Speaker 2 (00:32):
Get this you're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Huh, this
one's not gonna last long.
Speaker 3 (00:50):
No, and it shouldn't.
Speaker 2 (00:52):
Yeah, I hate that song.
Speaker 3 (00:56):
It should not good.
Speaker 4 (00:56):
It should have lasted all of no days on that.
I don't know why Lamar thought that was that.
Speaker 2 (01:04):
I gotta tell you, I like some of the selections,
and some are just absolutely awful.
Speaker 5 (01:13):
I gotta say they just get worse and worse.
Speaker 2 (01:17):
That's not true. I mean, this is.
Speaker 3 (01:22):
I mean, I love it's.
Speaker 2 (01:25):
Know this song.
Speaker 5 (01:26):
Oh not this one, but the one that was started it.
Speaker 2 (01:29):
Oh yeah, Well there's been a there's been a couple
that have just been awful.
Speaker 3 (01:35):
Yeah, it's not not been ideal for U.
Speaker 2 (01:37):
The one that he was trying to wrap like DC.
That was not goody terrible.
Speaker 3 (01:42):
That was terrible. It sounded like three to eleven.
Speaker 4 (01:45):
And then he started getting upset when I would mention
that because I it sounds not like the band three yeah,
and then say, well they don't even look the same.
Speaker 3 (01:54):
And I do.
Speaker 4 (01:55):
Like how Lorena that was her fallback song. Knowing that
this hour two version of what LeVar had planned was awful,
you go back to life, back to reality. What was
what didn't make the cut on the board there that
you would have played to try and fill in the
empty space since we called out the song for being
(02:16):
terrible on the air, What would have been optioned.
Speaker 3 (02:19):
B Super Freak was another one.
Speaker 2 (02:22):
I thought that one was fine.
Speaker 4 (02:24):
Yeah, all right, that works both. I mean both are
better than whatever he chose. I don't even get the song,
but you know is what it is? Two pros and
a cup of Joe Here on Fox Sports Radio, var
Arrington not here again. I'll get used to that. Brady Quinn,
Jonas Knox with you. We're going to take you all
the way up until nine a m. Eastern time, six
o'clock Pacific here on this Thursday edition of the show.
(02:47):
We've obviously got preseason in the NFL. Wrapping up here,
We're going to catch up with Kenny Dillingham coming up
here shortly. But one of the things that we were
talking about yesterday, which sparked all sorts of fun back
and forth in conversation, was exactly what's going on there
with Justin Fields in New York Aaron Glenn defending Justin Fields,
(03:10):
and we were pointing out, how, you know, it does
create a little bit of an interesting aspect to Week
one in the sense that the Jets, in essence shows
Justin Fields over Aaron Rodgers. Both those teams are playing
each other. And LeVar was really citing all of a
sudden with the New York Jets, which he was way
(03:31):
against the past two years on this show, and Brady
and I both accepted full responsibility bad call.
Speaker 3 (03:39):
Thought they would be better.
Speaker 4 (03:41):
You're right, you can't overcome dysfunction, and it's just it's
interesting hearing some of the stories that are coming out
of New York. Already we're not even at the final
preseason game, and all of a sudden, the Jets are
holding secret practices. The word is the Jets held a
practice on Sunday. The following Saturday Nights lost to the
(04:03):
Giants with no assistant coaches. It was just Aaron Glenn
and the players. Glenn may have gotten the idea from
Bill Parcells, who did that back in the day. But
even then Parcels, you know, took all the coaches off
the field and just said, we don't like how you're practicing.
You guys figure it out. But it reportedly was not
(04:24):
supposed to get out. Garrett Wilson did an interview with
some social media influencer and then it got out. So
the players got asked about it, of course because it's
New York. And here was Andre Cisco, the safety with
the Jets, who discussed the practice that Aaron Glenn called
what is up.
Speaker 6 (04:40):
To for you guys kind of an ownership team, a little.
Speaker 7 (04:42):
Man, yeah, ownership thing and also just us, like you said,
owning the calls, owning the defense, and really leaning into
you know, what is it that our coaches are gonna
be calling and why are they calling it? And can
we even step in and kind of predict it, you know,
as a defense. So you know, sure what kind of
took over those duties on that day and it was
just player led from that standpoint, so you know, we
(05:02):
gathered ourselves, we took ownership of how many reps you
were going to get, and then just holding Goud' account
of how we're getting to the ball, executing the calls
and so it was effective.
