It was the love of the game. And I had
never heard or seen of anything so stupid, just so stupid.
I had never heard or seen anything like that. I
was in the ninth grade. I was going into my
ninth grade freshman year of high school when that, when
that came came out, and I was just like you know,

I thought the whole movie was super cool, and so
that was one of those signature moments. I don't know why.
And the craziest thing is is when you're younger, you're
so influenced by things like we really was like trying
to do everything. Now, we never spit in each other's mouth.
But I did paint. I did paint a skull on

my face, and I did paint. We were you know,
they were the North Hills Indian So I did paint
an Indian Indian face.
Speaker 3 (03:10):
That was pretty good too.

Only problem is the thing that they don't, you know,
make very clear to you, Jonas, is that that paint
runs when you're in a real game and it's not
a movie like when it's the real thing, that paint runs.
So by the third play, I was like, you know,

rubbing my eyes like profusely to get that, Like my
eyes was just getting irritated, is all get out from
the paint, you know. So that was short lived. Had
to wash the paint off of my face and then
we were good to go.

So yeah, I remember a junior year going into the
senior We were doing Hell Week back then, and I
remember one of the seniors as we were breaking, because
back then it was the first three days we're just
conditioning shorts and T shirts. And then the third day
or the fourth day on Thursday is when you put

all the pads on you started hitting. And I remember
we're doing we're getting ready to break on Wednesday, knowing
that Thursday is going to be the hitting day for
the first time.

And I remember one of the seniors, guy was such
a douche.
Speaker 1 (04:24):
He just says, hey, man, little piece of advice for
all you juniors.
Speaker 2 (04:29):
Better go home, watch the program later tonight. You show
up tomorrow, you're gonna.

Get fed up.

So I didn't watch the program the night before, so
I didn't watch that. I still remember to this day.
So I remember I was like, what's he talking about?

guess what showed up Thursday and I got fed up.

I got destroyed, absolutely destroyed. So maybe it's all they do.

They just like they were seniors they were we were juniors,
and it was they were just tee and off man.
They were not they were not kind. So you know,
it wasn't like I was gonna do anything. I was
tidy back then. So, uh, but you know, is what
is what it is. By the way, Happy Father's Day.

How was the Happy Father's Day to all the fathers

It? Had a really good time.

Man was was in Pittsburgh, Uh doing the Carly Short Foundation.
Carly Short Foundation fun a guy left to raise money.
It raises awareness for gun violence and raise the scholarships
for kids to go to school and and get educated.

It was really good. I was the MC of it,
Jonas Hell. Yeah, you know, it's it's crazy. I get
horrible anxiety. I have horrible social anxiety, and I was
scared to death standing up there.
Speaker 3 (05:56):
But I thought I did pretty good. I pulled it
off pretty good.
Speaker 2 (05:58):
Damn you how did you get over it? How did
you get over it? Uh?
Speaker 4 (06:05):
You know it's interesting my mom, I didn't speak very
well growing up, as some people may allude to when
they comment on how the show goes. But if you
could hear how I sounded when I first started speaking
to the uh, to the media. I always tell the
story my mother. My mother took a interview that I

did and we watched it, and she said, do you
like the way you sound?
Speaker 3 (06:33):
And I said no, I don't I say, you know?
Speaker 4 (06:38):
And I had so many crutch words. Uh, that was
most of my language was crutch words. And clearly I
had a way heavier Pittsburgh accent back then. I know
people hear it now and say he says words funny
and different. Well, it's just a dialect. I worked to
get through it. But what happened was is my mom said,

