):
Twenty twenty five scruff with some facial hair.

Speaker 11 (53:37):
I'm like, if the Eagles had a policy and they
said you had a shave, how would you feel about it?
How would the guys react? He's like, oh, man, that
would be terrible. He's like, nah, you would find eventually,
you'd find somewhere else to play, because that's just you know,
you got to think about the offseason and just out
and about and just how you feel about yourself. He's
like the young guys today, no way, man, I don't

(53:57):
like that. That was his take on it. You hear
how young people's young people talk about, you know, how
they want to look when they're out there. It's about time.
And again, I'm a Yankees fan, so I believe in tradition.
But as we've said many times, sometimes tradition is making
the same mistake over and over again. And hal Steinberner

(54:18):
said it right now is the time. It's the perfect time.
And the rule is well groom beards, meaning you can't
show up to work because it's work. You know, you
got to show up like a professional. You can't show
up to work looking like hobo Williams. You can't look
like a hobo, can't look like a member of the
four Red Sox exactly.

Speaker 4 (54:36):
Which I always thought it was a crappy look. But work,
let me.

Speaker 13 (54:40):
Tell you, it's it's interesting. And I think twenty twenty
five is the right timing. You know, forget it's a Yankees.
A lot of these young players have more deals than
ever with brands on social media, TikTok, Instagram x, they're doing,
they're pimping more products than ever before. It's a different time,
and I think it was the right move by Steinbrenner,

(55:03):
and you and I were breakfast getting some tailor ham
Like you said out here in New.

Speaker 4 (55:07):
Jersey, it's not pork and that argument needs to end now.

Speaker 13 (55:11):
I know people in Texas or LA or Chicago, bigger
cities around the country are like, who cares about the Yankees'
facial hair? It's an ongoing joke that these dudes had
to look like they were showing up in an accounting
office shaving every day. But to the point now where
you look back and say, how many Yankees would have
looked different? And now, are we guaranteed to get a

(55:31):
bearded Aaron Judge this year?

Speaker 11 (55:34):
A down because in the off season, Yeah, that's how
most of these young dudes are rocking it. In fact,
if you look at us right now, we got a
well groomed scruff going on.

Speaker 4 (55:43):
It's just the way of the world.

Speaker 11 (55:45):
You're going to force these young dudes throughck a cornball
mustache like your dad had.

Speaker 4 (55:49):
Get out of here.

Speaker 11 (55:49):
I mean, not to backtrack a week but less Friday,
we filled in for Colin and Big Sexy Ryan and
Danny G.

Speaker 13 (55:59):
I believe I asked both of you. This came up
literally a week ago because I said, yo, guys, when
was the last time you shaved your face? And you
guys said years and years?

Speaker 4 (56:08):
Am I right?

Speaker 3 (56:09):
You are correct sir?

Speaker 7 (56:11):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (56:11):
For me, Danny G, it's been since high school, my
senior year.

Speaker 7 (56:15):
Yeah.

Speaker 13 (56:15):
So when you hear this policy, it is funny how
we probably have talked about this stupid policy more than
any other show, so we could put it to rest.
But it was crazy to wake up this morning and
your phone is lit up, like, oh my god. I
hope nothing bad happened. But we are synonymous with this
stupid story. So I'm glad we got to fill in
for Colin today.

Speaker 11 (56:32):
But it is a bigger deal because so many people
laughed at the Yankees because of that. If you're not
a Yankees fan, you still looked at it like, yo, man,
that's the most outdated policy possible.

Speaker 4 (56:43):
You and your stupid Yankee rules are so dumb.

Speaker 11 (56:46):
You know if I was a young player, I wouldn't
want to play there, and as a result, I think
it became an uncool place to play, Like what clean
shaving in today's world, Like, I'd rather play for another team.
Other teams are willing to pay you nowadays. So yeah,
if there's another team willing to pay you, and they're
a contender and they're gonna let you grow your facial
hair and be who you want to be and be

(57:06):
as flashy as you want to be, and you could
be comfortable in your own skin, why wouldn't you choose
that team? Yankees were gonna lose talent as a result
of this stupid rule that they held on too, And
I say stupid from today's standard. Yeah, I understood it
years ago, Like, hey, you show up to work as
a professional.

Speaker 4 (57:23):
I get it.

Speaker 11 (57:24):
So I do like the compromise, and I hate to
be that guy. There's so many sports guys especially that
were like I've been saying it. I've always told you
I was the guy.

Speaker 4 (57:35):
I don't know.