Speaker 3 (05:12):
Is that kind of an AG driven thing like you
mentioned that to you guys after the game or all
coming down?
Speaker 7 (05:18):
Yeah, so that was the AG thing. And he put
his in position just alert into and what we're going
to walk into so that it wasn't a surprise at all.
But yeah, he prepared us for it, and you know,
he said, this is something that he envisions his team being,
you know, a player driven team, and so those players
driven practices are just a way to enforce it.
Speaker 4 (05:35):
So again that was Jet safety Andre Cisco talking about
the players only with Aaron Glenn included practice they had
Sunday following Saturday night's preseason game against the Giants. I
don't know about you. I just feel like we're already
taking an odd path here with this whole thing with
Aaron Glenn.
Speaker 2 (05:51):
No, no, no, no, no, this is fine, Like this is
something that as a head coach you're trying to get
the players in the team to understand they're only going
to go as far as the leadership in that lockerom.
That's the reality of most teams. It's player led, it's
not coach led. You know, we're gonna speak with Kenny
(06:12):
Dillingham coming up here in this next segment, and I
would imagine he'll imagine he'll echo that it's about players,
not not coaches. So give the assistant coaches the day off,
allow the players to get in sync and understand situationally,
what's gonna happen out there in the field. I mean,
all sorts of stuff happens about the course of the game.
(06:34):
Headsets go out, you can't get the communication in you're
on a big third down, Yeah, you better make sure
that you know your quarterback, you're you know, linebacker, your
middle linebacker, Mike linebacker, they know what to call, you know,
or even just signal in, hey, hey give boys, this
is the coverture plan, like, this is what we want
to run. So making sure that the players understand the
(06:56):
scheme and why they're doing what they're doing is just
as important as anything. And I actually think this is
a unique way of doing it. You know, I've had
coaches do all kinds of different things through the years
to help players get a better understanding and and you know,
feel more accountable to each other and to the coaching staff.
And I remember, I remember a year where offensive players
(07:17):
switched to defense. Defense switched to the offense, and we
did it. We did a whole install, did an entire
day in camp. And the whole reason for it was
you don't have the perspective of the other side of
the ball, so you don't know what their job entails,
how difficult their job is. So live in their shoes
for a day, understand what that feels like, and then
(07:39):
you could have a greater understanding for you know, instead
of being frustrated that they're not converting on third down,
you can have a better understanding of why. So there's
all sorts of lessons to be learned from that. I
think it's a good it's a good exercise. Will matter
in the grand scheme of things, maybe if enough players
buy in. But you know, to me, I don't look
at this as Okay, they got drum in their preseason game.
(08:02):
This is reactionary. I think this is more of hey, like,
we've got a little more time here to develop and
work as a team before we get a season, what's
all about game planning, and this is an opportunity for
us to grow together as.
Speaker 4 (08:13):
A team if they get wiped out Week one. I
don't know, man, I just I got a really bad
feeling about this whole thing. The handling of the Aaron
Rodgers stuff was strange. This, I mean, I get the
idea behind it, but it feels like pretty early on
(08:37):
that he's got to like have the players run their
own practice, Like this would feel like something you would
maybe do if you felt like they weren't paying attention
or weren't all there in the middle of the season.
And we're not even before the last preseason game. They're
already doing it. It just it just feels like it's
already kind of awkward. And then the Justin Field stuff
(08:59):
and his response to the Justin Field stuff, it just
it seems like with Ben Johnson, and you know, they're
both first time coaches, both from the same staff in Detroit,
like you can kind of understand the plan a little bit.
But with Aaron Glenn it feels like things are kind
of well, we'll just try this out, and I'm gonna
(09:22):
and I'm gonna try that out, and and this is
how I feel about this and this, and in that media.
Speaker 3 (09:27):
Market, it's gonna be a frenzy.
Speaker 4 (09:29):
And especially if the guy you let go like we
talked about yesterday, performs well and the guy you brought
in struggles. And on top of that, you're holding unique
practices like this before the season even starts. I just
I'm a little skeptical, skeptical about the whole thing. Maybe
it don't make sense, listen. Maybe the roster is good
enough to where they overcome it.