every morning before I go to school, come meet me,
and while you're brushing your teeth and stuff like that,
instead of going to the other, you know, the restroom
that me and my brothers use, come to my room,
and when you're brushing your teeth, I'm gonna ask you questions.
Speaker 3 (07:18):
You know.
Speaker 4 (07:18):
So my mom used to make me look in the
mirror and she would ask me questions. And she would
always say, if you say or well, you know, or
any crutch words, practice stopping. Like every time she'd ask me,
she said how'd you feel about the game today, or
how do you feel about going into the game this week?
And anytime I would say a crutch word, I'd have
(07:40):
to stop. And that process went on for like years.
My mom would ask me questions. I would look in
the mirror to see how I looked, and that was
how I learned to speak better. And so as I
learned to speak better, it made me more confident to
be able to you know, I grew up in the church,
(08:01):
so you understand that in the church. You know, my
father was a deacon, ended up becoming an ordained minister.
So he's a social anxiety dude too, but he would
be able to get up in front of the congregation
and deliver good sermons. And I asked him what worked
for him, and he basically just said, be yourself, you know,
find a way to be so authentically yourself that you
(08:25):
don't feel as though you know the things that you're
doing or the things that you are saying aren't hitting
home with the people. He's like, it's not about if
it's hitting home with the people, it's about how you
feel about the things that you're saying and not really
resonated with me. And that was how I started to
being you know, beginning to have the confidence to be
able to do radio or do television or mc an event,
(08:47):
even though it scares the death out of me. It
scares me to death, but it's still it's still fun
to take on the challenge of being able to do it,
even just talking to people on the street, you know,
going back home, going back to Pittsburgh. I didn't think
so many people would remember, you know, who I am.
I guess I got a distinct look to me, you know,
(09:07):
I got that big windshield wipe or forehead. So I
think people actually recognize, you know, maybe they won't remember
the name, so to speak.
Speaker 3 (09:15):
At least this is in my mind.
Speaker 4 (09:16):
But a lot of people recognize me, and I always
make it a point to have a conversation with anyone
who recognizes me. Like if you recognize me and you
want to have a conversation, I don't do the whole
you know, hey, good to meet you and keep moving
or you know, okay, thanks, all right, goodbye. You know,
I want to have an experience, just like they want
(09:39):
to have an experience, because it's always a kick in
the head when somebody recognizes you. It's like I was
so good at something that people chose to acknowledge me
or commit me to memory. Where if they actually see
me out it's like, oh that's LeVar Arrington, which is
pretty cool to me. So I'd be wanting to hear
what they have to say as well. More so than
(10:00):
what they want to hear me say to them, I'll
be wanting to hear it because I feel like it's
pretty cool when people become a fan of you or
actually thought so much of you that they remember who
you are for good things, not bad things. So that
was how I learned how to talk and speak much
better than what I did, and it gave me the
(10:20):
confidence my mommy. My mom gave me the confidence to
be able to stand up in front of people and talk,
and so I do pretty well.
Speaker 3 (10:29):
That's awesome.

That's actually a good, good method when you get it
broken there, and every time you go and do a
crutch for it, just stop.
Speaker 4 (10:38):
It's crazy because what you don't realize is using crutch
words takes the same amount of time that it does
to just stop and think about what you want to
say next.
Speaker 3 (10:49):
It feels like an eternity right you say.
Speaker 4 (10:52):
You know or like or these certain things, because you
feel as though the amount of time from your last
word to the next word you're going to say is
so long, But it's really not. Once you realize that,
it's not a whole lot of time that lapses, which,
by the way, if you're speaking and you're being interviewed.
(11:13):
They want to hear what you have to say, so
they'll wait, you know, if you take a little bit
of time, they'll wait. I'd rather you say I answered,
I speak slowly versus say I speak fast and say
like you know, in so many different crutch words during
the time that I'm speaking. So it was it was
super effective. It did, it did. My mom did an
excellent job, and she was an educator. Three degree educator,
(11:36):
you know, degrees from Central State, degrees from Duquanne University,
very well educated and very very very skilled at teaching.
And she did a great job with teaching me how
to speak. Because if you would have hurt me in
the eighth from from third grade to eighth grade, ninth grade,
(11:56):
if you'd have hurt me speak, you'd have been like, dude,
I had as much Pittsburgh slang as you could possibly
have in terms of speaking.