Speaker 11 (57:35):
I don't want to be that guy. I don't want
to be that guy. But I did say that it
starts with one man. That man would be Devin Williams
and that it should be a compromise. And that's exactly
what you got. They're allowed to have a well groomed beard,
so they're not coming in looking like h like yeah,

(57:56):
like Kevin Malar or Johnny Damon or old Man Winter. Right,
you gotta have a well groomed beard. And I think
it's a big, big move moving forward. I bet you
it's a celebration in the locker room.

Speaker 13 (58:08):
And then it poses a lot of times it's a
little victory, right because you're no one looking like Justin Turner.
But look at this in Vegas, the Yankees over underwent
from ninety two to ninety four wins.

Speaker 4 (58:18):
Look at that, people are predicting the beards. Give him
two more wins.

Speaker 3 (58:22):
Yeah.

Speaker 13 (58:22):
But interestingly enough, are we going to see every single
Yankee rocking some type of stubble or facial air?

Speaker 4 (58:29):
That's the John Carlow. Yes, I think you're gonna see.

Speaker 13 (58:33):
Think of Garrett Cole when he was an astro, not
a Yankee. Garrett Cole had long hair and a beard.

Speaker 4 (58:36):
Garrett Cole here, I'm already starting a starting growing my
official hair again.

Speaker 7 (58:41):
Garrett Cole.

Speaker 4 (58:42):
I guarantee that goober Aaron Judge taking.

Speaker 7 (58:44):
It back to Houston roots Eric grow a little bit
of a mullet too. I'm not sure.

Speaker 13 (58:48):
Aaron Judge definitely gonna be having a beard on opening day.
And it was Verdugo, former Yankee who's a free agent still,
I believe, said yeah, I just want to go play
for a team where I could wear my jewelry, grow
my beard and be me. So maybe there was a
catalyst there too, where they're like, listen, he didn't work
out for us. But you know when companies you work for,

(59:09):
when you leave or they fire you or you quit, they're.

Speaker 7 (59:12):
Like, can you take an exit survey?

Speaker 13 (59:13):
And you're like, yeah, no thanks, but they want you
to take an exit survey on the way out, like
what did you look about our company?

Speaker 4 (59:19):
What didn't you?

Speaker 13 (59:20):
They got a public exit survey from Ford Goo, and
his exit survey was I played for the franchise with
the most history in midjor League Baseball, and I hated it.

Speaker 11 (59:29):
Well, any place that you work take it to a
real life situation for everybody listening, where.

Speaker 4 (59:35):
They won't let you be you and you can't do you.

Speaker 11 (59:38):
There's a lot of places that hire you right because
they like you then when you.

Speaker 4 (59:43):
Get there, they change you to do it their way.

Speaker 11 (59:46):
So now you're out of your comfort zone and you
can't be one hundred percent your best in a weird
way that matters and translates into baseball.

Speaker 4 (59:56):
You're probably thinking big deals facial hair.

Speaker 7 (59:58):
You know.

Speaker 11 (59:59):
Imagine if they forced you to wear a stupid haircut
or a certain type of facial hair at your profession. Again,
I think it would take you out of your game.
You would feel weird about it. Like this isn't mean
we don't.

Speaker 13 (01:00:11):
Need to harp on this, like Bryce Harper, who, by
the way, would look weird without facial hair exactly. I
don't want to harp on this, but Danny g just
one quick more question for the room.

Speaker 4 (01:00:22):
I've never seen you not wear a hat. What a
Fox Sports was like?

Speaker 7 (01:00:26):
Oh yes, Daniel, Danny, we you can't wear.

Speaker 4 (01:00:30):
A hat anymore. That would aggrevate you.

Speaker 3 (01:00:33):
I have some stylish do rags at home.

Speaker 4 (01:00:35):
No, no dew rags as well, Danny. You just have
to show your head.

Speaker 11 (01:00:39):
We call them don't rags here at the offense respectfully.

Speaker 12 (01:00:43):
Then I would shave my dome and get a tattoo
on the top of my bald hat.

Speaker 11 (01:00:47):
Ryan, let me ask you, big sexy Ryan, So you
got a cool ass, like, you know, grizzly beard. Imagine
like Ryan, you Ryan would go from looking like James
Harden to James Soften.

Speaker 4 (01:00:58):
Yeah, he would. And it's a confidence killer that it is.

Speaker 11 (01:01:03):
You look cool with your beard. And I know some
guys like, really, who cares about a beard?