Speaker 3 (09:50):
I don't know. It just I'm a little seems a
little suspect to me.
Speaker 2 (09:54):
I understand the hesitation. I think if you're gonna be,
you know, hesitant about any of it's the fact that
he is a first time head coach. They've got a
first time offensive play caller. Even though you know Engstrand
was part of the play calling process in Detroit, he
was behind Ben Johnson, and so there's there's questions there.
(10:15):
You know, Steve Wilkes takes over his defensive coordinator. The
forty nine ers moved on from him, you know, they
didn't feel like he was doing a good enough job there.
So I think when you look at everyone who's being
anointed and put in positions, and by the way, Aaron
Glenn's stated he's not calling the defense, he's delegated to
Steve Wilkes. I think when you look at it from
that aspect, there's a lot of question marks. There's a
(10:36):
question marks about the quarterback and whether not justin fields
can ultimately do it consistently at a high enough level.
This question is are going to be about what the
offense looks like, their identity. Have they improved the offensive
line have they not? You know, how good can this
defense be? I mean, Robert Saul was a hell of
a defensive coordinator and you know, at times the defense
(10:59):
played really well. I mean at times too, I think
they kind of got their back broke because offensively they
struggled two years ago when Rogers wasn't there, and even
when Rogers was there at times, you know, it felt
like the defense just kind of got broken to a point. So,
you know, how's this going to look with Steve Wilkes,
you know, defensive coordinator who you know, a team like
(11:21):
the forty nine have moved on from. I think there's
there's a lot of questions about this team. You know,
more so now that you don't have a guy who's
a first ballot future Hall of Famer who's playing quarterback
for you, and we've got some sort of issue right
now with Jonas Knox. I'm not sure if he's gone
(11:42):
to the bathroom or the computer. I don't think it's
that important that you need to worry about that. This
is something that Leaves should be able to figure out.
Speaker 4 (11:55):
We tried yesterday. It's not working for some reason. Yeah
it did not. You know, we reset it and everything
did not go through, But you know not, I.
Speaker 2 (12:02):
Don't understand why this doesn't extend it closer to you.
I mean, it's not that complicate, and it would have
got so mad about.
Speaker 4 (12:09):
It yesterday, yeah, that it would be in the camera shot.
And you know, I'm not trying to piss These.
Speaker 8 (12:14):
Wires are like taped onto the computer from the desk.
It's very uh finicky.
Speaker 2 (12:20):
Or when you just get a longer wire, that's all
you need to do.
Speaker 3 (12:24):
I'm not trying to pissola off.
Speaker 8 (12:26):
I don't my computers.
Speaker 2 (12:29):
He is, have them. Just buy like a ten foot cord.
Speaker 5 (12:34):
That'll take a month.
Speaker 3 (12:37):
You get least frustrated.
Speaker 4 (12:40):
And he's not even on the stream yard stream like
he's not even partaking anymore.
Speaker 3 (12:45):
I mean, there he is.
Speaker 2 (12:47):
You know, he just seems you could find the cord
at best Buy, probably some sort of you know, home depot,
frizs there, fries whatever the hell you guys got out.
Speaker 3 (12:58):
There the circuits. He's still still around or no, it's not.
I don't know, to go on an adventure like that.
Speaker 2 (13:06):
Yeah, well, if you told him there's a happy hour specialist,
now there's.
Speaker 3 (13:13):
There's open bar best Buy.
Speaker 8 (13:16):
But I wonder what's easier that or just like a
long like backscratcher that we could just put in there
and then you can just reach over touch.
Speaker 3 (13:23):
It that works. Could do that?
Speaker 5 (13:25):
I think that's easy.
Speaker 3 (13:28):
I think it would fit the show.
Speaker 2 (13:30):
Yes it would. And then Lee would use that backscratcher
and it would have all sorts of his skin flaked
on it.
Speaker 6 (13:36):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (13:36):
Well yeah, I found some flakes today.
Speaker 3 (13:41):
That is nasty.
Speaker 4 (13:42):
Can I tell you what the most captivating part of
the a f C East is for me? Since we're
talking about the Jets, it's not who's going to win
the division, it's who's going to finish last.
Speaker 3 (13:53):
Because it's either going to be Miami or the Jets.