So also, something your dad mentioned about the be yourself.
If you're yourself, you got nothing to worry about as
far as you having stage fright or public speaking or
anything like that. It's the same thing as tying your shoes.
If it's natural, you don't remember doing it. If you've
done it, so much that just becomes part of the

day and it becomes natural. You don't remember, Oh you
tire shoes yesterday. Yeah, but I don't remember.
Speaker 2 (12:35):
I just did it. Like once you learn it, it
becomes a natural action. And so when you're.

Talking about such an exhilarating experience when you first learned
out to tie you.
Speaker 1 (12:44):
I got arrogant about it too. I went double knots.
I still go double knots just to show people. Okay,
it's the bunny air. Wrap it around my ass. I'm
doing it twice. I just learned this. Yeah, it's like.

can't like in my mind, I'm looking at all the
people that are out looking at televisions and sitting around
and celebrating dance like that is the perfect time. That's
the perfect holiday to have a sports event. You're celebrating men.
They're gonna want to do what they want to do.

Most men want to watch sports, even if they're out
to eat. So, which about the way, I had a
burger from the Fieldhouse yesterday here at Top Trees and
State College, PA. They say it's like the most legendary
signature type of burger you could get in and around
these parts. At least it did not disappoint. It did

And I mean, when I tell you it blows away
that sandwich we had in UH in Arizona.

I think some of the criticism levied by LeVar Arrington
toward the Bengals organization has just been rude, to be
honest with you.

the Bengals and Trey Hendrickson have resumed talks on a
contract extension. We got positive signs there, Bar, we got
positive signs there.

We know what he wants. We know what Trey Hendrickson
is looking for. He wants to be paid. He's been
asking for it. He is not shown up to and
participate in any of the off season activities other than
to show up and have a press conference, basically ripping
the organization and their negotiations. He's subject to a little
over one hundred thousand dollars in fines. But if they're

able to get this worked out and figured out, maybe
it's a brand new era of Bengals football where a
disgruntled star gets paid and then we're off and running
and looking towards the season.

Towards the season, I think it's super important for them
to be able to really put these issues to rest.
Jonas for the simple fact that when you're looking at
the possibilities of what exists for the Cincinnati Bengals, it's
the slow starts that put them behind. So if you

get everybody in, you get your leader in and Hendrickson,
you get your rookie sign and get over this whole.
Whatever the discrepancies on the guarantees, you know, canceled guarantees, whatever,
void of guaranteetees, whatever it is, you get through those things.
You get your two defensive ends in, you shore up
that defensive front, and you prepare yourself for the year

to come.

You got a healthy Joe.

Burrow, you got too happy, uh, too happy receiver that
just got their money and chasing Boyd And so to me,
I really believe the stars are aligning for Cincinnati to
have a productive, really really good year. But you got

to stop playing around with issues like this, especially with
players like Hendrickson. Now, I will say, you think about it,
he does have more on his contract. He is under contract,
so there's a level of Hendrickson has to be reasonable
as well and what it is that he's doing in

his approach to everything that's taking place. But if they
can figure that out and they can get everything short
up and just focusing in on football, then Jonas, it
looks like, you know, you take a look at the
Cleveland Browns. I don't know what's going to happen with
the Cleveland Browns. It could be a show of epic

proportions for the Browns this year. I don't know, they
could be really good this year. I just don't think
anybody knows what the Browns are going to be. But
it's the question mark begs to say, it's an opportunity.
You look at the Pittsburgh Steelers. I feel the same
exact way the question marks actually say there's an opportunity.

You look at the Baltimore Ravens. That is the only
team that you sit there. And if I'm the Cincinnati
Bengals and I say, win against the other two teams,
and we got to figure out how do we get
it done against the Baltimore Ravens.
Speaker 3 (21:42):
It's going to be a two.
Speaker 4 (21:43):
Horse race in my estimation, and that's.
Speaker 3 (21:47):
Who they got to be focused in on.
Speaker 4 (21:48):
So it's a golden opportunity for them to get either
a wild card spot or actually even compete for the
Division and the AFC North. Because I don't believe I'm
if I'm measuring it in a wig in it based
off of the question marks at the position, both both
quarterback positions in Cleveland and in Pittsburgh are in question,

and that's the position you don't want to have in
question going into a season. So if I'm Cincinnati, make
everything right, get back to just focusing in on football
and get ready for the season.