Speaker 13 (01:01:08):
I bet your confidence and how good you feel about
yourself comes with your appearance and it's on your face.
So there's a lot of guys that are like, yeah,
I would look like a baby little boy clean shaven.
So think about that.

Speaker 4 (01:01:19):
Think about that, and also think about this.

Speaker 11 (01:01:21):
There will be people that still show up clean shaven,
and that's going to be interesting because you're like, that's
the guy who And then when you read how Steinbrenner said,
he said he got varied opinions.

Speaker 4 (01:01:34):
So there were people that were like, no, I think
we should stick with the tradition. How right.

Speaker 11 (01:01:39):
There were people that were probably on the side of
keeping things the way they were, And oh, you know,
George would be rolling over in his grave right now
if you I think George would be happy about this.
Does have to evolve, As we say all the time,
and we quote our pal Gary Vaynerchuk innovate or die,
and it was becoming a very very dated rule. It

(01:02:01):
made a team that I root for feel little corny
after a while. And I think it is a bigger
day than people realize.

Speaker 13 (01:02:10):
You know, I'm just I'm looking at some of our feedback.
Our boss hit us up with a link.

Speaker 11 (01:02:14):
Someone has already done images of Yankees with different hairstyles
and beards. That's another thing, rich, Like, how do you
think the people feel like who had to live by
these policies? Like a Glaber Torres right, who his whole
career with Yankees had to show up like a little
baby boy and now you know he's a tiger. He's
already got the facial hair going on, but he's like,

(01:02:36):
oh so now they lift it.

Speaker 4 (01:02:38):
You know, it's like he just missed the cuddle.

Speaker 13 (01:02:39):
Think of any social issue right where where you grew
up and they didn't allow something and now they do.
Like for all we know, Don Mattically and Rod Gidgery
are really pissed, like yeah, they're like he had a
lightning's like I could have had a beard.

Speaker 11 (01:02:52):
Exactly like all the players from Yesteryear. But look if
you're a non Yankees fan. I get it you don't
care that much, but this is a big deal. Change
is a good thing and for the first time, you're
gonna see Yankee showing up, you know, with a well
groomed beard, not just a goofy mustache. Your thoughts, that's

(01:03:12):
our take on it. And again, I hate to be
the show that said we told you, but we did
say a compromise was inevitable, inevitable and coming soon, and
today was the day.

Speaker 13 (01:03:23):
Well, hey, your thoughts at eight seven seven for the
Herd if you want to chime in most interactive show
on Fox Sports Radio at Covino and Rich. I actually
made Covino give me his initial reaction this morning before
he went on the air, and he was actually pretty
fired up.

Speaker 11 (01:03:39):
So you get checked that out. Because it's about time, right,
it really is. It's about time, but it's also the
perfect time. And I know this sounds like a stereotape
of sorts, but you're right. As baseball grows into more
of an international game, forget about the fact that it's
twenty twenty five, right, Yeah, it's an international game.

Speaker 4 (01:03:57):
You expect these young Latino players.

Speaker 11 (01:04:00):
These Dominican superstars to want to go and play for
a team like the Yankees and shave something that sort
of identifies them.

Speaker 4 (01:04:08):
No, you know what I mean, Like it.

Speaker 11 (01:04:09):
Sounds silly, but it's not. That's how they look, that's
how they feel confident, especially now in twenty twenty five,
when this younger generation is all about.

Speaker 4 (01:04:17):
Being an individual and I want to be me and blah.

Speaker 13 (01:04:20):
Like there's conformity is you know, not a thing people
are down with anymore at all.

Speaker 4 (01:04:24):
So it's the right move. Congrats of the Yankees. Yeah,
I'm a Mets fan, but but you know what it
also means you not.

Speaker 11 (01:04:30):
Only the pressure that the players and the young people
were putting on the Yankees, and they were feeling the
heat from social media and the banter and our show.
Of course, we've been talking about it for a long time, Bally,
Like I said, and your meeting with Hell, this my
meeting with Hal you know, I was like I found
in my fist. I'm like, listen, how I'm serious about
this flu into New Jersey for this look as about
the local here, I'm telling you we don't want to

(01:04:50):
completely shave. It's twenty twenty five. I think the Yankees
are also making a statement, and I think we're the
first to probably say it. They're feeling the heat, fee
the heat, and they know they have to compete, and
they're thinking, look, we have to be the place to be.
And there's no reason for anyone to want to turn
away for this, no reason why anyone should choose to

(01:05:13):
be a met or a Dodger or any other high
market team or other team that would allow this. We're
the Yankees, and if we're going to compete with these
other teams, we have to make this adjustment.