Speaker 4 (13:56):
All Right, it's gonna be Miami or New York to
finish his last in the a f C, and I
can't decide who I'm going with because I think New
England's going to finish second and then either the Jets
or the Dolphins are going to be awful this year,
and I can't figure out which direction I want to go.
So I'm really torn on that, so that that's really
the one. Like I'm I'm pretty much ready to go
(14:17):
as far as all the other divisions go. In the NFL,
I'm not ready to reveal him yet because we'll save
that for our picks. But in the AFC, East really
torn on who's going to finish dead last?
Speaker 2 (14:29):
So what was our bet? By the way, with LeVar,
is it that New England will finish second? Yeah, or higher?
And he thinks they're going to finish last.
Speaker 4 (14:37):
I think so, yeah, I think that's what it was. Yeah,
I think that's I think that's what it was.
Speaker 2 (14:44):
I guess we'll see.
Speaker 4 (14:45):
He's been really really erratic with the with the New
York Jets and what does.
Speaker 2 (14:51):
He's been all over the place with the whole stuff.
We had that conversation about you know, sheduor Sanders and
the Browns he was claiming he wasn't going to make
the roster at the beginning of the spring, after you
got drafted ahead in the summer, in the summertime. Now
he's like, no, it's just startom after one preseason game.
It's just startom now because no one's gonna be able
to live. I mean, it's it's all over the place.
Speaker 4 (15:12):
The thing I love about the Jets analysis is he
was steadfast that it doesn't matter who the quarterback or
the coach is, you can't escape dysfunction. And then they
get a new quarterback and coach and he's more optimistic,
yet the owner who's the author of the dysfunction is
still there. Literally, like it goes against everything that he's
(15:36):
been saying, like everything, you can't escape it no matter what.
But this time it's real, all right, this time's gonna
be different. It just doesn't make any sense. And so
I'm I don't know whether or not it's gonna be
Miami or it's gonna be New York. Somebody's finishing dead
last there between those two teams. And that's really the
issue I'm having right now. So I'll let you know
(15:58):
as soon as I'm able to come out up with that.
But I got a little bit of time here, tell me.
Speaker 2 (16:02):
Which way you bet, because I'm I'm not gonna follow
you in that regard.
Speaker 4 (16:09):
I'm probably leaning the Jets Knocks Loucks. Yeah, I'm probably
going the Jets. Yeah, I think I'm gonna go you, Mimi. No,
I was Miami up until the last few days, and
then the last few days have felt problematic to me.
So then I'm gonna go with the Jets to finish
(16:29):
dead last. There, So congratulations Fins to the left fence
of the right.
Speaker 2 (16:33):
I just feel like I have more of an idea
of what the Dolphins are than I do the Jets.
So I would side with you saying it's gonna be
the Jets. Dolphins finish third and they've got a better quarterback. Well, yeah,
he's proved himself at this point. You gotta stay healthy though.
Speaker 4 (16:49):
Yeah, if if Tua gets hurt, can I make the pick?
Can we do qualifiers? I like the Dolphins.
Speaker 2 (16:56):
You know, I don't have any problem with it because
that's in reality how it works. Yeah, but some people
not to be named, not on today's show have an
issue with it.
Speaker 4 (17:06):
Yeah, they would call that fence riding well there's also Yeah,
guys like Rob Parker.
Speaker 3 (17:13):
Sports is a short menu.
Speaker 2 (17:14):
It's about wins and losses.
Speaker 4 (17:16):
It's like, Rob, you were calmnist for years. How did
you write articles? Did you just give them a box
score or did you tell the tale of what happened
in the game. You can't just go wins and losses
black and white on this stuff. If Tua gets injured,
the Dolphins will finish last. If not, they'll finish third.
That's it pretty easy.
Speaker 2 (17:36):
Not a big delta there.
Speaker 3 (17:37):
But all right, well, hey, so what we got to
work with.
Speaker 4 (17:42):

We'll call it a little over ten minutes from now,
or excuse me, a little over fifteen minutes from now. Rather,
we're going to tell you about somebody who got something
that they definitely deserved, and it was this show who
was singing their praises before anybody else was. All right,
just a friendly reminder, So that'll be yours here again,
coming up about fifteen minutes from now. Right now, though,
(19:40):
we get a coach in the house. He is the
head coach of the eleventh rank to Arizona State Sun Devils.