Aaron Rodgers reiterated this. I want to say a couple
of years ago, the last offseason or the year before,
but his point was every year, there's about eight to
twelve teams who are legitimate Super Bowl contenders that you
look at and go, oh, I could see them winning
a Super Bowl, And there's probably about eight. I would

put it on the lower portion of his estimate as
far as teams that you look at and go all right, tho,
I could actually see them win a Super Bowl. I
put Cincinnati on that list. And part of the reason
I put Cincinnati on that list is because they do
have a franchise quarterback, and they have a franchise quarterback
who's won big games in the postseason. We've seen it,
We've seen it happen before. So if you're the Bengals
(23:10):
and you know you're one of those teams on the
short list, I'm not screwing around, as you laid it
out with altering the window altering the opportunity for the
window to shut alter.

No, this is my chance.
Speaker 1 (23:26):
I've got a real opportunity here to go and win
a Super Bowl.
Speaker 2 (23:32):
If this was somebody who was.
Speaker 1 (23:33):
Looking for a new contract and you know, maybe there
were some questions or he was coming off you know,
injuries or a down year, I could totally get that.
Trey Hendrickson led the league in sacks, He's done it
multiple years in a row to be able to produce
at a high level. He's outplayed his contract by a mile.
This should be something that they need to get done

and get figured out, because, as you said, when you
start playing around with this, now you're playing around with
a real opportunity to chase the title. If you are
one of those eight to twelve teams and they are
that are legitimate Super Bowl contenders.
Speaker 2 (24:11):
And I just look at it and I.
Speaker 1 (24:12):
Go if I'm the organization and I have a chance
here to do something we've never done in the history
of the organization. That takes care of a lot of
problems on the back end. But you've got to invent
and you've got to invest on the front end in
order to make that happen. Figure this out, get it
done and stop jacking around with an opportunity to go

chase the title and really actually win a super Bowl
this time and not come up short like you have
in years past.
Speaker 4 (24:39):
I totally agree, and I think that it ultimately comes
down to trusting what it is that the plan is.
And if the plan is indeed to try to win
a Super Bowl, which would you would assume? The bottom
line is number one on the list and winning a
Super Bowl has to be high in the top five
(25:01):
of things you want to achieve and accomplish as an
organization in the National Football League. And and so just
assuming that, knowing that rising tides, you know, they raise
all ships, why would you not want to win a
Super Bowl? That makes your team more more investible, more valuable.
(25:23):
It makes the players that are on the team more investible,
more more desirable, and more valuable. It just it's it's
good for business, it's good for everything. If you have
a successful team and they've shown they can be successful,
they do not have questions at the quarterbacks position. Only
(25:43):
question would be can Joe Burrow stay healthy? Can he
stay healthy through the mix of the entire season not
have any major setbacks physically in the in the course
of the season, and if Joe Burrow stays healthy with
the receiving corps that he has, you're going to have
a lot of offense. The biggest question mark outside of
(26:03):
Joe Burrow's arm, which you know obviously that is the
biggest key, But you gotta have a defense. You know,
you gotta have a defense. You got to be able
to stop other offenses. And that's going to be a
question mark for the Cincinnati Bengals. If they were to
not have as productive a year as some may be
(26:25):
prognosticating or assuming the type of year they may have,
it's most likely going to be because they don't have
a defense that is sturdy enough to get through the
AFC North.