He is Kenny Dillingham, joining us here right now on
Fox Sports Radio. Coach, thanks so much for getting up
early with us.
Speaker 6 (19:55):
Of course, I appreciate y'all having.
Speaker 2 (19:57):
Me, coach, kind of take me through what you thought
was the secret, or not even not even secret, just
you know what brought you guys so much success last
year that you're obviously trying to build off of and
go even higher head into this season.
Speaker 6 (20:09):
Yeah, well, I would say won. We had good players.
Coaches are as important as players, I think everybody knows that,
and we had good players. I think two those players
were all about the team. They were all about winning.
They were all about each other, and they had real
relationships off the field, and that connectivity, you know, transpired
(20:32):
through passion on the field. And you could see we
had really good players playing as hard as they could
every single time they took the field. And when you
do that, you're a tough out. You're a tough team
to beat when you have good players playing as hard
as they can every snap.
Speaker 4 (20:48):
Coach, after the scrimmage on Saturday, you talked about the
history of Arizona State, the history of the program and
trying to overcome that. How have you gone about instilling
that philosophy and that mindset into your players.
Speaker 6 (21:01):
Well, I just tell the guys that you know, you
get we're getting all this hype, and that's rightfully deserved,
and they deserve it all, but it all means nothing.
And every other team that's gotten this hype before you
has followed to the expectations. And history tends to repeat itself.
So if we don't want to repeat history, we have
(21:22):
to do what you know hasn't been done in the
past and block everything out and worry about right now,
worry about the day, the best version of us today,
and treat every day like it is the Super Bowl,
and if you just do that on repeat, we're gonna
be the best version of us. And whatever happens happens.
Speaker 2 (21:39):
Hey, coach, you know, I think until your success last year,
I don't know how many people kind of knew about
your story. Nationally, we've got a more early morning audience,
but your Phoenix native you're all my monits there is
going to say. You've talked about always dreaming for this
opportunity that you're in right now. Just talk to me
about the journey to get to this point.
Speaker 6 (21:56):
Yeah, obviously born and raised here. I used to grow
up coming to games and watch and Jake Plummer and
playing catching, and you know the tailgating area and climb
this a little mountain up to the stadium. You had
climbed the mountain to take the shortcut to get up
there on game day. So I remember those as core memories.
And you know, I just was a high school coach
(22:17):
out here, then became a coffee boy here so and
then just kind of ran the racket of college football
in terms of moving around and you know, Memphis and
Auburn for the state and Oregon, but this was always
a place that had a special place in my heart
because I used to climb the mountain to get here,
and I used to tail get here, and I used
to be a fan of the stadiums, and I'm an
(22:37):
alumni and my wife's an alumni. So this was definitely
a place that I always, you know, dreamt of being
a part of, not just as a fan.
Speaker 4 (22:45):
Arizona State head coach Kenny Dealingham with us here on
Fox Sports Radio. You mentioned Memphis, Auburn, also Florida State, Oregon.
What did you take from those programs that have sort
of the blue blood background that you've brought to Arizona
State to try and bring in there.
Speaker 6 (23:01):
Yeah, Memphis, I took the grit. I mean, our team
there was just gritty, like the work was not too
big for him. They were all about the work. So
I took that mindset of the work and the grit.
When I went to Auburn, I took how do you
practice with really high level players and keeping them healthy? Right?
I think Gus did a phenomenal job of keeping getting
(23:23):
guys to the game and developing, but also keeping them healthy.
When I went to Florida State, you know, we took
over the program at below and we were trying to
build it, and I took over perseverance and how if not,
you're not just going to be show up everywhere and win.
How it takes a process. And then you see coach Arvel,
you know, two years prior they went undefeated and his
(23:45):
process you know worked at that point and it still
is working. Uh. And then you go I go to
Oregon and we take over a team that's winning and
having success. And I learned from Dan how to look
at things from a defensive push effective and how to
practice with a defensive mindset that's a little different than
the other coaches that've been with that were offense. Then
(24:07):
you see the fans support, and so for me, it
was I took a little bit of whether it was
a coaching experience or big picture experience, program experience, from
every little place I took and kind of molded it
all into you know what we do here?
Speaker 2 (24:23):
Well, coach, you've got one of the more refreshing styles,
especially for this era of college football, and the way
you handle your team, talk to your players. I want
to talk about some of those players. Sam Levity transferred
in from Michigan State, had a phenomenal year last year.