And also, i mean, let's just call what it is.
They've missed the playoffs last two years. If you're Zach Taylor,
how many more opportunities are you going to get? I mean,
you missed the playoffs three years in a row, and
Joe Burrow's your starting quarterback, there's going to be real
discussions to be had about whether or not Zach Taylor's
the guy for the job. So he's feeling the heat.
There's a lot of people there that are feeling the

heat because the clock ticking. And we broke this down
when it was happening because last offseason and going all
throughout the year, and we were having discussions about it.
It's like, hey man, they've got Jamar Chase, they've got
T Higgins, and they've got Trey Hendrickson, and it's like,
all right, well if you have to pay two of

the three. And I think a lot of people felt like,
all right, well, you get Jamar Chase done obviously, you
get Trey Hendrickson done obviously, and if you can make
it work with T Higgins, if you can make it
work with T Higgins, yes, maybe you go in that direction.

Instead. They got both the wide.

Receivers taken care of and the star defensive players looking
around going what about me?
Speaker 2 (27:41):
And they're like, eh, yeah, I don't know.

It's just like, what like the way that they've handled
this and the way that they've operated is just a
little strange to me. And I don't know how many
organizations would have would have decided on paying T Higgins
and getting that taken care of instead of going the
direction should have Trey Hendrickson.

I don't know why I didn't say, Higgins, that's that's
a slip.

you shored up your offense, and there should be no
excuses in terms of the product you receive on the
offensive side of the ball.

It's within their strategy and they've tried to maybe rework
it or figure it out how to try to get
hendricks into a place of where he's comfortable and happy
with a contract, but they're comfortable and happy with the
contract as well. I would assume that's what they're trying
to do right now. I don't believe this is posturing

of any any kind. I think they It would be
ridiculous to think that they don't want Hendrickson back, considering that,
as you mentioned, his output was amazing, top of the league,
and you still didn't have a very good defense. So
you have to hope that the additions that you've made

this offseason are going to go a very long way
in terms of the success of your defense. It has
to be much better than what it was last season.
So I don't think I don't have a problem with
them getting everybody done on offense. And if Hendrickson wants
to have a problem based upon them suring up their offense,

that's something he's got to work on personally. That's a
personal decision for him. He's got to put himself in
the best position to be signable. And the Cincinnati Bengals
have got to take into consideration that this man has
been a very productive player. And this is a totally
discriminate league is all about discrimination, and the discrimination, no,

it really is.

I learned that a long time ago. Somebody, a coach,
told me that this is pure discrimination. They discriminate on
how you look, how you're built, what your body fat is,
how fast you run, how high you can jump, how
you handle blockers, how you catch the ball, how you
throw the ball, your finger size, your finger length. Yeah,

all of that, right. So it's a discriminatory business. And
the one the biggest thing that they discriminate on is production.

The way you're treated and the way.
Speaker 4 (30:39):
Things are handled is based off of how productive you are.
It's a production business, and Hendrickson has been productive and
so and knowing that he's been as productive as he's been.
They got to be into they got to be aware
of the fact that you got to compensate production because
that's what this league is based upon.

And he can't show up right like, he can't cave
at this point with how however, with how hard he's
come at the organization in what he's asking for and
what he's demanding, even though he does have that one
year under contract, he can't cave at this point. He's
got to be locked in, all in on getting a
new deal or getting traded elsewhere.

Like that's got to happen, Like it's gotta happen.
Speaker 4 (31:22):
Well, I would say again, while he outperformed his contract,
he signed the contract, and there's always that caveat. I
know there will always be debates and discussions. Well, he
outplayed his contract, and look at what this guy's getting
paid over here. Look at what this guy's getting paid
(31:44):
over here. You out played your contract, but it is
still indeed a contract. So I don't if if you
want to call it caving in, you know, I don't know.
I don't know that you call it caving in if
he comes back and he plays, just for the simple
(32:04):
fact that it's his contract. Now he could say he
could take it as far as he wants to take it.
But do you want to be a sit out? Do
you want to lose money? You know, if they can't
trade you and you're not going to come back, then
now they have the right to find you. And now
not only are you not making the money you be
(32:25):
making if you had gotten a new contract, but you're
losing money.