How do you get, in your opinion, a quarterback up
the speed, so quick and operating and running your system
the way you wanted to?
Speaker 6 (24:43):
Yeah, well does went the coach of Royal in terms
of you know, his system and his ability to coach quarterbacks.
But at the end of the day, you played the position.
If you don't put in the work, it doesn't matter
who your coach is and all that doesn't matter. And
Sam show and he put in an amount of work
that I don't know if I've ever seen before. Every
(25:06):
single day twenty four to seven. He was obsessed with
winning the quarterback job, with being the quarterback, whether that
was with his body, whether that was in the film room.
He became obsessed with knowing everything. And I think that's
what separated him and what's taken him from people a
person that people don't know about to a person who's recognized.
(25:27):
I mean, he was top five and in IL sales
in the last month because the work he put in.
He deserves it. And there's nothing more gratifying as a
coach and seeing kids who work at a level that's
just so elite, and then they start to get the
notoriety and they start to get the benefit out of
that work. There's nothing more gratifying for me. So what
(25:50):
was our secret and how did we get him up
to speed? He got himself up to speed. It was him.
It was his ability to be self driven. It was
his drive, it was his want to be great. It
wasn't I Dillingham, it wasn't Morga's Royal, it was Sam
love It.
Speaker 4 (26:04):
Arizona State head coach Kenny Dillingham joining us here on
Fox Sports Radio. So we're a little over a week
away from the opener against Northern Arizona, and we've talked
about you know, some people in the NFL they like
the preseason and they don't think we need the preseason.
In college football, you don't get one. Do you feel
prepared with no preseason game going into this year with
(26:25):
a lot of expectations for the program.
Speaker 6 (26:27):
Yeah, I mean for me, I definitely feel prepared. It's
game one. Without a preseason. You're trying to do these
like mock scrimmages and all these other you know, unique
things to try to simulate game day, but nothing's like
game day and until it's game day. So it's definitely
one of the games that I'm the most nervous going
into is that first game, just because it's your first
(26:51):
game and you've had zero real game experience with this
new team. And regardless of how many returners you have back,
every years a new year, every dynamic in your team's
a new dynamic, and regardless of how many people you
have backed, So there's definitely that piece of unknown that
goes into the first game that you know, maybe with
(27:13):
some preseason you don't have. But I feel prepared. These
guys have worked their butts off this fall camp. We
just concluded it. Today's actually the first day we're not
in fall camp mode. So yeah, I'm just I'm excited
to see these guys go out and play.
Speaker 2 (27:27):
How excited to see Jordan Tyson back. Obviously a first
team All Big twelve receiver last year for you guys,
he's viewed as one of the best in college football.
It's gonna be good getting back healthy.
Speaker 6 (27:38):
I mean, we had a fluke deal last year. But
up until that point, I believe weeks four through twelve
he was leading the country or at least top two.
But I thought it was leading the country and those
are not eight weeks span for yards, and uh, that's
what the testament is work Coach Ward. He's really brought
into to the work that Coach Hines Ward has you know,
(28:00):
instilled in him and what it takes to be successful.
And he's really doubled down and rung the bell and
answered the challenge that Haines is put in front of him.
And once again, same thing I said about Sam, that's
a guy who just has shown up and he's worked.
He's get fifteen pounds this offseason. He's bigger, he's stronger,
he's fat. So he comes up and meets with me
(28:20):
when I meet with Sam, to learn coverages. So you know,
there's not a secret way to get better. And I
think both of those guys embody the work, and when
you embody the work, usually success follows coach.
Speaker 4 (28:35):
One of our regular guests here on the show Pete Prisco.
He's an Arizona State alum. He's also a bit of
a curmudgeon, and you have gotten him excited about Arizona
State football again.
Speaker 3 (28:47):
He's all fired up.
Speaker 4 (28:49):
He was at the playoff game like he is back
all in, fully invested, not literally, which we've gotten on
him for. But do you sense though there at ground
level that there's a changing of the Tide that you've
helped and your players have helped bring back that program
to where it was back during those Jake Plumber days.
Speaker 6 (29:11):
Oh yeah, this team has definitely absolutely rejuvenized the valley.
I mean, we have this city, it's absolutely fired up.
I mean, we have seventy five hundred new season tickets.
We've sold every premium seat in the stadium. We have
a ninety seven percent season ticket or ninety six percent
season ticket renewal rate. We've already had fourteen thousand tickets
(29:35):
downloaded student tickets, not all the other tickets, fourteen thousand
student tickets downloaded for a week one at an au.
Like when you drive around the city, people have Arizona
state license plates, Arizona state flags. There is an unbelievable
resurgence of sun double Bride going on in this city
(29:55):
right now, and you're doing it in a price that
people retire in. I think Steve Sweyer used to say
when he was at Florida, and people work their whole
lives to move to Florida, I'm letting you do it
right now. As a high school kid, I copy paste
from one of the greatest coaches of all time. People
work their whole lives to move to Arizona, right, come
(30:15):
do it in college.
Speaker 2 (30:18):
I was gonna say, is there a better place where
your program gets rolling? Just to have fun, the partying,
the student fan base. I mean it's a big school too,
so i'd imagine there's a good feel, a lot of
good vibes going on campus right now for you guys.
Speaker 6 (30:31):
Oh yeah, I mean our guys get Like they said,
when they got here, nobody knew who our guys were.
We were three and nine. Now everybody knows who are
guys are are guys. I mean they go out and
they get treated, they get taken care of, you know,
just by people in general. They're like, Oh, that's Damian Alford.
Oh that's Been Colman, that's short and Tice, and that's
(30:51):
Sam Lovett whatever that is. And it's so fun to
see these guys who show it up and who said yes.
Everybody was saying no. You know, we really challenged people
three years ago to say yes when we're three and nine,
Say yes when we have NCAA sanctions, Say yes when
everybody's going to say no. And it's going to be
way more sweet when you get there. And we're not
(31:13):
there yet. But it's starting to become more sweet. And
the challenge is can we block out the noise right
and can we just go to work? And you're going
to leave the legacy here that lasts forever. And anytime
that you have an opportunity to do something that's really
never been done, that's special. A lot of places you
can go and achieve something that's been accomplished before. We
(31:35):
have a chance to do something that's never been done.
And in order to do something that's never been done,
you got to work like you've never worked. And that
excitement in the city is here, the fan base is here,
everything is here for us to really do something that's
never been done. We just got to go do it.
Speaker 4 (31:50):
He is the head coach of the eleventh rank to
Arizona State Sun Devils. He is Kenny Dillingham, kind enough
to spend a few minutes with us here on Fox
Sports Radio. Coach good luck against no other in Arizona,
can't wait to watch, and good luck.
Speaker 3 (32:02):
On the entire season.
Speaker 2 (32:03):

this show a couple of years ago, by the way,
not picking on him, but also something that somebody, LeVar Arrington,
dismissed on this show when we brought it up, all right,
So during the preseason, all right, one of the points
that was made was this is why the pre season
(34:00):
still matters, because guys that wouldn't get an opportunity to
play in actual games in a game environment actually get
an opportunity to do so in the preseason. And one
of those guys that was a bit of a star
was Tyson Beigent. And Tyson Beagent, who was undrafted out
of a Division two school called Shepherd in West Virginia,
(34:24):
just got himself a two year extension with the Bears
worth up to sixteen million dollars. But it's looking like
two years ten million dollars can be up to sixteen
with incentives, and Tyson beagent talked yesterday about the deal
for him and his family.
Speaker 2 (34:42):
You know, a lot of.
Speaker 12 (34:42):
People don't know this, but you know, my dad is
my uh, he's my right hand man, and he didn't
he didn't have running water until he was in high school.
Speaker 2 (34:50):
So there's definitely a lot of things.
Speaker 12 (34:52):
That and people that I could that I think I
could certainly help with this gift up and blessed with,
but just little things like that. But you know, I
don't really know anybody back at home with any money.
Speaker 2 (35:03):
So yeah, it feels good.
Speaker 12 (35:06):
I mean, it's certainly a weight off my shoulders and
my family shoulders, and yeah, definitely means a lot.
Speaker 3 (35:12):
How about that?
Speaker 2 (35:14):
Awesome? Yeah, this is one of the cool stories and
one of the reasons why like I love sports is
you get a little bit of a window into the
journey of some of these young men behind the scenes
and their support system. And so for him, it's life
changing money for him and his family for everything that
Dave endured and struggled through and sacrificed, and he's played well.