So I don't know.

I don't think the right answer is to stay away
if they don't do the contract. I think for what
it is worth, you got to suck it up and
you got to go out there and you got to
play that one year. And just know that at the
end of this one year, this last year of the contract,
I'm preparing to go play for another team.

Unless they franchise. Unless they franchise, which you know, unless
they franchise, there could always be that too. It is

In case you missed it, it finally happened. The Red
Sox made a blockbuster trade, trading away their designated hitter,
Rafael Devers. Of course, he was lots of controversy this
year when they asked him to move from third base
to first base, said now he's a designated hitter. Now
they've moved him to San Francisco where he'll likely be
a designated hitter again.
Speaker 1 (34:50):
This whole story is hilarious. Yes, the Red Sox had
this guy playing third base. They go out, they sign
Alex Bregman. They don't tell him they're signing Alex Bregman,
who's a third baseman. Then after they signed Bregman to
play third base, they tell their previous third baseman, Rafael Devers, hey,
so you mind playing DH He gets pissed, finally agrees
(35:13):
to it. Then their first baseman goes down with an injury.
They come to Rafael Devers again and say, hey, would
you mind playing first base? He says, nope, maybe our
front office should do their job. They're like, okay, I
guess we'll just keep him at DH, and then they
end up trading him away and they just gave him
(35:34):
like a ten year contract in twenty twenty three. He's
a great player, three time All Star, and now they've
got to move on from him because they committed to
Alex Bregman without sorting through what the potential fallout could
be if they made the move. And so now once again,
just like they did Mookie Betts, they traded away a guy,
a superstar potentially in his prime to the NL West
(35:58):
again job by the Boston Red Sox and the people
there are there, you go, way to go, socks.
Speaker 3 (36:07):
But why wouldn't he want to play first base?
Speaker 4 (36:10):
Because it's like that the easiest, that's the easiest position
to play.
Speaker 3 (36:13):
He's already got his money, right.
Speaker 1 (36:15):
Well, yeah, he already got his money, but he was
pissed that they wanted to switch positions before, So like, hey,
could you now go to DH and then you'll just
hit we'll take you away from third base. He's like,
all right, fine, but I'm not happy about it. And
then they're like, hey, would you mind going to first
base too?

Whoa hold on a second, you You guys should have
thought this whole thing through. So this was sort of
his his pushback against the organization for making moves, not
telling him about it, and then asking him to quote
unquote cover their ass because they are a guy short
at first pace.

But and I understand, I understand that, But isn't there
something to be said about the idea of your.
Speaker 3 (36:57):
Getting paid handsomely? Yeah? You a job? Yeah don't you?
I mean, if they're paying him for.

Ten years, and I'm certain it's a whole lot of
money because it's baseball and it's guaranteed, why wouldn't you
just adjust adapt Like why to beef? Why to drama?
That sounds like to me he didn't want to be there, Yes,
what it sounds like?

Yeah, Like the relationship at that point was probably fractured.
The owners tried to talk with him and have a
discussion about it. After he made some comments. They met
with him and then they realized pretty quick, Okay, this
ain't happening. So now he gets traded to the Giants.
The Giants needed a bat. They've got great pitching there.
They're competing with the Dodgers and the Padres in that division,

and so now they land their dh that they're looking for.
So they've just improved their offense.

But it's just.

It's superstar guaranteed money behavior and the fact that it's
the same organization who moved on from Mookie Bets when
they did. People in Boston are looking around Cohen, come on, man, like,
what are we doing. It's already bad enough that Brad
Marshan is in the Stanley Cup and might win another
Stanley Cup final with the way that he's playing, and

he's a former Boston Bruin. The Celtics were eliminated, it's
a difficult time for Boston sports really.

Yeah, but they they had Big Poppy and all those
guys and Manny you know, and all those guys. I mean,
you had a hey day and you had Tom Brady
and the Patriots they had a hey Day, and you
had KG and then you had a championship last year

So they had their their moment.