(35:38):
When he's gotten his opportunities in particularly in the preseason,
but also you know in some of the spot work
that he had in particularly a couple of years ago,
didn't really play much last year, so you know, he's
an insurance policy for them. Although Bears fans should feel
good about where they're at, I think with how killed
Williams looked under Ben Johnson, this new head coach, his
offensive mind, what he's doing, the talent that's on this roster,
(36:02):
the quarterback they have, the backup quarterback that they have, like,
you are putting yourselves in a position to continue to
keep building this thing. My My only concern is that
sometimes when you've got some ownership that has made some
questionable decisions in the past, is don't mess it up, Like,
don't interject into what Ryan Poles and Ben Johnson are building,
(36:24):
because I think they've got a pretty solid foundation. And
maybe we get back to a Bear's team being more
competitive than what we've seen in the past, and we'll
get to see what Caleb Williams is truly capable of being.
If he is that generational talent myself and some other
people kind of called him to be coming into the NFL.
Speaker 4 (36:43):
The story of Tyson Bagent is obviously a good one,
and I was curious how it was going to play
out when Ben Johnson got there, because they signed case Keenum.
They signed him to I think like a one year,
three million dollar deal, and I thought, all right, well,
that's probably gonna be their veteran backup, so on and
so forth. And then you see the way he played
under Ben Johnson's system, and he was really good the
(37:04):
other night, and you've heard stuff from training camp that
he's performed really well. He's obviously he got opportunities when
Justin Fields got banged up, and I believe the stat
was he became the first rookie to win his Bear's
debut in like nineteen years back in twenty twenty three,
and everybody loves him. And then you hear the way
Ben Johnson talks about him, and he loves the guy.
(37:27):
And so to see even in an offseason where you've
got a new coach and then you've got the addition
of a veteran who's proven in the league, and still
you reward him with this type of deal, I think
it shows you that Ben Johnson season goes Hey, man,
if need be, we can win games with this guy
and that's an important position that.
Speaker 2 (37:48):
They didn't have. That's part of it. I think the
other thing is the third quarterback. When you look at
a quarterback room, most people just discount this completely. The
third quarterback really becomes a quarterback coach. Now, J T.
Barrett is there on the Chicago Bears coaching staff as
their their quarterback coach. You know, didn't have a ton
of NFL experience as far as playing. He's gotten into
(38:09):
the coaching ranks. He started with the Troy's done a
good job, I think, you know, learning the system and
obviously getting Ben Johnson to trust him enough to be
able to be that guy who's his vessel in the
quarterback room. But when you have a third string quarterback
like case Keenum or a veteran like that, there is
a world of experience, a world of experience that he's
going to be able to communicate to those younger players.
(38:30):
So that's the importance of having in there too.
Speaker 3 (38:33):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (38:33):
So and plus, I mean, listen, anybody whose dad is
an arm wrestling champion, you know, they deserve a little
bit of love, right. I don't know, I don't know
what the top prize would be that you would win
in an arm wrestling competition.
Speaker 3 (38:46):
Like leak, could you look that up?
Speaker 4 (38:47):
Like, how much would somebody who wins like a national
arm wrestling competition win? It can't be all that much.
And so to see that he's going to get you know,
two years and ten million dollars used to take back
home to West.
Speaker 3 (39:01):
Virginia and help the folks for.
Speaker 5 (39:03):
What was arm Wrestling League w A what was it?
Speaker 2 (39:05):
Over the top? Do we remember? Like the movie? Yeah,
good call, and like is that what they got? Is
that what you want? When Ethan Hoggs foot the switch?
Speaker 3 (39:15):
Yeah, and he had a cat hat? Was it?
Speaker 11 (39:18):
Uh?
Speaker 4 (39:19):
You know the the caterpillar tractor hat? I think he
had that he turned around Lee, What are we looking
at payout wise for arm wrestling champs?
Speaker 8 (39:28):
If you were just to win the regular championship three
hundred plus thousand, but they also have had special events
that have rewarded up to a million.
Speaker 3 (39:34):
Wow. Wow, doesn't need all that now?
Speaker 2 (39:39):
I mean, given your what you do off the off
the radio mic, that could you could get in that?
Jonas got a lot of practice down there. Peeks for
weeks
